Title: Who am I? Summary: Scully's nieces visit. Mulder receives an interesting letter. Author's note: This is a possible two part story. I wrote this will post it. If you like it, please e-mail me. With Summer coming up I will be able to write more. The ending leaves loose ends that I can work with in a possible part two. Let me know what you think. ** Summer vacation for students in the national capital area had started. Dana Scully couldn't wait. Her two nieces would be coming to spend two weeks with her. Dana hadn't meet her newest niece, Sara. Her older brother William and his wife Edith were in the process of adopting the sixteen year-old. Her other niece, Jes was less than thrilled to spend two weeks in the nations capital. Jes had never liked the move from San Diego to Norfolk. Jes was sixteen and a teenager. The move had made life harder than it already was for an adolescent. Jes also treating Sara like she was a bug. Being an only child for 15 years than suddenly having an older sister was not a joyous situation. According to her brother, Sara was not making the transition any easier. She was not adjusting well to having stable parents and one place to call home. William and Edith hoped that a break from the routines of life that the two girls had been living for the past 8 months would help them. William was a Lt. Commander in the navy. Edith, Jes and he had lived the last 5 years in San Diego. Before that they had lived in Hawaii for 4 years. After Hawaii they had lived for four years in Italy, France, Greece, and Switzerland. Jes was born in Alaska although she doesn't remember ever living there. They moved to Hawaii when Jes was two. When living in San Diego they had not lived on base. William was not high enough up in command that they were needed on base. The reason for moving to Norfolk was that it is the head of the Atlantic fleet. Moving to base is different from civilian housing off base. On base is a whole city except for schools. Jes had little interest in having a sister. If only the two of them could know what having a sister could be. Sara was a major problem. She had little respect for authority, a major problem on a Naval base where everyone does what they are told without question, except for maybe the teenagers. They argued and fought but in the end did as they were told. Sara voiced her opinion of how something was wrong to anyone and everyone. Looking like a fool or getting in trouble didn't bother her. Sara was an abandoned child as much as anyone could tell. She had been found in the woods of Virginia when according to doctors she was ten, that was six years ago. The little girl had bounced from foster home to foster home. The homes kept changing until eight months ago when she came to live with William, Edith and Jes. Edith had meet Sara when she was asked to help a friend of hers at work with a case. Edith is psychologist who deals with children and teens. None of the foster parents knew what do with the girl who had, as many described, an overactive imagination and an outright defiance of everyone. William and Edith opened their hearts to the teen. Jes had trouble understanding her parents decision. The two girls spoke to each other but only in passing. Dana hadn't told her partner that her nieces would be staying with her and if a case was not to far away they would come or spend the Summer time with her mom. The girls had an interest in different areas of the FBI. Sara wanted to be a profiler and Jes was in love with the crime labs, especially with material analysis. The teens had spent the last three days with their grandmother in Baltimore. Dana would drive up there tonight to pick up Sara and Jes. She had no idea where they would sleep. She hoped that the sofa bed or floor would be okay. Fox Mulder didn't receive much mail, only the usual bills and magazines. So when he received to letter written in neat, almost perfect handwriting he became curious. The letter addressed to Mr. Fox William Mulder was postmarked from Baltimore. Once inside his apartment he opened the letter. It was written on loose-leaf in the same perfectly neat print. He read: Dear Fox William Mulder, Writing this may cause many problems, but I need answers. I need the answer to the most basic question to any being. Who am I? I do not know. I hope you can help me. I think you are my brother. I can't remember everything, only bits and pieces, some good others bad. The pieces are like a jigsaw puzzle, only I'm missing the box's cover with the picture on it. I believe my name is Samantha Mulder. I am 16 or 32 depending on who you ask. I think I was born on January 12, 1964. The doctors when I woke up thought I was between 8-10 years old. I'm relatively tall. I was in the 95th percentile for my height. They therefore estimated me to be 10 years old. This must seem very strange but I need to know do you have or had a sister? Did she go away one night? I know this is confusing. I've spent six years trying to remember. Now the pieces are there, but they don't fit! I am not sure I want to know, but I need to. I want to know who I am. I am being adopted by a really nice family. They try to believe me but can't believe whole-heartedly. They don't truly believe. People always say I have a very good imagination. I am not making my story up. It really happened. I'll be in the DC area and will contact you again. Bye, The closing of the letter caught him be surprise. Sara Scully. Was the letter from a relative of Scully's? He didn't know that she had any other family besides her mom and two brothers. He'd ask her at work today. Dana found the morning to be full of questions. William had told her Sara was attempting to locate her real family. The 16 year old had no friends, she barely slept, and would not listen to William or Edith. Sara only slept when her body could no longer continue on. She had also declared last night during dinner that her name was not Sara and that she was 32 years old. Edith, knowing that she worked with unusual things, thought she could convince Sara that there were no aliens and that she could not possibly be 32 years old. The same age as Dana. The previous night had been spent trying to figure out this girl. The arguments over petty things like the proper way to fold napkins. It was like talking to Mulder. A sponge and brick wall at the same time. Fox Mulder entered his partner's office. She had a small cubby on the second floor. He jokingly referred to it as her cell. She was sitting as her desk reading the latest file he had given her. When he walked in she looked surprised and cautious. He rarely left the basement. Scully's shocked expression changed to compassion. Something must have happened for him to come up like this. "Scully I need you to read something and tell me what you think." he stated plainly. Scully took the letter he offered and replied cautiously. "Sure, what's this about?" His only answer was for her to "read and see." Just then a young girl with long brown hair and hazel-gray eyes entered. She was a taller than Scully by a good two inches, and had pale skin that burned but only after getting a real nice tan first. "Dana here's ..." That was as far as the girl got before she noticed the man standing in front of her aunt. She just stared at him. He looked so familiar. Where had she seen him before? He looked at her. Sara stared into the man's eyes. Who was he? He looked so familiar but just as much a stranger. Scully anxious to end the silent standoff spoke quickly. "Sara, this is my partner; Mulder, this is my niece Sara. She and her sister Jessica will be spending two weeks with me." As Scully finished the teen blew up. "My name is not Sara. I told you that. Don't start with who I am. William and Edith do it all the time along with everyone else. None of you want to believe. I know what I know and I'm going to get more answers and prove to all of you. My name IS Samantha!" Mulder quickly sat down in the empty chair. "Scully read the letter. Now please!" He spoke in quick, uncertain terms. He was trying to keep all his emotions in check. He'd been through this before. He would not let himself get his hopes up. It just hurt to much. Plus the pieces were to hard to put back together again. He studied the teen. She could be his sister. She looked like him. He wondered what she remembered. Not to mention that she had contacted him as a way of finding out who she was. Could he help her learn what she wanted to know? Dana read the letter and upon reading the closing of the letter it dawned on her that this was a major problem. Sara thought she was Samantha. How could she convince the teen she wasn't taken by aliens. That she was not 32 years old. Did she want to? If she was indeed Samantha than what she had told everyone was the truth, but we would or could not believe. Sara didn't know what this man had given Jes's aunt to read. Calling Dana, Aunt Dana was something she was not ready for yet. Dana was a friend she wanted, really wanted to believe. She just couldn't completely. Dana had turned ghost white when she was reading whatever this man had given her to read. Dana attempted to regain her composure. "Sa-" was all she said. What should I call her, Sara or Samantha? She settled on neither. "Would you step outside, please? I need to talk to my partner." The teen nodded and stepped outside the cubby. She headed down the hall, entered the staircase and went down. The end for now
What's worse, igorance or apathy? Who knows? Who cares?
