Summary: Maggie's first day at school. School's great, it's the people at 'work' that arn't that nice.

Hi It's KafX here and this piece is written for my friend and fellow DWOFM Mandy VDH who celerbrates her 17th in less than a week.

Happy Birthday Mandy,

luv ya KafX

This story follows on from another of my own 'Truth About Mom'. If you haven't read that one you may get a little confused. This deals with Maggie's first day at her new high school.

Note!!!! I am Australian and have no idea of what high schools there are in USA so this is all from my over active imagination.

Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully woke to the sound of her alarm clock beeping at her. She blinked and went through the usual waking up questions. Day? Monday. Time? 6:30 Doof. Date? 5/5/97.

Anything special happening? Uh yeah Maggie's going to school.

"Oh joy," Dana exclaimed aloud, just when you think you've left it for good, your children start and your the one forcing them to get up in the morning. Dana rolled out of her queen sized bed wrapped her dressing-gown around her before heading down the hall to her daughter's room. The door was slightly ajar and Dana quietly opened the door. In the short time that Maggie had been living in the apartment she had put her touch into the room and it was now distinctly 'Maggie's room'. The room was painted white 'a nutural color' with a white carpet, much to Maggie's disgust, but Dana's daughter had pursuaded her into buying a deep forest green rug that now lay in the centre of the room. The rug matched Maggie's doona cover, sheets and curtains which were all in various shades of the same green.

They had gotten a pine dressing table which had Maggie's collection of computer disks, jewellery, hair accessories and photos. A bean-bag was the last of the furniture in the room it was green and blue swirl on it and around it was Maggie's collection of stuffed toys the oldest was 'Ted' the now sixteen-year-old bear Dana had bought for her baby girl.

Curled up asleep, defences down, Margaret Katherine Ann Scully looked totally at peace with the world, Dana wished, hoped that this was true.

"Come on Kitten," Dana said as she walked to the bed, "time to get up." Maggie mumbled incoherantly and rubbed her face in her pillow, "come on don't want to be late for school do you?" Maggie blinked several times before looking straight at her mother twin pairs of ocean blue eyes stared at each other, "Good Morning gorgeous," Dana said bending over and kissing Maggie's forehead.

"Morning Mom," Maggie said, she streached and gave her mother a hug.

"Breakfast will be ready at about 7:30," Dana told Maggie, "that gives you 45 mins to get ready, that includes having your bag packed."

with that Dana left her daughter to get ready. Maggie streached again before getting out of bed and opening the door to her in built wardrobe.

"Now what to wear," Maggie mumbled to herself looking through the wardrobe. Jeans, definately, coloured or plain blue? plain blue.

Maggie got out a pair of jeans along with a green and white jersey that had belonged to Papa Billy, she dumped them on her bed and then searched through her shoes picking out her black leather 'school' shoes as a billet from Australia had called them. She then picked out a plain black leather belt and closed the wardrobe door. After dumping the shoes and belt on the bed Maggie then went to the dressing table and got out a green crop-top and her underwear. Closing the drawers she then started to get changed.

Dana Scully was filling up two cups with coffee when Maggie came into the kitchen dressed and ready for school. "Coffee?" Dana offered handing Maggie a cup.

"Thanks Mom," Maggie said sipping the hot liquid, it was perfect. As Maggie sat down sipping the coffee Dana got two warm bran muffins out of the microwave, put them on seperate plates, passed one to Maggie and then sat down herself. They ate together in a companionable silence saying very little just enjoying each other's company. Before long it was time to leave and face the real world of school.

Maggie starred out at the passing scenery, apartment buildings lined the streets. As the car slowed outside the school Maggie took a deep breath turned and gave her mother a hug.

"See you this afternoon Kitten," Dana said, "You know what to do when you get to the building?" she quized one last time.

"Yes Mom, you've told me numerous times." Maggie said opening the door, "I'll see you then, bye Mom." and with that Maggie was gone.

Dana watched as Maggie walked into the school and then drove off to work and the X-Files.

By the time Maggie had found the office, filled out all the necessary papers and collected her timetable, locker no. and cobination and the like the school day had already started. She found her locker and dumped her bag there grabbing only what was necessary for class.

Finding her locker was one thing but finding her class room was a whole different story. Maggie looked everywhere trying to find her English class room. She was so intent on finding the room she didn't notice the blonde haired girl running towards her. They collided and fell.

"Gees I'm so sorry," Maggie said standing up and then helping the other girl to her feet.

"Don't be," the girl replied, "I missed my bus today, only do that once a term, and I was to out of it trying to get to class, not consentrating on where I was going." she shrugged, "Hi I'm Amanda Van Der Hayden but everyone calls me Mandy."

"I'm Margaret Scully but everyone calls me Maggie." Maggie said.

"You new here?" Mandy asked.

"Yeah, that obvious?" Maggie replied, they had by this time picked up their belongings that had been scattered on the ground when they had collided. Mandy nodded. "Well you wouldn't happen to know where room no. 31 is would you?"

"English with Jonesy right, I'll join you," Mandy offered, "I'm heading there myself." Mandy headed in the direction of the classroom and Maggie followed. When they entered the room they were met with wall of voices, Mandy grinned, "He's not here," she announced to Maggie who followed her into the back of the classroom where two girls sat behind desks pouring over an article from a magazine. They both looked up when they heard Mandy approach.

"Miss the bus did you Mandy?" the blonde haired girl asked.

"Good day to miss it Mandy, Jonesy's sick or something and we've got a double free." commented the brunette.

"Maggie meet Kathryn Dixen, also known as Kaf," Mandy indicated towards the blonde, "and Sarah Vale also known as S.P." indicating the brunette, "guys meet Margaret Scully who's aka is Maggie."

"Hi Maggie," Kathryn said, "nice to meet you,"

"Same here," Sarah said. "Hey Mandy only a week and half to go,"

"Is that all?" Kathryn asked in mock surprise, "what *are* we going to get her?" Mandy made a face at both her friends and sat down at the desk infront of them offering Maggie the seat beside her.

"I don't know Kathryn you got *any* ideas?" Sarah asked smiling innocently back at Mandy.

"Well I found something on my desk yesterday that would be perfect for her." Kathryn commented.

"Oh yeah I seem to remember you mentioning something about it on the phone last night." Sarah said. Maggie looked confused as she listened to the two girls hassel their friend. "It's Mandy's birthday in a week and a half." Sarah explained.

"Yeah and they won't even hint on what they got me," Mandy complained.

"Well why should they?" Maggie questioned. Mandy made another face.

"So Maggie where are you from?" Mandy asked deliberately changing the subject.

"Well I was actually born at Georgetown Hospital but I moved to Rapid City, South Dakota when I was three," Maggie answered.

"So why move back here after so many years?" Sarah asked.

"This where my Mom lives," Kathryn gave the girl a strange look.

"Lives or lived?" Kathryn asked.

"Lives," Maggie replied,

"As in before you moved back here or when you moved back with her?" Kathryn questioned.

"As in before I moved back here," Kathryn starred at Maggie.

"You haven't lived with your mother for about thirteen years?" Kathryn exclaimed. Maggie nodded.

"It's kind of a long story," Maggie explained. The three girls shrugged.

"Please do tell," Mandy said.

"Long or abbrievated version?"

"Long version," Mandy answered.

"We wanna here it all," Sarah said giving a wicked smile.

"Please." Kathryn smiled innocently.

"OK well my Mom had me when she was sixteen," Maggie started her story. As she continued the three girls listened intently asking questions every now and then.

"Wow," Mandy exclaimed when Maggie had finished.

"That'd be so weird," Kathryn commented.

"Your *Mom* is an FBI agent!" Sarah said, "that is so cool."

"Just cause your the SP who's going to do some technical computer course and then train at the Academy and join the FBI," Kathryn told her friend.

"Well your the paranoid freak who thinks the government is behind everything bad that happens in this country," Sarah retorted.

"Not just this country, Sarah," Mandy joined in, "you should know by now that the government is behind everything bad that happens in the whole world."

"I'm sorry that's right it's the whole solar system," Sarah replied.

"Universe," Maggie watched the girls again taking in their details. Mandy had blonde hair that was nearly curly but not quite, she had blue eyes and fair skin and wore plates which made her lisp a bit.

Maggie then noticed that Mandy also wore hearing aids. It gave Maggie a bit of a shock she'd never seen someone her age with hearing aids but it soon passed when she heard Kathryn ask Mandy if she had them turned on and Mandy had laughed along with her. Kathryn was similar in appearence to Mandy, fair skin, blue eyes and blonde hair (though her's wasn't curly) both of them were about 5'4" though Mandy was slightly taller.

Sarah was closer to 5'7," 5'8" with hazel eyes, dark hair cut short and olive skin.

Together these three girls made a really weird group of friends and Maggie liked them instantly.

"So?" Kathryn gave Mandy a look, "did you see it?"

"Like I'd miss it Kathryn," Mandy answered, "and it was so cool, What did you think Sarah?"

"Once I'd gotten my mother out of the room I really enjoyed it,"

"Enjoyed what?" Maggie asked getting more confused as the conversation continued.

"X-treme," Kathryn said.

"Best TV show ever created," Mandy replied.

"We pay homage to all involved in creating it," Sarah explained further. "So Mandy see the latest conspiresy magazine Kathryn got?" As Mandy read Kathryn and Sarah kept Maggie entertained with stories of their school activities. Before long the double was over and the girls had to move on to the next class.

"Thank God for lunch breaks," Kathryn exclaimed, sitting down beside Sarah on the grass.

"Chemistry that bad?" Maggie asked Kathryn and Sarah, who had just finished class.

"Be glad that you were smart enough not to choose it," Mandy said biting into her apple.

"I swear that subject was created just to torcher high school students," Sarah added handing Mandy a letter.

"That boring?" Mandy questioned counting the number of pages, "Geez you two must of been out of your minds," together Sarah and Kathryn had written 6 full pages.

"We only needed to do half of the questions set," Kathryn said.

"So Kathryn does the bare minimum and then starres at Jason's back for the rest of the lesson," Sarah commented, Mandy, Sarah and Maggie watched as Kathryn's normaly fair skin went bright red and then burst out laughing at their friend's embarassment. Maggie enjoyed the good natured joking between her new friends, it helped her relax into her new school life alot more easly.

"So what's everyone doing this arvo after school?" Kathryn asked lying down on the grass.

"Studying," Sarah replied making a face.

"I've got gym today," Mandy reminded her friends. "Kathryn? Maggie?"

"Babysitting the brats next door," Kathryn said, "Now don't tell me that they weren't a government plant cause I won't believe you."

"I've gotta go to the J. Edgar Hoover building," Maggie said as Maggie rolled her eyes at Kathryn's speach. Sarah's eyes lit up at Maggie's reply, "It's gonna be boring as hell, Sarah, I sit around until 6 o'clock either studying or reading while my mother works."

"So?" Sarah said, "it'd be so cool just to be able to see inside the building."

"I don't see much," Maggie replied, "Mom works in the basement."

"What's in the basement?" Kathryn asked.

"'The FBI's most unwanted,'" Maggie quoted her mom's partner.

This comment got starres from all three girls. "My mom's partner isn't exactly loved in the bureau," she explained.

The girls shrugged and nodded. "So what do you do on weekends around here?" Maggie asked changing the subject. Together Mandy, Sarah and Kathryn told Maggie about the places to go to around the Washington DC area. It didn't take long for the rest of lunch to dissappear and lessons to start again.

Dana Scully looked at her watch for what must of been the hundreth time in an hour.

"Don't worry Scully," Mulder told his partner, "She'll be here on time." Scully sighed, her partner was right but it was a mother's job to worry and so she did. "If you've finished your part of the report why don't you hand it in to Skinner?"

"Have you finished your part?" Scully asked as Mulder handed her a typed report all finished and ready to hand in. Scully left the basement office and Mulder leaned back in his chair sipping his cup of coffee. Maggie Scully had been a surprise to him, like many others, Mulder had assumed that Dana Katherine Scully had always been a good little girl, doing what she was told, obviously not. There was a knock on the door.

"Come in," Mulder called. The door opened to reveal the sheepish face of Maggie Scully. "Hi Kiddo, how was school?" Maggie walked into the office.

"Fine thanks 'Dad'" Maggie replied with a giggle. Mulder smiled he liked the sound of that word coming from Maggie even spoken in jest.

"How was work?"

"Despite the fact that your mother was totally out of it half the day it was OK." Maggie made a face and started digging around Mulder's desk until she found his stash of chocolate bars, picking out a Three Muskateers bar she then replaced it so her mom wouldn't find it.

"So did you make any friends?"

"Yeah," Maggie laughed, "Mandy crashed into me and knocked me over, Sarah wants to join the FBI and Kathryn is a bigger conspiracy freak than you." at that time Scully came through the door.

"Someone's a bigger conspiracy freak than Mulder?" she questioned.

"Hi Mom," Maggie said giving her mother a hug, "Yeah you should meet these girls sometime Mom, they are so weird. It's Mandy's birthday in a week and a half and Sarah and Kathryn were teasing her every chance they got. They are so funny to watch and they're really nice. They always made sure I knew how to get to class and they included me in all their conversations."

"So did you do any work?" Scully asked her daughter. Maggie gave her mother a look.

"Yes I do have *some* homework to do," Maggie answered.

"How about I take you down to the cafateria to work," Mulder suggested, "then I'll come back and finish the expence reports." Scully nodded now that she knew that Maggie was alright and where she was Scully wasn't as worried as she had been only 15 minutes ago.

"Hi Maggie how you going?" a voice interupted Maggie's train of thought. Turning around she saw Agent Sarah Peters and two other women.

"Hi Agent Peters, I'm fine thanks," Maggie replied. "and you?"

"Fine. Let me introduce you to Agent Kathryn Rogers and Agent Amanda Davidson." the other two agents shook hands with Maggie, "Kathryn, Amanda meet Maggie Scully, Dana's daughter," Maggie heard the underlying message behind Agent Peter's words and it hurt especially considering how nice Agent Peters had been when she'd first arrived and thought that she was Scully's niece.

"Pleased to meet you," Maggie said, "if you'll excuse me I have homework to do." She returned to her text book and waited for the three women to leave before allowing her tears to appear. She didn't cry for herself but for her mother, the once highly respected Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully MD had lost that respect because of her, Margaret Katherine Ann Scully and that hurt because Maggie knew how difficult it had been for her mother to look after her and do everything that she had done for her. Maggie was glad that the people at her school weren't as childish as the people at her mother's work.

She looked forward to seeing her new friends the next day. With a smile Maggie finished her homework and ignoring the starres she got from the agents went back to find her mother and go home.
