Comments are always appreciated flames will be used to roast marshmallows.

Disclaimer: And now for the always sought out and desired disclaimer. Let's give it a round of applause. I don't own Mulder and Scully I sure wish I did because then I wouldn't be living in this one room shack with no plumbing or electricity. I would be married to David Duchovny. *s*
Anyway Chris Carter and 1013 productions do. I ain't getting any money for this. Remember I live in a shack. Please don't sue me. And now for the feature presentation.

The sand was warm beneath her feet. The waves were caressing the sand in a hypnotic pattern. She looked out across the ocean. Seeing the horizon seeing the slight curve. She had a man by her side and a little girl who she recognized as Emily. Her daughter. She recognized the man as her partner Fox Mulder. Their relationship was difficult to categorize. They were close, best friends in fact, but she couldn't help thinking that there was something more there. They had worked together for so long and the intensity of their work had brought them closer. He had seen her through so much her abduction and her cancer.

Mulder was a difficult person to read, she felt drawn to him sometimes but other times she felt miles away. Suddenly the waves wrapped around Emily's leg and pulled her into the ocean. For one fraction of a second Dana Scully had no idea what to do. Then instinct kicked in and she ran into the water after her. Mulder was right on her heels swimming running all at the same time calling Emily's name. He past her partly because his legs were longer and partly because she was very fearful for Emily's life. She saw Mulder reach for Emily's hand, he missed.

Dana woke up in a cold sweat. She had been dreaming. The thought of Emily brought tears to her eyes. She had lost the child she had never had. Dana knew she would never conceive a child. The men that had abducted her had taken her ova. Emily was her daughter but she had never been pregnant. She remembered the pain she had felt when she opened that envelope and found out that she was Emily's mother. Her family had been around her, her mother Margaret, her brother Bill Jr. and his pregnant wife Tara. It had been easy to tell them compared to telling Mulder; he had been shocked by the news and had taken the next flight out. He was there to support her when Emily was in the hospital, but Emily had died. She had excepted that truth but the nightmares still haunted her. This dream had plagued her for three nights now.

Fox Mulder sat in his office waiting for his partner of six years to walk through the door at any moment. It wasn't like her to be late.

Thousands of thoughts rushed through his head. Was Scully hurt or injured? Have those sons of bitches taken her again? Just as he was about to reach a state of panic Scully walked through the office door.

He tried to hide his fear from her but he could tell she knew he had been upset. He noticed that she looked very disheveled and tired. Instantly the fear changed to Scully's health. He did not want to go through the emotions he felt when Scully had been diagnosed with cancer. It had after all gone it to remission.

"Scully, what's wrong you look tired?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just didn't sleep well last night."

"What you got a boyfriend I don't know about?" He quipped.

She gave him one of those I'm not in the mood looks and he had enough sense to leave her alone.

He said very comfortingly and easy," What happened?"

She regarded him with her eyes and then said, " It's about Emily."

He saws that her eyes were glassy with unshed tears. He had felt a pain inside him when Emily died maybe it was pain for Scully, losing a child was difficult but he didn't know. He remembered like it had been yesterday. The shock he had felt when he saw that Scully's cross necklace, the one he had worn when she had been taken, around little Emily's neck. He had worn that necklace as faith that she would be returned to him. He of course had given the necklace back to her when she woke up from the coma. Now he saw that this gesture meant so much.

Emily was Scully's daughter he couldn't deny that. But Emily was conceived for scientific purposes. This child was not meant to be loved, but Scully had loved that child. In her short life she at least had known the love of her true mother. He got up from the desk and walked behind her. He put a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"I got a case in this morning. We leave for Phoenix at four. Do you feel like you can handle a case?"

"Yes. I need to get away from D.C. for awhile."

"Okay, you go home and pack I'll pick you up at your apartment in a couple of hours."

Dana walked through the door of her apartment. Locking the door behind her. Mulder had been so sensitive to her this morning. She packed her bag for Phoenix slowly. There was no need to hurry. Mulder said he would pick her up at two and they would go for a quick lunch and talk about the case. She didn't even know what the case was and she really didn't care. She just needed to get away from D.C.

At two o'clock Mulder knocked on Scully's door. By two thirty they were sitting down to a nice lunch. They ordered drinks and food, both had iced tea, and both had burgers. Mulder had a cheeseburger; Scully had a turkey burger.

"So why are we going to Phoenix?" she asked.

"A young boy claims his brother was eaten by a monster under the bed."

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, I am serious." he mocked.

He was rewarded with one of those seldom Scully smiles. 'God, she has a beautiful smile' he thought.

He had come to realize that he loved Scully. More than a best friend did and not as a sister but as a companion. He hid his feelings knowing that Scully would never go against Bureau policy. So he hid his feelings because he didn't want to become to close than lose her. Her fight with cancer had been a tough one. He remembered when the cigarette smoking man had offered him a deal. If he went to work for "Cancerman" she would live. He remembered going into her room and thinking about the deal. He had cried at her bedside and when he left he knew that he would refuse the deal. But "Cancerman" had been generous he had given Mulder the cure anyway. He wasn't sure why but he had and for that he was grateful.

When they had touched down in Phoenix, Scully was still exhausted, even though she had slept most of the way there. She had fallen asleep on Mulder's shoulder. She had dreamt of that same awful dream but this time Mulder was able to save Emily. She awoke to Mulder shaking her gently. He said she looked more rested but that's not the way she felt. It was late, she just wanted to check into the hotel room and go to bed.

Mulder was guiding her through the airport with a reassuring hand on the small of her back. She realized how common this motion was and felt happy for the constancy. After Emily had died something had changed in their relationship. They had become closer and that scared her. She was afraid that the emotions she was feeling for her partner were not shared. That one day she would confess her feelings and he would reject her. So she kept their relationship professional. She thought briefly of the symbolism of Mulder being in her dream. She didn't know why he was there. He of course and gone after Emily in the water, but so had she. He had passed her because she was overcome with emotion. The thought of the icy cold water and it sent a shiver down her spine. He looked down at her questioningly. It was far from cold in the airport, in fact it was sweltering.

Mulder lay awake in the hotel bed thinking about Scully. She seemed so distracted today, in the office at lunch, and at the airport. It was so unlike her to be thinking about anything other than the task on hand.

He briefed her on the case. Six-year-old Donny claimed his twelve-year-old brother Michael was taken by a monster that came from under the bed. The only reason the FBI had jurisdiction over the case was because the boy's father was a field agent. Because of the strange nature of the claims "Spooky" Mulder had been given the case. Mulder was on the fast track in the FBI until he was side tracked by the X-Files. Through hypnotic regression he had come to believe that aliens abducted his sister when she was eight and he was twelve. He knew now with great confidence that the government that he worked for had taken his sister. He had met her in a diner where she told him his worst enemy "Cancerman" had raised her. She told him that she had a life now with kids. He couldn't believe that his little sister had grown up. He asked her to go and see their mother. She had refused. She said it would be too painful for her and he hadn't heard from her since that night. He had been lost for awhile not sure how to continue. The things he had based his life on were being disproved. He felt almost lost not knowing what to believe. One thing for sure was that he could trust his partner.

The day had started out awful Dana had slept in and now she was hurrying to meet Mulder down stairs for breakfast. She dressed quickly and headed down stairs. She met Mulder for breakfast and they than headed for the home of Donny and Michael Conner. They questioned Donny and he told them word for word what was in the police report. They then talked to Mr. and Mrs. Conner. They had been at the neighbor's house for a birthday party and had left Michael in charge. When they returned they had found Donny curled up in a corner with every single light in the house turned on. He had told them the story of the monster under the bed. Scully tried to put the dreams behind her. She could see already that this case was going nowhere.

Mulder was surprised to see that Scully had slept in. She was normally always on time. After questioning the Conners he and Scully knew that the case was going nowhere. They reviewed the case over lunch and headed back to the Conner's house to see where the incident had happened. That's when Michael Conner returned home. Apparently he thought that it would be funny to play a practical joke on his brother.

He had been staying with a friend. Mulder knew that his mom and dad would punish him enough so he refrained from giving the boy a lecture.

Scully had been furious at the young boy. She couldn't believe what he had put his parents through they were worried sick. Mulder of course knew that the boy would be punished enough. So he led them both to the car. Scully called the airport on her cell phone to book the next available flight to D.C. since the case was solved. She still felt unsettled about the dream. She would slip into, almost a daydream remembering the dream of Emily. Mulder could see she was having trouble concentrating and had saved her from looking like a complete fool for not paying attention more than once.

She was upset to here that all flights to D.C. had been canceled do to a large storm cell. Instead she booked two seats on a flight in the morning. She thought she could handle one more night in Phoenix. When they arrived at the hotel they agreed to split and rest for awhile then meet for dinner.

Mulder was still disturbed about the way Scully was acting. He didn't like her zoning off and him having to save her ass, so she didn't look like a complete fool. He wanted to get to the bottom of this. He pulled on a shirt over the jeans he'd slipped into so he was more comfortable. He walked a few steps to Scully's door and knocked lightly and followed that up with a 'It's me Scully'.

She answered the door; she to had slipped into something more comfortable. She was wearing tight fitting black jeans and a blue sweater that brought out the blue in her eyes. He was suddenly struck with how beautiful she looked. He had only seen her in none work clothes a few times before, even though they had worked together for a long time. He realized this was a rare Scully standing in front of him, she was out of her element. He got down to business.

"Scully, we gotta talk."

"Sure Mulder, come in."

"What is it that's bothering you. You were here today but it was like you were a million miles away."

She looked away from where he had been holding her gaze. She sighed deeply and began.

"Mulder I've been having this recurring dream about Emily, actually it's more like a nightmare. You and I are walking down the beach with Emily. I'm thinking how happy I am and then all of a sudden the water sweeps Emily away. We try to go after her but the water swallows her up. It scares me, I wake up every night in a cold sweat from this dream. Yesterday it occurred to me that it was strange that you were with me. I mean we're partners and friends and the relationship ends there, but I think that the dream might mean something subconsciously."

"I see." Was the only thing he could manage.

Dana felt the burden of Emily's death rise off her chest she admitted to him that she wasn't handling the death of Emily well and that she couldn't turn to her mother for support. She felt she had to handle it on her own. She felt the tears for Emily slip down her face. Mulder walked across the room and took Dana in his arms. He held her there until she had cried herself to sleep. He laid her down on the bed and covered her with a blanket.

He sat on a chair across from the bed and watched her sleep. The even rise and fall of her chest and he cried then too. He cried for the loss of his sister. He cried for the death of his father. He cried for his truths, which had been savagely ripped apart at the hands of the consortium. And he cried for Scully, all the pain he had caused her. 'she would never have been abducted by those men, Emily would never have been born. Then it occurred to him that maybe Scully had truths of her own to uncover. What those men did to he when she was abducted? What was going to happen to her cancer? All these questions she still had to answer for herself. He realized then that they were both searching for the truth. They just were looking for different truths. He slowly drifted into sleep and dreamt of Scully, the past, the present, and the inevitable future.

The End.
