Summary: It was his second birthday.

For my babies.

It was his second birthday.

She could picture him at two. His little bald head would have finally filled in - she imagined he would have her soft red curls. His little round face and body would still carry a hint of baby. He'd be walking, and talking.

Sometimes, as she shopped in the supermarket, she imagined the little toddlers running around were hers. They fell down and giggled, hid behind their mothers when a stranger approached, and cried when it was time to go home.

She ached for her baby.

She would wake up at night, hearing his cries. But it was always just a dream. She would snuggle closer to her husband and try to fall back asleep, picturing her son's face as she closed her eyes.

It was his second birthday.

She went to the bakery around the corner. She had seen them filling in a display case with colorfully frosted cupcakes, and decided that they would be perfect. She bought two, blue-frosted and covered in rainbow sprinkles.

After dinner that night, she set them on the table with a candle stuck in each.

"What's this?" Her husband asked.

She wiped away a tear. "It's William's second birthday."

End.
