Rated PG, just to be safe. This part is G, I believe, but who know's what I might want to throw in later.
10K
Category S (Pretty much) Maybe later a little itty bitty tiny bit o' MSR, but probably not, just doesn't fit in this story... too bad.

Disclaimer: Not mine, no duh (I can't think of a catchy and witty way to do this one, sorry) Although Maddi (Fox Madison Mulder) is probably mine. Heck, she's ME, so yeah, she's mine. Don't borrow her w/o permission,KO?

Summary: (I like to read this first) Is Mulder finding his sister? No, I'm not talking about Samantha...

In searching for my sister, I found a friend. A friend, a companion, a mission, a truth. And in finding a friend, I found, my sister. -Fox Mulder ***

"Mulder? Finally, you're here. Big news."

Fox Mulder entered his office and was greeted by his rather flustered partner.

"Scully, what's the matter?"

"This" She handed him a police report. He read it over slowly, trying to find anything unusual, but there was nothing. Illegal drugs and some federal files found in a crowded apartment. The residents were in federal custody.

"So Scully, what's up? This is hardly anything... paranormal."

"Did you check out the list of residents? Anything seem unusual there?

Mulder, you're name is on that paper!"

"What!?" At first he didn't believe her, but when he scanned down the list, there it was. Fox Mulder.

"When I first read it, I thought you'd really gotten yourself in a knot. Then I noticed something else. Look where this phantom 'Fox Mulder' is being held."

"Juvenile department?"

"Right. That was my first hint that it wasn't you they were talking about. I called up and we can go talk to this kid anytime we want. I've just been waiting for you to get in." They both grabbed their coats and headed for the door. Scully stopped him.

"By the way, you're late."

Federal Holding Area

Juvenile Department

The guard lead them to the cell. "There must be a mistake," Mulder told the guard upon seeing it's occupant, "We're looking for Fox Mulder."

The guard checked the cell number again. "This is it."

Mulder stared in amazement at the young prisoner before him. It was a girl!

He guessed she was around 14. Reluctantly, he stepped inside the cell, Scully following.

"Ummm..." He tried to clear his shock along with his throat, "You Fox Mulder?"

The girl looked up from the magazine she'd been previously reading. "Sort of." She answered.

"What do you mean, 'sort of'?"

"Well," she said, stepping up to him, looking up to meet the large height difference, "My full name is Fox Madison Mulder, but of course, I don't go by Fox. It's a guys name. What's it to ya'?"

Mulder tried to hold back a smile. She was acting like such the stereotypical tough-girl, it was obvious she watched way to many movies and thought she could pull it off too. He had to admit, she was quite the little actress, but he could see the slight fear in her eyes. But this was the least of his concerns. He had to find out who this girl was. But he seriously didn't know where to start. "Ummm..."

Scully cut him off. "So, Madison-"

"Maddi" The girl corrected.

Scully smiled, keeping her cool, "Sorry, *Maddi*. That's quite an unusual name, Fox. Where did it come from?" Mulder smiled inwardly. Scully obviously knew what she was doing. Straight to what he wanted to know so badly. She knew him well.

"I've been told," Maddi started, sitting back down, tired of the tough-girl act, "that I was named after someone close. My father said that it would bring me to someone very important someday. Frankly, I think he was off his rocker, cuz' the most important person I've met so far is that judge guy that's makin'

me stay here, and I really don't think my name had anything to do with that.

He, my father, gave me this, "she revealed a gold chain bracelet with a small plate. In scripted in it was: Fox Madison Mulder, My sun. "Supposedly, it's 'The Key', whatever that's supposed to mean."

Mulder's mind began to spin. The key. My sun. My son.

"Anyway, I think my dad is crazy, or *was* crazy, who knows. He's probably dead. From what I remember, he was pretty old when I was little."

Scully stepped in, since Mulder seemed to be in a trance of thought. "What do you mean, 'from what you remember'?"

"I haven't seen him since I was, I don't know, maybe five. That was about 10 years ago. All I know about him is what I remember, and what they tell me."

"They?"

"The guys. You know, the ones I came in here with. Seriously, I had no idea they had all them files everybody says they've got. The drugs, sure, I saw a few things, but hey, who's gunna' squeal when all these men are taking care of you for all these years when they could just throw you out on the street anytime they like? Sure, they're a tough crowd, but they're family, sort of."

Mulder just sat and stared at her. It was incredible. Her hair was dark, like his father's, but with a hint of red. The skin was tan, also like his father's, and she had that cursed Mulder nose, though somehow she pulled it off nicely. The thing that stood out were her eyes. They were a familiar shape, like the eyes he admired and feared as a child, the eyes that gave more punishment than any amount of grounding, and more joy from simple approval than any award or medal. But they were blue. A deep, bright blue, like an ocean storm on a summer day. Her eyes clashed with the rest of her face, yet they held him captive, and silent. Finally, he broke free.

"Your father," he said suddenly, startling Scully, "His name. Do you remember his name?"

Maddi stared at him for a second, seeing something in him he'd been seeing in her for the past lifetime of minutes. "Yes," she said slowly, "His name is Bill Mulder."

Fox Mulder was in shock. Complete, utter, and unfortunately prolonged shock.

She was his sister. Fox Madison Mulder was his sister. All the test pointed at one thing. Bill Mulder was her father. The same Bill Mulder who helped raise a young boy named Fox *William* Mulder.

The mother could not be found. They were able to get a hold of Maddi's birth records, but the mother's name was convenient erased, supposedly during a hospital break-in a few years back.

"Maddi's back in Federal custody, for now. The trial went great, not guilty, of course. Although the men she lived with didn't get off as easy. Of course, they broke the law and she didn't..." Scully greeted her partner as she entered the office bearing the good news.

"So, she's home free?"

"Well, that's the thing. She doesn't have a home to be free to. The men she was living with are all in jail. We don't know who her mother is, and your father is de- um, he's passed on. It seems you're the only one left, and judge was thinking-"

"What?! They want *me* to take care of her!?"

"Well, Mulder, you're all she's got."

"But Scully! Let me make sure we're clear on this. Me. Fox William Mulder.

Scully, me! I can't even take care of myself, much less a child! What are you thinking?!" The look on Scully's face told him quite clearly that she was not pleased with his reaction to the news.

"Mulder, for 24 years you've been searching for your sister-"

"She's not Samantha!"

"- and now you find this girl who needs you, and just happens to be your sister, and you want to just turn away like she's some kid on the streets-"

"I didn't say that."

"- She may not be who you were looking for all those years, but she's something. For four years I've watched you leave here to go to an empty apartment full of hate, fear, and bad memories. This is your chance at a better life. Mulder, you know I would die to have a child, and I wish more than anything that I could give that girl a home, but she's not for me. She's *your* chance. She needs you Mulder, but more importantly, you need her."

"Scully, I-"

But there was nothing he could say. She was right. But something inside him felt wrong. Sure, he wanted this, he couldn't ignore that part of him. But he also couldn't ignore the other part of him, the part that brought memories with it. Memories of the pain and sorrow that came every time he let someone get close. And so, as Scully spent the day filling out paperwork and filing cases, he sat, and thought, weighing the odds of the life ahead, and the life he'd already lead.

A child's laughter. His father's death. A sister's loyalty. Scully's abduction. Maddi's eyes. He couldn't get past that one. The person he saw inside them was a person he couldn't help but love. He could tell so much about her by just looking into them. He'd known her not more than a few days, and yet he couldn't get past those eyes. They sparkled with the promise of their depths.

Her eyes made his decision.

End

Sorry so short and so late. Let me explain myself. I was writing it a day or so ago. I had a *whole* lot done, but I needed to look up a word on my computer's dictionary. Anyway, I had too many windows open, and it messed up my computer. I had to restart it, and stupid me, I hadn't saved the story first. It was late, so I didn't have time to rewrite it then. That's why it's late. It's short cuz when I did rewrite it, it kept reminding me that I was rewriting something I already took the time to write. That pissed me off, and, well, it's tough to write when your pissed at what you're writing. I'll try better next time. Sorry. A
