"How are you going to protect William?" Monica asked. She was sitting in the living room at Scully's apartment. Concern for her friend spread across her features.

"I thought of taking the easy way out, Monica. I thought about giving him up, but that's what they want me to do," Scully said. She was a bit more calmer than she had been a few minutes earlier, even though she was still worried about her son's future, that she wouldn't be able to protect him. She drew a rueful sigh and looked up at Monica.

"I remember what you been through with Mulder to have him, Dana. You shouldn't have to let them decide what's best for your future. It isn't right."

"I know, Monica. That's what Mulder and I feared the most - that they would use his leaving to come to get us, to break us down." She paused. "I once told Mulder that if I quit now, they win. If I give up our child, they would win. They would have beaten us. I'm going to raise our child with Mulder."

"Are you going to leave?"

"I'm going to ask Mulder to come home. Mulder isn't the one in danger, it's William. We have to protect him. We have seen things on the X-Files that make the Super Soldiers look like a nuisance. We know how to stop them now," Scully said. She paused briefly and then, with fierce determination in her clear blue eyes. "We're going to fight the fight."

Scully was in her bedroom, getting ready for bed after she put William to bed. She looked deep within herself and remembered what she would have done a couple of years ago when Mulder was still with her, back before he was even abducted.

She remembered the clarity during the time when she stood before the buddha. Her mind was now clearer than it had been after Mulder came back to her. Now everything made sense to her.

She knew what she had to do regarding her future with Mulder and William. "I have made a decision... I'm not giving up my son. I remember what I said to Mulder back then when his brain was turned on to telepathy. I told him to fight the fight. Now I must do the same. I can't give up our child."

Scully groaned at the woman she had become: a woman who had forgotten to trust no one. She had let anonymous women into her home. She trusted strangers without skepticism. Without Mulder, she had forgotten the woman who wouldn't have done these things. She had no one to blame but herself. She was new at motherhood, but she could do better. "When I look back, most of what happened could have been prevented. I should never have let Mulder leave." She paused, reflecting on why she had acted so unlike herself. "I was stupid. Most of all, I thought the threat was real."

She remembered how she was back when she was on the X-Files with Mulder. She finally found herself, the woman that she was and still could be. The woman who never believed in quitting when it turned hard. Why should she fall apart without Mulder standing by her side?

It didn't make any sense.

Now she was going to get her life back. She wanted Mulder back with her and William.

She used one of her disposable cell phones to contact Mulder. "Mulder, it's me."

"Scully, is there anything wrong?"

"I figured it out, Mulder. Everything. Mulder, I don't think you're the one who's in danger - it's William. They wanted us to be separated, but we will only be strong if we're together..."

"I've been thinking about that, too. I've seen no evidence that they were out to kill me, Scully. I'm coming home."

Mulder came home on a Friday. No one, except for Scully, knew he was coming home. He went straight to their apartment. "Scully, I'm home!"

Scully went straight for Mulder. She put her arms around his waist. "I'm so glad you're home." She paused. "How was your flight?"

"I'm glad," Scully said.

"Scully, I just want to wrap my arms around you and to see William," he said with a grin. He did what he said he would do. Mulder wrapped his arms around her and he was led by Scully to see their son. "Hey, William, I'm back." He looked at his son's reddish brown hair and hazel eyes. "He has changed since I went away."

"I know," Scully said. "Last time you were here, he hardly had any hair and his eyes were blue. I'm so happy you're home, Mulder. I missed you so much."

"I'm home now, Scully. We are together. You know, Scully. I think we should be official."

"Official? Like husband and wife?"

Mulder nodded. "Yes."

"I was thinking the same thing while you were away, Mulder. Actually, I have been thinking of us being married since I was pregnant with William."

"Will you marry me, Dana Scully?"

"You know that I will," Scully said. Her lips reached for his to form the most passionate kiss that they had felt for months. "We lost too much time, Mulder. We need to...well, you know."

"I know," Mulder said. He gently kissed her forehead and then her lips. "I want us to be together. We're stronger together than being apart. Know what I mean?"

Scully nodded. "Sending you away was the worst decision of my life. I will never do that again."

"I won't ever leave you. I promise."

They kissed.

And then they went to their bedroom.

As they held each other in their arms, Scully knew this felt *right* - that they could do anything they set their minds on. She felt the warmth from Mulder and she knew their life together would give so many blessings. Perhaps a new life was already forming from the love they shared together. "Mulder?"

"Hmmm, Scully."

"What are you thinking of?"

"The woman and the son I love."

"I'm thinking of how everything in our lives will be right from now on."

And indeed it was.

Author's Notes:

This story was written in response of the Season 9's William. A question formed in my mind: What happens if Scully made a different decision regarding William's future.

I hope you enjoyed this story as I had writing it.
