Feedback: Much appreciated and welcomed.
Summary: Katherine Scully, Scully's daughter, joins the FBI to search for her father, Fox Mulder, and is assigned to the X-Files.

Author's Note: This story is set in alternate Discovery Series Universe where Scully had died when giving birth to Katherine while married to Mulder. There might be a sequel with Mulder's perspective of what happened. I felt that I needed a change of pace after finishing two Discovery Series installments.

Thanks: To my beta readers who had helped me with this story.

I had never known my mother nor my father. For as long as I remember, I had lived with my grandmother, Margaret Scully, who had shown me pictures of my mother, Dana Scully, who had died giving birth to me.

Not before she named me after her. Katherine Dana Scully.

My father, Fox Mulder, had left after my mother had died as he couldn't handle her death.

He probably couldn't look at me because I look too much like my mother. I don't even know where he lives. All I know that he's still in the FBI.

I don't blame my parents. All I want is to know my father. I feel though as a part of me is missing. I know the Scully part of me, but what about my father's side? What is the Mulder part of me?

I need to know. After all, the truth is within me. I need to find out the truth...

My grandmother said that I sound like them all ready...

I've been a Special Agent with Federal Bureau of Investigation for a couple of years now. I had been assigned to Quantico teaching forensic medicine for new agents--just like my mother had done.

However, I am getting a new assignment. I'm not very happy about this because I like being at Quantico. I feel close to my mother.

Don't they understand that? Of course not.

AD Skinner had ask me to come into his office to talk about my new assignment. He told me that I look so much like my mother. That's fine. Then, he told me that I'm assigned to the X-Files.

"The what?" I said.

"The X-Files," Skinner said, as he shifted some papers in front of me.

"Will I have a partner?" I asked. [This had better be good.]

"Yes, you'll have a partner," Skinner replied. "You will find your partner at the basement office."

[In the *basement* office? This isn't a very good career move.]

"Agent Scully? Did you hear what I said?"

"Yes, I heard what you said. Sir, why the X-Files?"

"I felt that they needed someone with your scientific knowledge."

"I understand."

Sure, I had scientific knowledge. After all, I'm a forensic pathologist--just like my mother.

I left Skinner's office, and headed towards the X-Files Basement Office. I knocked on the door, and I heard a male voice which answered. "Nobody's down here except the FBI's most unwanted!"

I walked in the door, without noticing my partner. "Hello, I'm Special Agent Katherine Dana Scully, and I'm your new partner."

"What did you say that your name was?"

"Katherine Scully," I answered.

"That can't *be* right. I had a daughter whom I thought died with my wife. We named her Katherine Dana Mulder..." The man trailed off, as he looked at me. "My wife died in childbirth. The baby was born one month before she was due... I thought they were both dead."

"I'm sorry to hear that," I remarked. I still hadn't made any connections to this man and myself. Sure, I shared the same hazel eyes as him but I looked like my mother.

"After Scully died, I couldn't be with any partners. I didn't want them to be close to me."

"Scully? That's my last name," I answered. "My mother's name was Dana Scully." He looked at me as he was putting two and two together. "What is it?"

"It was Dana Scully-Mulder," replied the man. He put on his glasses, and he looked at my features. My shoulder-length auburn hair, my hazel eyes, and my similar features that I had inherited from my mother.

"How do you know so much about my mother?" I asked.

He pulled out a photo to show me, and it was of my mother and himself when they were FBI agents. "That was taken when we first became partners." He paused. "It took several years before I asked her to marry me..."

"You married her?"

"Yes, I married her. Then, we found out that we're going to be parents. You don't know how happy I was that she was having my baby..." He paused, as he looked at me. "You're my daughter... I thought that you died..."

I arched my eyebrows in wonderment. I am his daughter? This man is my father? "Really?"

"Yes, I'm your father, Fox Mulder."

"Grandma told me that you left when I was born... You couldn't handle Mommy's death," I replied, emotionally. It *wasn't* every day that you walked into the basement office finding that your new partner was actually your father.

"She *said* that to you?" My father asked me, while I nodded. "She told me that you died along with your Mom."

"There has got to be some explanation for this," I remarked. I saw my father smile at me, and I wondered why. "What?"

"Your mother said the same thing to me. In fact, you look so much like her."

"Not only that, I'm also a forensic pathologist and I taught forensic medicine for two years at Quantico," I replied. I noticed that Dad looked downcast. "Is there something wrong?"

"Not really. You were at Quantico, and I didn't even notice. I didn't even think to check..."

"You told me that you thought that I was dead. It's understandable. Daddy, why would Grandma lied to us?"

My father drew a deep breath, and he looked at me with understanding. "Your Grandma lost her last daughter, which was my wife and your mother, and she didn't want to lose you to me. She lost your Aunt Melissa as well, and then, when your mother died giving you life, it's understandable what she must have thought."

"She had Uncle Bill and Uncle Charlie... You didn't have me or Mommy."

"I know, but let's try to see it from her perspective. She was grieving. She wanted to keep you safe from anything that I might put you through..."

"I know, Daddy," I answered. "How come you're not angry with Grandma?"

"We both lost someone we loved very much," he said. He looked at me with a smile. "But we have a part of her that will live on. Katherine, I remember telling your mother that the truth is in her. It's now in you. The truth is in you." He paused. "Your mother would be proud of you."

I know that my Dad is right. I have the same desire for the truth that fueled my parents.

I'm not missing anything.

Like my father said, the truth is in me.

End of Vignette
