Title: Sir William, Lady Mommy and King Daddy Note: This is the sequel to Mystery at St Mary Magdalene, though you don't need to have read it to understand this fic. Hope you enjoy it! Send feedback!!!
"Mulder, There's something else I need to tell you." "You brought back the uniform with you." "No, Mulder. I didn't. I want you to come with me to the doctor's tomorrow." "Sure, Scully. You don't have to ask. Anyway, I thought it was just the flu. If not that, then what?" She made a pause and then grinned. "I think I might be pregnant."
Doctor Mcnichols' Office "Well, Dana. I guess congratulations are in order." The doctor smiled from her post by the door. She was carrying a white envelope that contained Dana Scully's exaMs. A moment of utter silence followed the doctor's statement. The only thing that could be heard in the room was the couple's breathing. "Scully...You...I...We are...." Mulder stammered. Meanwhile, Scully's look was lost somewhere beyond the office's window. She remained motionless, so much so that he feared she was going into shock. "Mul..." Tears were already running down her cheeks. "Mrs Scully, are you all..." She passed out before the doctor could finish the question. "Scully!" Mulder held her tight. "Why don't you lie her down on the stretcher?" He followed her suggestion and with the utmost care deposited her on it. After a couple of seconds she came round looking somewhat dazed. Mulder had each of his hands on either side of her head. "Hey, mommy? Are you ok?" The word mommy made her come out of her shock and start whimpering. "Mmmmmmm...." "Here. Have some water." Doctor Mcnnichols handed her a glass. She greedily drank the whole of it, all the time watching her husband's emotions. In his eyes she could see fear interspersed with amazement and joy. "Are you feeling better?" he asked her, not taking his eyes off her. She simply nodded. There were so many things she wanted to tell him, so many doubts she wanted to share with him but the news had left her totally speechless. Mulder, who was always attentive to her needs, saw this and asked the doctor to leave them alone. "Scully, look at me." She did. "I want you to take a deep breath, ok? Now, breathe with me. That's it." "Mul...Mulder...We're gonna have a baby," she whispered. "Yes, sweetheart. We are. And it's going to be beautiful, just like his mom." He kissed her softly on her lips. "But how?!" She kept on whimpering. He couldn't give her an answer. If he did, he was surely going to come up with something related to Spender. "What if...what if Spender did something to me, Mulder, while he drugged me....what if the baby is not normal...what if..." She was working herself up. "Scully, Dana, calm down. Shhhh..." He wanted to tell her that everything was going to be fine but he had sworn himself not to hide anything else from her, not even with the intention of protecting her. "We're gonna ask the doctor to perform all the necessary tests to make sure the baby is fine. You know I'll be with you every step of the way, don't you?" The solemnity of his words made her tear up again. "I know...Mmmmmm..." She started sobbing anew. "Scullyyyyy....baby, what is it now?" "I'm just happyyyyyy..." "Me too, Scullster. Me too." Doctor Mcnichols reappeared in that moment carrying some more forMs. "Everything all right here?" They both nodded. She sat down at her desk. "Good. I'm gonna give you some forms to fill in, Dana. I also want you to read this paper that contains some do's and don'ts for you to follow. You're going to find there some vitamins I want you to take too." They filled in the forms and gave them back to the doctor. "Is there anything else you'd like to know?" "Yes, actually we'd like to have one of those analysis done to see if the baby is normal." Scully had to smile at her husband's choice of words. "You mean an amniocentesis. Sure, but she'll have to wait a little bit more for that. I'll refer you to the doctor in charge of the exams in due time." Then, she congratulated the new parents and left. "How about you finish getting dressed while I make an appointment for next month?" "OK." He gave her a kiss and went out.
They had been riding back home both of them musing about her pregnancy and its consequences when, out of the blue, Scully spoke. "Mulder, why did you say HE when you referred to the baby in the doctor's office?" He gave her a wide grin. "Just a hunch, Scull. Just a hunch." She smiled back and held his hand all the way back home, knowing that as long as he was with her she was going to be all right. Half an hour later they got back home. "....Scully, please. Lie down for a while, will you?" "Mulder, I'm f..." She was about to make the mistake of saying the word FINE, which she had been avoiding since they got married. She knew how bad he had felt in the past whenever she answered him that way. "All right, I'm a little tired." "You see?" He was giving her a look of I-know-you, which she found totally endearing. She circled his neck with her arms and started kissing him. "Mmmmmmm......I want to believe you're not trying to distract me, are you?" "Is it working?" She was attacking his neck now. He doubted for a second before replying but with all the resolve he could muster he said. "NO. Woman! Go to bed!" He reminded her of another time, when he had ordered her to make him a sandwich while they were playing house. The truth was that even when she'd refused the first time, she couldn't help herself and made him a sub that same night for supper. "Only if you rest with me," she answered coyly. After resting and necking for a while, she fell asleep.
Four Months Into Pregnancy They had finally gotten the results of the exams back. The baby was absolutely normal. Neither they nor the doctors could figure out how a barren woman was able to get pregnant. That's how the baby came to be known as baby miracle. Scully was well now into her second trimester. She still found it hard to believe she was carrying a baby in her womb although her body was very aware of it for she couldn't hold any food down. "Scully, Hon, are you ok?" She had been throwing up all morning so they had both decided to take the day off. "I will be. Give me a minute." He kept caressing her hair and her back in a soothing motion until she was strong enough to stand on her own. She brushed her teeth and drank some water. "I hope the doctor can give you something to help your upset stomach." "Yeah. Anyway, I'm gonna get changed or we'll be late for my appointment." They went into the bedroom and he helped her get into some pants and a shirt. "Did you remember to tell Mom about today?" "Yes, I did." "What do you think she's going to say?" "If she was that ecstatic when we got married, I imagine she'll be thrilled." "I hope so." Half an hour later they were at the doctor's office where Scully was given some drops to help her with her vomiting problem and was shocked to discover she had lost so much weight when she was supposed to be gaining it. Later they headed to the restaurant where they were to meet Maggie. They got there quite early so they sat down to wait for her. "OK, Mulder. Out with it." She knew he was dying to make an observation about her weight loss but had kept silent so as not to bother her. "Dammit! I'm worried, ok? Did you see how much weight you've lost? You should have gained it, for crying out loud." His eyes were watering and his lower lip was quivering. She moved her chair even closer to his and hugged him. "Shhhh, Mulder. You heard what doctor Mcnichols said. The baby is fine and so am I. This is quite normal for pregnant women and with the drops she prescribed for me I should be fine." Suddenly they heard a startled voice coming from behind. "You are pregnant?!" Maggie Scully's eyes were almost popping out. "That was not they way we were planning to tell you, Mom, but.....yeah, I am." "Hi, Maggie." "For real?" They both chuckled. "Yeah, Mom. For real." "But ho..." "It's a miracle." Scully's simple answer seemed to be enough for Maggie. "Oh, I can't believe it! Such wonderful news!" She kissed them and congratulated them. "Now, I want to know everything." "Well, it all started one rainy night. We were bored and..." "Mulder!" His wife slapped him. "How far along are you, dear?" "Four months." "Four? You're barely showing." "I've been throwing up a lot." The waiter interrupted in that minute and took their order. He returned later with the food they had ordered. Scully couldn't help noticing Mulder checking her plate every five minutes. When she set the silverware down he started. "Everything, Scully." "Mulder, I can't eat anymore. I'm bloated already." "You're not bloated. That's our son there." "You know it's a boy?" Maggie butted in. "No, Mom. Mulder has a hunch." "Oh." She smiled. "Yeah, Mulder. My stomach was flat before lunch and now my baby decided to show up." Obviously she was mocking him. "Why not? Right kiddo?" He tenderly kissed her tummy. "Now, you're mommy needs to finish her meal or you're gonna be all skinny." She just ate two or three morsels for her husband's state of mind. "Have you told your boss yet?" That was a touchy subject and not because she wasn't planning on hiding it from the bureau. But because of her maternity leave. Were it for Mulder, she would be starting it right know. "No, we haven't." "When are you planning to do it?" Mulder and Scully exchanged nervous looks. "Is something wrong?" Pause. "The thing is that to tell Skinner about the baby we should also tell him we are married." "You mean he still doesn't know? Baby, When you told me and your three friends to keep your marriage quiet, I thought you meant for a little while. I imagined he would know by now." "Don't you get it, Mom? If we tell him they will automatically separate us." She was desperately trying to make her understand. "Dana, I don't mean to interfere but...is that so terrible?" Scully looked at Mulder begging him with her eyes to make Maggie understand. Her anger rose when she saw him remain silent and lower his eyes. "Maybe it's not as important for him as it is for me." She whispered. "Scully, I don't think this is the place to discuss it." He kept looking down. Maggie sensed their discomfort and tried to defuse the tense atmosphere by changing the subject. After a couple of minutes Mulder asked for the check, they said goodbye to her and headed home.
Georgetown They had both remained silent on the way back home, each of them mulling over what had transpired back at the restaurant. They knew they had to come to terms with the whole thing eventually but apparently, they were both avoiding a confrontation. It was Scully who broke the silence once they were ensconced in the sofa. "Mulder, I'm going to be very clear about this. I am not going to stop working until it's time to deliver the baby. But I can promise you that at the first sign of trouble, I'll stop. No matter what." "By then it might be too late," he replied seriously. "Mulder, I know you want the best for me and the baby. But I need to work too. I can't stay at home doing nothing while you bring the dough." He gave her a small smile. "Scully, I'm not saying you should stop working at all. All I'm saying is that I would like you to stop..." At this point she interrupted him. "...to stop working as from now." "No. What I meant is that you should take it easy from now on. If not for you, then for the baby." "Are you implying I am not taking care of my baby?!" By now, they were almost shouting. Mulder stood up and started pacing. "Stop putting words in my mouth, Scully!!!" "And you, stop yelling at me!!!" With tears running down her cheeks, she dashed toward their bedroom and slammed the door. "Fuck hormones!" he shouted to no one. He debated whether to follow her or give her some time to cool off. He chose the former knowing she would probably misinterpret his intention of giving her some space as if he didn't care enough about her. Tiptoeing around not to startle her, he opened the door, walked in and kneeled by the bed. Without uttering a word, he took the hair brush she always had on the night table and proceeded to comb her hair. The continuous motion of the brush had a soothing effect on Scully. He had discovered this useful trick early on in their partnership and had used it repeatedly with amazing effect. Scully's encouraging sounds were proof it had worked unfailingly once more. He put the brush on the blanket and gave her a kiss on her nape. "Moreeee...." He chuckled. "Only if you promise we can keep on talking and put this matter to rest." She nodded and gave him the brush back. He chose to sit behind her with Scully sitting between his legs. "I'm sorry, Mulder." "It's ok." "I just...I don't want them to separate us. That's all." He had to make an effort to hear her 'cause she was hugging her knees and had rested her face in between them. "Scully, that's the last thing I want but what if it happens? We have to be prepared for whatever decision they might make." "You sound like a Boy Scout. 'Be prepared'" He chuckled and for a moment, stopped brushing her hair. She reminded him of his task by bopping him with the brush on his head. "Ouch! All right, all right. Mmmmm. I think your brother's right. I'm whipped." "Charlie said that?" "Scully, baby, does it sound like something Billy boy would have said?" His tone of voice was totally sarcastic. She didn't bother with a reply; instead, she turned round and lay down on him. "Mulder, I don't want you to have another partner." She whispered. "Is that what has been bothering you so much?" He felt her nod. "Scully. Look at me. You will always be my only partner, in work as in life. And if they assigned me someone else, I would never even think of comparing her to you." "her?" She raised one eyebrow. "It was just a manner of speaking." "They'd better not pair you with a woman." To his ears, it sounded like a threat but deep inside it made him feel loved. They fell asleep in each other's' arms.
Seventh Month Into Pregnancy Telling Skinner had not been as bad as they'd first thought it would be. His initial reaction had been amazement at his agents' skill to keep their marital status under wraps for almost two years. However, he understood later that their decision had been wise or else they'd been separated immediately. Now, with things going smoother with the bureau and the consortium practically disbanded, he had been able to keep them working together at least after Scully's maternity leave was over. For now, though, she was restricted to teaching at Quantico. They were both sitting in front of the computer, Mulder's hand absentmindedly caressing her belly, playing one of their favorite games: questions and answers, the cd version. "..yeah, well. It just made me feel embarrassed, that's all." "Why would you feel embarrassed, Scully? It's pretty normal. People get married everyday." "I know that. But being in front of the judge with this big belly was like, I don't know, as if we'd chosen a shotgun wedding." "But you know it wasn't. We've been married for almost two years now. We just chose to get married in front a priest instead of a judge. And now we decided to make it official. Besides, who cares what people think." He pressed start and a new game began. "I do, Mulder. I don't like people to think I am careless and...and..." Mulder managed to shut her up by kissing her passionately. "Now, can we get started? I remember someone promised to beat me up." "Ok. But hand me some chocolate drops first," she replied resignedly. "A girl's best friend." She looked at him from the corner of her eye daring him to make another comment. "Here we go, Scullster. You're contestant 1, I'm contestant 2 and the nasty lady is number three." "How...how'd you know she's nasty? You can only hear her voice." She could barely separate her jaws as the chocolate had melted in between her teeth. Therefore, her voice sounded funny. "Huh, with that voice, she must be." He tried to mimic her voice, which made them burst out laughing. "Ooops. It's already started. First question's for you, Scull. Geography." She read it on the screen "That one's easy. The Balkans." She got one thousand dollars. After question number six, she lost. "Oooh. Too bad, Scullster." The way he was looking at her showed he was not sorry at all. "Ha! Chemistry! Let's see how good you are at it." He got that one right. "Yeah! I'm the best!" He took the piece of chocolate she had in her hand and swallowed it in one gulp. "Mulder! You've just started. And after the last game I can't believe you're so full of yourself." Fifteen minutes later Mulder hadn't lost yet and Scully began yawning. "Scull, are you tired?" "Yeah, of not playing. Mulder, when are you going to lose? Don't get me wrong. I love to see you win and I love how much you know but it's been fifteen minutesssss." He loved to hear her whining. "Don't worry, Honey. We can share my profits. You know everything I win is yours." He flashed her one of his charming smiles. She was about to make a retort when the phone rang. "Hi, mom.... Yeah, I remember.... Four sharp, right?....Ok, mom. See you there." She hung up, stood behind her husband and wrapped her arms round his neck. "Mulder, baby. You have to go change. Mom will be waiting for us at the store in an hour." "Can't I play five more minutes, Scullyyyyyy?" He sounded like a little boy. "No, you can't. I don't wanna be late. Come on." He shut off the computer and followed his wife to the bedroom, where they got ready for shopping.
Baby Store Maggie was waiting for them inside when they spotted her perusing the onesies section. "Hi, Mom. Are you going to add that one to my growing collection?" "Well, I'm his grandmother. I'm entitled to spoil him." "I see Mulder's got you thinking it's a boy too." "No, I have a hunch too." She winked at his son-in-law. "Ok, Mulder. Let's see. First, we need the crib." "Oh, honey. The shop-assistant has already showed me some beautiful ones. Let me show you." They chose a white one made of wood with some matching sheets and blankets. Half an hour later, Scully was starting to get nervous. Mulder was completely carried away, going back and forth all around the store showing her several things he'd picked out. "Mulder, don't you think we've bought him enough toys so far?" The shop assistant couldn't avoid giggling. However, when she saw Scully's icy stare he found a way to keep it in check. "But Scully. Check these ones. They are so nice and look at the colors and sounds..." He was right. They were beautiful and they were definitely going to spoil him rotten. She allowed herself to do something she never thought she would have done before. Well, at least before Mulder. She stood on tiptoes and kissed him openly. And not a simple peck. "Mmmmmmmm, Scully. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. But what's the occasion?" "I love you so much." She loved to do these things for him. It made her feel so good to see him glowing and puffing himself with pride. She felt proud too whenever she could give him back some of what had been unjustly taken from him. "I love you too, Scully. And the baby." Someone coughed behind them to remind them of her presence. "Shall we get some diapers, Dana?" Her mother was positively beaming. She loved to see them being so affectionate toward each other. Two hours later and a couple of hundred dollars less they were back home.
Nine months Into Pregnancy The nursery was ready. It was full to the brim with things for the baby. The happy parents were having breakfast in bed talking about babies' names. "So, are we set on that?... Oh, yeah, Mulder. Right there. Ahhh..." "Scully, we've been set on that name from day one. Shall I press a little bit more?" "Yeah, harder and in circles, please. Mmmmmm...delicious.... Aaaahhhhhh...." Scully was in heaven. Mulder's hands were massaging her swollen feet with delicate movements. "But what if it's a girl?" "It's not a girl, Scully. Relax." "But what if it is? I'd really feel better if we a picked a girl's name too, you know." "All right. What name do you have in mind?" "No,no,no,no,no,no. If I tell you first you're just going to agree with me so that we don't have to talk about it any longer." He groaned and stretched by her side. "Ok... Mmmm... I love Dana just because it's a part of you. But there's only one Dana for me so that one's out...There's Katherine too. I've always liked that name." She was giving him a You-could-have-tried-harder look. "I swear, Scully! I even wanted Samantha to be called Katherine. But of course, my parents didn't listen to me. Anyway..." He stopped talking when he saw her grimace. She wasn't prepared when the first contraction hit her forcefully. "Scully, are you all right?" "Mmmmmmm.....I'm having a cont...contraction." She was breathing irregularly. "What should I do, Scully? What should I do?!" "Calm down, Mulder! That's what you should do." "I'm sorry. It's just that I've never been through this before." She squeezed his hand. "Oh, and I have a lot of experience." He looked at her sheepishly. After two more contractions she made up her mind. "Mulder, do you think you can phone doctor Mcnichols?" "Sure. I'll be right back." "Where are you going?" She panted. "To grab the phone, Scully." "Mulder, there's a phone on your bedside table!" "Oh." He made a dash to the table but in the process tripped with the sneakers he'd left by the bed. "Damn!" He rubbed his forehead where a bump was already starting to take shape. "Are you ok?" Another contraction hit her along with something liquid soaking through her clothes . "I should be the one asking you that. Are you ok?" She couldn't help smiling at the situation, which looked like an episode out of the Three Stooges. "Yeah, but I belive my water's broken. I feel a little sore, though. As you probably can imagine this is quite painfuuuuuuuuuuuuuul!!!" "They're coming quite fast, Scully." "That's why I want you to phone the doctor, Mulder!" Without another word, he picked up the phone and dialed.
Five minutes later an ambulance was taking Scully and Mulder to the hospital. Once they got there, a nurse helped Scully settle in a comfortable room and another doctor switched a couple of monitors to keep track of her and the baby's heart rate and blood pressure. "Everything looks fine. The baby is already in position and you're 7 centimeters dilated. Are you gonna ask for an epidural?" Mulder looked at her begging her with his eyes to comply. He hated to see her suffering. "Yeah. Has doctor Mcnichols arrived yet?" "Yes, She's outside talking to the nurse." No sooner had she said that than the door opened and the doctor came in. "Hi, Dana. I see the little one is ready to come out." "Hello, doctor. Do you think I can have an ep..." She was holding on to Mulder's hand so tight it was becoming numb. "Come on, Dana. It's time to exercise that breathing you've been practicing." The doctor encouraged her. "Easier said than done." A second later it was over. "I'm gonna ask the anesthesiologist to come over and give you the miraculous drug. I'll be right back." "Scully, do you want me to call your mom?" "Why are you whispering, Mulder?" "I don't know." He shrugged. "No. I don't want anybody around. Just you, Mulder. Only you." Her eyes had begun to well up. "OK, Sweetie. Relax. Shhhh." "I'm scared," she whispered. "Me too. Have you realized what is going to happen now, Scully? There won't be two of us any more. There will be three." "And you're becoming aware of it now?" She would have smiled hadn't it been so painful to do so. "No....Well, Yeah. It's just that now we're gonna have this tiny human being who is..." She interrupted him. "Who is going to have his dad's gorgeous looks and charming smiles and will have me wrapped around his little finger. Oh, yeah." The monitor beeped foreshadowing the oncoming contraction. So far, she had been able to ride them out without uttering a single sound but this one proved to be her undoing. "Ahhhhhhhh...." "Where's the damn doctor with the shot?!!!" The worst thing that could ever happen to Mulder was to see his wife in pain and even worse was the fact that there was nothing he could do about it. Therefore, he was ready to move heaven and earth to get help and stop her torment. His screams were effective for the doctor, three nurses and the anesthesiologist showed up but after another check up it was determined her stage was too advance for an epidural. So, she was sent staight to the delivery room. As Mulder was required to change into scrubs he dropped her hand just when they were getting there. "Mulder! Where are you going?!" She was looking at him frantically, almost raising from the stretcher. "Shhhh. Scully. Relax. Lay down, that's it." "Mulder???" She was sobbing now. "I have to change into scrubs, baby. They don't let me get in like this. It wouldn't be good for the baby. You know that, don't you?" Desperately, he was trying to make her understand. Finally she nodded and released his hands. Before disappearing she heard him shout something like 'don't get started without me' over his shoulder. The nurses propped Scully on a new stretcher and placed her legs on stirrups. She had previously thought being like this was going to be embarrassing. Now she understood her mistake; there was nothing to be embarrassed about. She was going to have her baby. She knew Mulder was coming. She could hear his voice encouraging her from the hall. "I'm coming, Scully! Relax! Breathe!" 'I am breathing, you dork. Otherwise I would be dead.' She smirked. He burst into the room so disheveled, crooked cap and knots undone, that he was a funny sight for her sore eyes. "What?" he asked curiously. "Forget it." "Ok, Dana. I want you to push on your next contraction. Here comes. Push now! A little bit more! That's it. Relax, now." Mulder was supporting her back at the same time he was whispering sweet words to her. "I love you, Scullster. So much." She couldn't answer him with words but the look she gave him was reply enough. "One more time. Give me a big push now." "Wasn't the last one big enough?" Scully whined. "No. Come on, do it and you'll have your baby with you in no time." She gave a mighty push that left her exhausted. "I need....to relax....a bit...." She panted. "Are you all right?" She was getting paler, which made him get even more ansty, if that was possible. "Just dandy." "Dana, you with me?" She nodded. "I need another one, Sweetie. I don't think it'll take much longer, believe me." But it took much longer. The doctor had to explain to a frantic Mulder why it was taking so long for his wife to deliver the baby. "Mr Mulder, your wife's bone structure is too small and even with the episiotomy she'll require a little bit more to facilitate the childbirth. I believe one more push will do the trick. Talk to her through it. It'll help her." He hugged Scully sideways and opened his heart to her once more. "Scully, I know you're tired. But I also know you're strong. In fact, you're the strongest woman I've ever met. I have such faith in you, baby. And that little one who's fighting to meet us too, you know. Help him, Scully. Help him as you've always helped me. You are the pillar of this family, Scully. You are my rock, my touchstone. I'll never be able to thank you for everything you've done for me and everything you've given me, this miracle included. You are my everything. I love you with all my strength." With a giant push and a tremendous scream that resembled a cry of war, William Mulder was born. "You've got a beautiful baby boy, Mulders! Do you want to do the honors?" Doctor Mcnichols handed him the scissors and he cut the cord. Sobbing openly, he held his son in his arms and turned around to lay it in his mom's arms. However, when he looked at her, she was not looking back, nor was she smiling or reaching to hold her son for that matter. She simply lay unconscious. "Scully! Scully!!!" A nurse came by and seeing he was shaking, took his son from him. He was torn between checking his son and helping his wife. The doctor was already by her side checking her vitals. "Scully!!! Come on!!! You can't do this to me now!!! Baby, we have our miracle here. He wants his mommy and I want his mommy too." He was stroking her everywhere and not paying real attention to what the doctor was telling him. "Mr Mulder, did you hear what I said? She just passed out. It's not so strange after such a strenuous experience." When the doctor put her hand on his elbow, he came out of his stupor and everything she'd said before began to sink in. "She's going to be all right, isn't she? She has to be." "Yes, sir. She's going to be just fine. So if you let the nurse take her back to her room, they'll settle her there so she can rest. You should do the same." "No, not till I can take my son with me." She knew Scully wouldn't want it any other way. "All right. I'll make an exception 'cause it's not hospital's policy. But I'll let you take him with you as soon as I'm finished examining him." "How does he look?" "Everything looks fantastic. Here, take a look at the chart yourself." "I think I'll leave that to my wife." She smiled. After the longest half an hour for Mulder, he was back in the room with a sleeping Scully. He placed a chair between her bed and his son's plastic crib and sat down. "Hey, little one. I'm your daddy. You know, I never thought I would be holding you but life proved me wrong. It gave me your mom, the most beautiful woman in the universe and then you, the most beautiful baby." He was sure his face was showing the adoration and utter love he felt at the moment, not only for his son but also for his wife. "Hey, son. Look. That woman lying in the bed is your mom. She's sleeping now 'cause she was really exhausted. You gave her quite a work out." His son was resting on his legs and both were sharing a profound look, almost peering into each other's souls. The idyll was interrupted by Scully's moaning from the bed. "I think your mommy is waking up." He stood up and holding his son with his left arm, he took his wife's hand in his right one. "Mmmmulder....what happened? Where's the baby?" She suddenly sat up still dazed from her ordeal. "Shhhh...Sweetie. It's ok. He's just fine. Look, he's right here and he's dying to say hi to you." He placed the baby on her waiting arms and saw her examining him herself in detail, as if trying to believe her eyes. "He really is fine, Mulder?" she asked with a little tremor in her voice. "Yes, Scully. He is great. There's a little problem, though." "What???" she asked in panic. "He looks a little bit like me." He gave her one of his full wattage smiles. "Mulder, don't scare me like that!" She smiled. "What? Is it so scary for you that the little guy takes after me in some way?" "You know that's not what I meant. Ah! He does look like you. Look! He has fair hair and that pouty mouth is yours, no doubt." "What about your mouth? It's pouty too, you know." "My mouth is not pouty. It's just...small." They shared another smile. "I'm glad he's got your nose, though." He ran a finger down the baby's nose. "Mulder, I love your nose. I think it's very you." She took his face in her hands and kissed him there. He repaid her by kissing her lips but soon had to stop due to their son's demanding wails. "Oooh. You must be hungry, aren't you?" She opened her robe and he eagerly reached for her breast, which made both parents chuckle. "Mulder, did they feed him before?" "Yeah. They gave him formula right after cleaning him up but apparently he was waiting for his mom's treat." A soft knock was heard. "Will, your first visitor's here. Let's see who it is." Mulder opened the door and an ebullient Maggie filled him with kisses, hugs and presents. "Ooooh, Sweetie. He's gorgeous. He looks like you, Fox but with Dana's eyes and nose." He winked at him. "Hi, Mom. I'm fine. How are you?" Scully asked sarcastically. "Oh, Honey. I'm sorry. I was enchanted by my grandson. Now, tell me. How are you? Fox called and said you passed out." She gave her mom the abridged version of the facts while Mulder was perusing through the gifts bag Maggie had brought. "Hey, kiddo. Check this out. Isn't it neat?" He was holding a Pooh Bear in front of his son. "I'm sorry, Maggie. But I think he prefers my present best." He said mockingly while his son contented himself with staring at the ET stuffed alien his dad had bought for him. They spent an hour talking before the next visitors arrived. "Is the coast clear?" A short man with glasses asked. "Come in, Frohicke." The other two gunmen followed bringing presents and congratulations. "A giant bear? I was looking foward to How To Hack For Beginners, new edition." Mulder commented playfully while showing Scully the present. "Thank you, guys. You shouldn't have bothered." She was always the tactful one. "Hey! We're his uncles!" Frohicke added. They all left when they saw Scully starting to nod off. "Bye, Honey. I'll call you tonight." Maggie closed the door. "Why don't you get some rest, Scull. I'll stay with the little critter here." "Mulder, c'mere." She motioned him to sit on the bed. "I want to thank you for everything." She stopped him with a finger on his lips when he was about to retort. "For your support, for your love and specially for giving me our miracle." She was trying hard not to cry again but a small tear managed to make it through her resolve. "You owe me nothing, Scully." He was caressing her cheeks with his fingertips. "Mulder, for once could you just say you're welcome?" He grinned. "You're welcome. Now, go to sleep." He kissed each of her eyes and watched her give in to slumber. "Sweet dreams." He went round the bed and watched his son in his crib, who, unlike his mother, was wide awake. He took him in his arms and sat once more in the chair, which was now by the window. "I think you want your dad to tell you a story before taking your nap, don't you?" As if on cue, the baby pressed his lips together, which his dad interpreted as his first smile. "Once upon a time, there was a lonely man wandering around the world until one day a beautiful lady crossed his way. The lonely man didn't want to admit himself he was falling in love with the lady. But one day she was taken away from him and he realized how much he needed her and how much he loved her. He swore to himself always to protect her. They went through many adventures together till they both understood they wanted to be together all the time. So they got married and two years later, they had the most wonderful baby boy that was named William. Now the lonely man had two people to adore and two people to protect but he knew one day his son would help him protect his mom too. That's why he was made a knight." He raised his right hand and placed his stretched fingers first on the baby's left side of the head and next on his right, as if he were actually performing the knight's ceremony. Finally he kissed his forehead. "I now pronounce you Sir William, son of Lady mommy. Do you promise to stay out of trouble and love Lady mommy and daddy?" He put his ear by the baby's mouth. "You do?. Ok, then. I'll remind you of your oath in a couple of years." It was in that moment when he heard the distinctive sound of giggling coming from the bed. He got up carrying little Will and looked at his wife to see if she was having a nightmare or was actually awake. "I can't believe it! You see this, Will? Mommy is laughing at us." "I was not laughing at him but at you." He pretended to be insulted. "You hurt me, Scully." "Hand me the baby, Mulder." She was still smiling when he turned round and told her he was going to the cafeteria. "Don't be long King Daddy," she whispered. He winked at her and left. The End
