Summary: Doggett is there to pick up the pieces when Mulder abandons Scully.

Author's Note: First of all, I have to offer my sincere apologies to Mulder. I made him look really bad in this story.

I had to think of something to explain his departure and this is what I came up with. I hope CC thinks of something much better that doesn't make Mulder look like a jerk. I will miss Mulder greatly in Season 9. (I'm sorry, Mulder!) Secondly, this story starts off with lots of angst, but the rest is pure fluff.

Enjoy!

Dana Scully couldn't believe what she had just read. But there it was in black and white resting in her trembling hands.

In shock she looked at the letter again. It was written by hand on plain white paper and had been folded in half. She studied the writing closely. It was definitely Mulder's. But it was the contents she couldn't believe. She read the letter again.

Dear Scully,

I'm sorry, because I know that this will come as a shock to you, especially after the kiss we just shared last night. I just can't do this. I won't do this. I have caused you so much pain in the years we have worked together and I think it is best that I just remove myself from your life. You deserve love, happiness, stability, and normalcy. I just can't seem to provide those things for you. This has been the most painful decision I have ever had to make, but I think in the end it will be the best for you. I know you will be an excellent mother to William and I will carry him in my heart always. I love you, Scully. I always have and I always will.

Mulder

Tears spilled onto the page and Scully crumpled to the floor in a heap, the words finally sinking in. Mulder had left her!

And he was never coming back! "Noooo!" She cried out in anguish. "No!" Deep sobs racked her body and she cried until no more tears came. Still lying on the floor, her eyes red and puffy, she stared at the ceiling as if in a trance. How could he? How could he just up and leave her and William?

For God's sake, it was his baby! The sadness she was feeling was quickly turning into anger. It welled up from deep within her and she crumpled the letter into a ball and threw it away. Ditched again! Over the eight years she had known him, hadn't she learned that Mulder always ditched her? Why had she even thought that the baby might change things? Her inner voice reprimanded herself, "Stupid, silly girl! What has loving Mulder ever brought you but pain? Get a grip, girl; he did you a favor!" Then another thought shot through her mind. What if Mulder hadn't written the letter? What if he was kidnapped and his captors wrote the letter to explain his disappearance? Or what if they had forced him to write the letter? Guilt from her first thoughts plagued her.

With a shred of hope she crawled over to where she had thrown the letter and smoothed it out on the floor. It sure looked like Mulder's writing, but maybe it was forged. She needed to find out right away. Grabbing the phone she dialed Doggett's number.

"Hello?" John Doggett answered sleepily.

She heard the grogginess in his voice and felt a pang of guilt.

In her emotional turmoil she hadn't realized it was still very early in the morning. "Good morning, Agent Doggett. I'm sorry to wake you," Scully said sheepishly.

"Agent Scully, is that you?" he asked concerned. He could hear the strain in her voice.

"Yes. I'm sorry; I didn't realize the time. I'll call you again at a better hour," she said not wanting to disturb him anymore.

He felt something was wrong. Her voice had an urgency to it. "No, it's alright. What is it?" he asked.

She sighed deeply. "I need your help. I need you to have a handwriting analysis run for me. I'd come into the office to give it to you, but with Will"

He wouldn't let her finish. The last thing she needed was to go to the office the day after she gave birth! "Don't come in.

I'll stop by on the way." He could hear her sigh of relief on the other end. "What's so important about this anyway?"

"You'll see when you get here," she said and hung up. Just then William let out a cry and Scully padded into his room.

She took the baby out of his crib and held him tightly to her chest, rocking him back and forth. Instantly he stopped crying. She breathed in his sweet baby smell and a tear trickled down her face. How could Mulder remove himself from William's life just like that? She had a bad feeling deep within the pit of her stomach that said Mulder had written that letter of his own accord. She wiped the tear from her cheek and sat down in the rocking chair to nurse the baby.

The kiss that she and Mulder had shared last night was one that she had waited for for as long as she could remember. It was sweet, intimate, tender, and full of love. A kiss that lead to another, more passionate one until William's cry interrupted it. She had thought that through that kiss, Mulder had finally opened his heart to her and was saying that he loved her and would always be there for her and the baby.

How could she have been so wrong? She sighed again deeply, thinking how the rest of the night didn't pan out as she had hoped. Mulder had stayed a while longer, just watching her nurse William. Then with a simple, "I better go," he got up, kissed the baby and kissed Scully on the forehead and left.

She was so surprised at his wanting to go, that she didn't say, "No, Mulder, please stay," until he was already at the door.

"I better go," he repeated again, a tinge of sadness tainting his voice. Then the door fell shut and he was gone. She never imagined she'd have a Dear JohnJane, letter in the morning.

The baby finished nursing and Scully put him asleep in his crib. Quickly she went to the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror. The sight before her was horrifying. She looked incredibly tired, with dark circles under her red and puffy eyes. Her hair was mussed and her nightgown hung open, exposing her engorged breasts. She splashed some cold water onto her face and toweled it off. Running a comb through her hair she pulled it back into a neat ponytail just as the doorbell rang. Quickly she pulled on a clean robe and ran to the door.

"Thanks for coming, Agent Doggett," she said to the tall and well dressed man who stood before her.

His face showed concern, and at the sight of her red eyes that concern grew. "Are you alright?" he asked gently, laying his hand on her upper arm.

"Yes," she said her voice wavering at his touch. She had to keep her composure. Producing the crumpled letter, she handed it to him.

Taking it from her, he quickly read it. He couldn't believe what he just read and anger mounted inside him. He left her!

That bastard! How could he? Keeping his anger in check he said with forced evenness, "You want me to have this checked for authenticity?"

"Yes, please. There are lots of Mulder's handwriting samples in the files," she said looking down. She suddenly felt ashamed, knowing what he must think, and added, "I want to make sure there wasn't any foul play here."

"There certainly was foul play," Doggett thought to himself, "but not the type she is looking for."

"I'll have it analyzed and call you as soon as I know something," he said gently.

His heart went out to her for he could see the pain in her eyes.

"Thank you so much," Scully said gratefully. Just then William started crying.

"You better go," Doggett said nodding toward the sound of the cries. "I'll call you soon."

"Thanks," she said and closed the door.

Doggett drove to work and handed the letter over for analysis. He asked the handwriting expert to rush this for it was an important, urgent matter. Deciding to hunt for some information himself, Doggett drove to Mulder's Apartment.

Mulder's door was ajar and he took out his gun, slowly pushing the door open. With shock he stared at what he found. Mulder was searching his own desk for something.

Finally he produced two computer disks and stuffed them in a bag. Rushing to the door, he froze, surprised to see Doggett standing there.

"You bastard! You really are leaving her!" Doggett spat out angrily.

"This is none of your business," Mulder said coldly.

"She made it my business. Do you even realize what she's going through? She thinks you might have been kidnapped and forced to write that letter!" Doggett's anger kept mounting.

Pain reflected in Mulder's eyes. "Stay out of this, Doggett.

You don't understand the situation."

"Like hell I don't! I understand it perfectly. You are walking out on Agent Scully and your baby!"

"I'm doing what's best for them. It may not seem like it now, but in the long run"

"That's a load of bull! You're running away from your responsibility at a time when she needs you most. What kind of man are you?!" Doggett glared at him.

Mulder's anger flared. "The kind that doesn't owe you any explanations. Now get out of my way," he said, trying to get to the door.

Doggett blocked his way and stood just inches from his face.

He looked him straight in the eyes and said in a low, even voice, "You owe her. She loves you and she needs you. Go back to her and do the right thing."

He met his gaze and answered, "I am doing the right thing."

Then he pushed past him and left.

The anger in him boiled over and Doggett slammed his fist against the wall, wishing it were Mulder's face. How could he? What kind of man just up and leaves his lover and baby?

A first-class jerk, that's what kind. He ran his hands through his hair, trying to regain his control. How did a man like Mulder end up with a gem like Dana Scully anyway? One thing was for sure, had he been in Mulder's shoes; he never would have abandoned her. Never. A woman like that was just too precious. Now he was left to pick up the pieces. And he would. He resolved to be there for her in anyway she'd let him.

His cell phone rang and he answered it. "Doggett."

"Hi, Agent Doggett, this is Winters at the lab. I had a chance to compare the handwriting on the letter to the handwriting samples you gave me. The letter was definitely written by Mulder. No forgery."

"Thanks, Agent Winters," Doggett said not surprised in the least. "Could you keep this under wraps? There is no need for anyone else to know about this." Perhaps he could spare Scully some shame. The last thing she needed was having this letter hit the rumor mill. She had been the main topic of office gossip for several months now. It sickened him how people talked behind her back and he felt more and more protective of her.

"Sure thing, Agent Doggett," Winters said understanding.

"Thanks," Doggett said and hung up. He started dialing Scully's number, then he thought better of it and canceled the call. He would tell her in person.

Scully opened the door, finding Doggett on the other side.

Her eyes lit up with a mixture of hope, fear, and worry.

"Come in," she said, still wearing her robe. "What did you find out?"

Doggett sighed, not knowing how to tell her this gently. He decided just to say it flat out. "The handwriting is Mulder's," he said, searching her eyes. He could see the hope vanish and pain take its place.

"The lab was absolutely positive about that?" she asked almost meekly.

"Yes. I'm so sorry, Agent Scully," he said wanting more than anything to wash away the pain. He decided not to tell her of his encounter with Mulder. That would just cause her even more anguish.

She stood there silently; face down, letting the full meaning sink in. Her body began to tremble. Doggett reached out for her and enfolded her in his arms. The moment her head rested on his chest, the tears spilled out. She could not hold them in. Silently she cried into his shirt. He held her tightly, stroking her back gently. His heart broke for her and he wished there was something he could do to ease her pain. He hated Mulder for doing this to her. He would never understand that man. Mulder's actions went against everything he believed.

William's cry could be heard from the bedroom. Scully moved to get him, but Doggett said, "I'll get him." He sat Scully down on the couch and headed for the baby's room.

Almost instantly William stopped crying and five minutes later, Doggett emerged holding a content baby in his arms.

"All this little fellow needed was a fresh diaper and some company," Doggett said, smiling at him.

Scully was surprised. "You changed his diaper?"

"Of course. I hope you don't mind. But it's been a while. I hope I did it right."

Scully knew he must have been referring to his murdered son, Luke. "I'm sure you did a great job. Thank you," she said gratefully.

Doggett gazed at the baby's face. It was so angelic, so perfect with a button nose that he hoped would not look like Mulder's and beautiful big blue eyes just like his mother's. William's tongue started rooting and Doggett knew he was hungry.

"Looks like this little guy is hungry," he said, gently handing him over to his mother.

"Thanks," she said taking the little bundle from him. She placed him at her breast and covered herself with a nearby receiving blanket. She had briefly thought about what Doggett would think nursing the baby in front of him, but she was just too tired and too emotionally spent to really care.

Besides, his presence didn't bother her in the least; it actually brought her comfort.

Doggett had averted his eyes as she latched the baby on. He was rather surprised that she did not ask him to leave before starting to feed him. He looked at her. Even though she was tired and had red-rimmed eyes, she was beautiful. She was a strong woman and he knew she'd make it through this. He just wished she could have been spared all this pain.

Unnecessary pain in Doggett's opinion.

"Speaking of hungry, have you eaten anything today?" He asked.

Scully hadn't even thought of eating. "No, actually."

"Let me make something for you before I have to head back to the office," Doggett offered.

"Oh, Agent Doggett, that's not necessary," she said then reconsidered as her tummy growled. "Well, if it's not too much of an inconvenience"

"Not at all," he said standing up and going into the kitchen.

He looked around and helped himself to the ingredients he needed. Fifteen minutes later, he was carrying a plate containing a ham and cheese omelet, toast and a cup of decaffeinated coffee.

Scully had finished nursing William and he was lying on the couch fast asleep. "That smells terrific!" she exclaimed realizing how very hungry she was. "Thank you so much."

"No problem." Seeing how tired she was, he asked, "Can I call your mother for you? Maybe she can come by and let you get some sleep."

"Thanks, but she's actually out of town. My younger brother just injured his back and he is on complete bed rest for the next two weeks. She didn't want to leave me, but I insisted and I thought Mulder would be here" Her voice trailed off as fresh pain invaded her heart.

Doggett took her hand in his and looked into her eyes. "I can't imagine how hard this must be for you, especially with the added challenge of a newborn, but you are a strong woman, Agent Scully, and I know you will pull through this."

Scully looked down and a tear escaped her eye. Doggett tenderly wiped it away with his thumb and said softly, "I want you to know I'll be there for you in any way I can.

Please don't be too proud to ask for my help. I want to give it."

She was deeply touched by his words. Why couldn't Mulder have said them? She was beginning to realize how very different Mulder and Doggett were. "Thanks," she managed to say. "Thanks for everything you have already done. It means a lot to me."

"I have to go now. I'm sure Kersh is wondering where I am.

But I'll be back tonight with dinner, okay?"

"Oh, you don't need to bring dinner, I can" she started to protest.

"I want to," he said earnestly. "Let me do this for you."

"Okay," she said resigning herself to his generous help.

"I'll see you tonight then," he said and let himself out the door.

It was hard for Doggett to get any work done. All he could think about was Scully and the pain she was suffering. That Mulder would do this to her right after the birth of their baby infuriated him. She deserved so much more in a man. She deserved someone who could love her, be there for her, physically as well as emotionally, and whose first priority was her and the baby. Doggett longed to be that person, but he had never let himself think about it much because she was always off limits to him. Her heart belonged to Mulder that was obvious since the first day he met her.

Finally the workday was over and he headed to the market.

He was going to make his specialty, lasagna, and lots of it so she could eat from it for a few days and not have to worry about cooking.

At about 6:00 he knocked on her door. She opened it holding William in her arms. "Well, hello there big guy," Doggett said to the baby and stroked his cheek. "Don't you look wide awake and full of energy!"

"Yeah, he's wide awake alright," Scully said with a tired sigh.

She stifled a yawn.

"And you look like you're about to fall asleep standing up," he said concerned.

"Feeding my little angel here every three hours around the clock, doesn't leave much time for beauty sleep," she said with a half smile.

"Well, why don't you put him in his bouncer and he and I will cook a delicious dinner for you while you get some sleep."

Doggett suggested.

"That sounds heavenly," Scully said, not having the energy to protest. "But if he gets fussy or"

"No buts. I do have experience with babies, you know," he said taking the little guy from her arms.

"I know," she said her voice tinged with sadness. "You must have been a terrific dad. I see what a natural you are around William." She gently squeezed his arm trying to convey her sympathy for his great loss.

He smiled sadly. A day didn't go by where he did not think of Luke. Even after all these years, the pain was still fresh. It was something he just had to learn to live with. "Go on, get some sleep. I'll take care of everything."

She didn't have to be asked twice. "Thank you," she said and disappeared into the bedroom. The moment her head hit the pillow she was sound asleep.

Doggett put the baby in the bouncer and set him on the kitchen counter. William had an excellent view of all the goings on around him. Doggett showed him each ingredient he used in the lasagna and explained each step to him.

William was fascinated and his eyes followed Doggett's every move. He didn't make a single peep. Once the lasagna was in the oven, Doggett threw together a salad and set the table.

Then he and William sat down on the couch and Doggett played peek-a-boo with him. He smiled. And they say newborns don't smile!

When the lasagna was finished he peeked into Scully's room.

She was lying on the bed fast asleep. He didn't have the heart to wake her and was about to leave the room, when William saw his mommy and cried for her. Instantly Scully woke up to find Doggett and William standing next to the bed.

"I'm sorry," Doggett whispered. "Go back to sleep."

Sitting up Scully said, "No, that's alright, William needs to be fed anyway. Umm, something smells good!"

"Dinner's ready when you are," Doggett said handing the baby to her.

"I'll be there soon." Doggett turned to leave, but Scully grabbed his arm. "Thank you so much. For everything. I really needed that nap and amazingly I feel a lot better."

Doggett smiled brightly. "I'm glad."

About twenty minutes later, they sat down to dinner. It was scrumptious and Scully ate well. "That was so delicious!

Where did you ever learn to cook like this?" she asked amazed.

"Well, when my wife left me, I was forced to learn. I didn't want to end up eating take out every night, so I just taught myself."

She could here the pain in his voice when he mentioned his ex-wife, someone who he had never mentioned to her before, and she reached across the table putting her hand over his.

"You do know what I'm going through, don't you?" She asked gently.

"Yeah, more than you know," he said quietly. It had been a terrible time in his life. "Luckily I had my family to help me through it."

"I'm glad. You know, you can lean on me too. I so appreciate all the help you are giving me and I don't want it to be one-sided."

"Thank you, Agent Scully," he said. But he just wasn't ready to talk quite yet.

"Please call me Dana."

"Only if you call me John," he said with a smile.

"Deal!"

After cleaning up all the dishes Doggett left, promising to check up on her the next day.

Several days passed and each night Doggett would stop by Scully's place and help out, either by cooking dinner or keeping an eye on William while she took a much-needed nap. They also talked a lot, sharing their pain until the burdens became manageable. Tears flowed on several occasions unashamed on both sides. Scully told him of the special love that she and Mulder had shared, of how she had hoped it would turn into a romantic and committed love where they could be a family. Doggett was surprised to hear that she and Mulder had never been lovers and that William was conceived through invitro fertilization. Never in a million years would he have thought that they weren't sleeping together! Doggett was secretly relieved to hear this though. Maybe it would be easier for her to release him from her heart and move on. Doggett also shared the reason for his ex-wife's departure. She was just too overwhelmed with grief over Luke's death and she had become depressed and withdrawn. Instead of getting counseling as Doggett had wished, she decided to leave him and all things associated with their former life behind. The murder and the divorce were the darkest days of Doggett's life.

With each passing day, Scully was getting stronger and stronger and although the pain of Mulder leaving her was still great, she was determined for William's sake to move on.

She owed this drive to move beyond the pain to Doggett, who was always telling her how strong she was, how he admired her and what a wonderful mother she was. Somehow he always seemed to lift her mood, even without words. Just his mere presence was enough to bring her comfort and peace.

No man had ever had such an effect on her before and she was becoming more and more attracted to him. She would catch herself thinking about him when he wasn't with her and highly anticipating their next meeting. She reprimanded herself for having these thoughts and tried hard to push them out of her mind, but to no avail.

It was early Saturday about 2 weeks later when Doggett knocked anxiously on Scully's door. They hadn't seen each other the day before and Doggett found himself missing her tremendously. He couldn't wait to see her again, yearning to look into those beautiful sapphire eyes.

Surprised to hear a knock so early, Scully ran to the door in her robe. She looked through the peephole and saw Doggett.

She smiled and her heart pounded more quickly. "Good morning, John," she said with a big smile on her face. My, did he look handsome! He was wearing a muscle-defining pair of black jeans and a blue T-shirt that accentuated his gorgeous clear blue eyes.

"Good morning," he said and handed her the single red rose he had picked up at the florist on his way over.

"Thank you, John! It's beautiful. How sweet of you," she said happily, noting its color. She wondered if he knew the meaning of a red rose.

"I know I'm here earlier than you expected, but it's such a beautiful day and I thought we could spend it outside.

You've been cooped up between these four walls for the last two weeks and I think it's high time you get a change of scenery."

"That sounds wonderful, but," she said and then hesitated, "I know this might sound silly, but I'm a little apprehensive about going out with William. I mean there is so much stuff I need to bring for him and what if I forget something and how do I go about feeding him in public?"

"Don't worry about any of that. While you get dressed, I'll pack his things and load the stroller and car seat in the car.

And about feeding him: that's the most natural thing in the world. Please don't give it a second thought. Now go get ready," he said.

Somehow her silly worries vanished at his words and she ran into the bedroom excited about the day ahead.

About twenty minutes later she emerged looking more beautiful than Doggett had seen her since William's birth.

She wore her maternity blue jeans, which were already quite loose, and a crisp white shirt with a plunging v-neck, showing off her voluptuous breasts. Her hair was nicely styled and she had even thrown on a pair of pearl stud earrings.

Doggett stared approvingly. "You look beautiful, Dana," he said with an admiring smile. How Mulder could have left this exquisite woman was beyond him.

She blushed at his compliment, mumbling a, "Thank you." It felt good to be dressed in something other than her PJ's and robe for a change, even if it was still maternity wear. She had tried on her pre-pregnancy clothes and they were still too snug around the waistline and her enlarged bust. Like a schoolgirl she had worried about looking "fat" in front of Doggett, but then she had just had William about two weeks ago. Why did she even care what he thought? But she did, and hearing that he found her beautiful made her sing inside.

"Everything is packed and ready," he said picking up William. The baby cooed happily in his arm. Extending his free arm to Scully he said, "Shall we?"

"Yes," she said with a big smile and hooked her arm in his.

Doggett drove them to a large park. They loaded William in his stroller and walked around, taking in the beauty. An abundance of green grass, shade-providing trees, colorful flowers, a couple small lakes, fountains, and benches; the park had it all. Scully luxuriated in finally being out and about. It felt so natural to be walking with Doggett at her side. He had insisted on pushing the stroller himself, saying it was a privileged he hadn't had in a long time. Several people came up to them to admire the baby. William charmed them with his heavenly blue eyes and little smiles.

Scully knew they assumed that Doggett was his father and she said nothing to counter that assumption. She had to admit that she wished he were. Things would have been so much better and happier. Doggett was the kind of man she could always count on. She needed that kind of stability in her life now.

After a long walk around the park, Doggett spread a blanket under a large tree and they settled down with the sandwiches they had bought at a small vendor stand earlier. They ate their sandwiches hungrily and enjoyed the feel of the gentle breeze. When it was time to feed William, Scully had forgotten about her earlier worry about nursing him in public.

She did it without a second thought and Doggett admired her naturalness. As usual, William was asleep after filling his belly. Scully laid him in the stroller then laid herself down on the blanket. She stared at the blue, cloudless sky above.

Doggett laid himself next to her and looked to the heavens as well. They talked quietly for a while and Scully rolled to her side suddenly feeling very tired. Within seconds Scully was fast asleep.

Doggett turned on his side studying the sleeping woman before him. She was beautiful inside and out and he knew that he could no longer deny his feelings for her. In the time they had spent together since William's birth his feelings had grown so strong they had become overwhelming. He was completely in love with her. He thought he had seen love in her eyes several times before, but he wasn't sure. Maybe it was just gratefulness. He didn't want to burden her with his love if that was not how she felt about him. She already had so many burdens and the last thing he ever wanted to do was make her life more difficult. She meant everything to him and all he wanted was her happiness. He couldn't imagine how Mulder could actually desert her and his precious baby.

That act was simply unfathomable to Doggett.

Scully stirred and opened her eyes to find his gazing upon her. She smiled and they brightened a thousand-fold. Before he knew what he was saying, Doggett spoke his thoughts out loud, "How could Mulder ever leave you?" The brightness from her eyes faded and she looked down. Doggett put his hand over hers and blue met blue again. "I would never leave you," he spoke directly from his heart. Scully smiled vibrantly. She knew he spoke the truth and what she wanted more than anything at this moment was for him to kiss her.

He could see the invitation in her eyes and he leaned toward her brushing his lips to hers. The contact was electrifying and they deepened the kiss, their mouths melting into one another as their tongues explored in a tangling dance of fire.

She drew him closer, running her hand across his arm, feeling the muscles ripple under her touch. Their bodies were alive with heightened desire and they clung to each other as if their kiss was the only means for survival. Doggett pulled her back searching her eyes. Beyond the obvious desire he saw love. Just what he had hoped for. She saw it clearly in his eyes as well and they fell into each other again yielding themselves completely.

Suddenly a voice interrupted their kiss. "Get a room!"

Startled, they broke apart, looking in the direction of the voice. They could see a teenage male quickly walking away laughing. They looked at each other and began to laugh as well. "I guess we forgot where we were," Doggett said with a big grin.

"I guess so," Scully agreed, biting her lower lip. "The rest of the world just kind of disappeared at the first touch of his lips," she thought to herself.

Doggett smiled broadly and captured her mouth with his.

She responded instantly and let the fiery sensations sweep her away. Upon parting, they snuggled up to each other, Scully laying her head on his chest. She could hear his heart pounding rapidly and realized her own was doing the same.

She felt such a high from his kiss; her body and mind were reeling.

Doggett couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Holding Scully in his arms like this, kissing her, and having her return his kisses with such passion, made him happier than he could ever remember being. He hoped that this was the start of something permanent and lasting.

As they returned to Scully's Apartment building they were in a playful mood. In the elevator, Scully planted a juicy kiss on Doggett's unsuspecting mouth then raced out as soon as the doors opened. Doggett, pushing William in the stroller, raced out behind her and grabbed her just before she could open her front door. With one clean swoop he picked her up and bought her lips to his in a possessive, desire-laden kiss.

Just then Scully's door opened and a shocked Mrs. Scully stared at them.

"Dana?" she asked unsure, startled by the sight before her.

Doggett and Scully jumped at the sound of her voice and stared back at her. Scully felt like she had been caught redhanded with the forbidden fruit. Gently Doggett set Scully back on her feet.

Finally, she found her voice, "Mom! What are you doing here?"

"I just got back from seeing Charlie and I thought I'd surprise you and see if I could help you out," she said, still staring at the two of them. "But as I can see, you already have someahemhelp," she said directing her gaze on Doggett.

Scully cleared her throat. "You remember John Doggett, my partner."

"Of course," she said taking his extended hand.

"Pleasure to see you again, Mrs. Scully," he said.

Thankfully William made a small cry, diffusing the uncomfortable moment. Mrs. Scully ran over to her grandchild. "Oh, William! You have gotten so big already!

Come to Grandma," she said picking him out of the stroller and going into the Apartment.

"I think it's best you two have some time alone to talk," Doggett whispered to Scully.

"Yeah, this was the last thing my mother expected to see," she said in agreement.

"I'll give you a call tonight," he said and turned to leave.

"Wait," she said wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him into a hungry, lingering kiss. "I just wanted you to know that I had a most wonderful time with you today."

"So did I," he said with a smile. They kissed again and he left.

Mrs. Scully sat down on the couch with the baby and played with him, enjoying every little expression that crossed his tiny angelic face. She was so thrilled to be a grandma again.

"So where is Fox ?" she asked as Scully finally walked into the Apartment. She decided not to ask about the scene she just witnessed.

Scully sighed audibly. "Gone," she said simply then searched through a pile of papers.

"On business?" she asked.

"No, gone forever," she said and handed her mother the letter Mulder had written. Doggett had brought it back from the lab just the other day.

Mrs. Scully read the letter and her heart ached for her daughter. She never imagined that Fox Mulder would abandon her. She was greatly disappointed in him. "Oh, Dana, I'm so sorry," she said, a tear spilling down her cheek.

"When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me?"

Scully sat next to her mother and hugged her. "I got the letter the day after William's birth," she said.

"No! How could he?" Mrs. Scully's anger was rising. "Oh, Dana, I should have been there for you!"

"It's okay, mom. John helped me. A lot. I honestly don't think I would have made it through this without him. He was there for William and me everyday since Mulder left. He cooked me dinners, tidied up my Apartment, and took care of William while I slept. He called me from work a couple times a day just to see if I was okay. He was there, mom! He was there! And I know he kept me from falling into a deep depression. Alone, having a newborn, Mulder leaving, it all would have driven me crazy if it weren't for John."

Mrs. Scully studied her daughter carefully. She saw the love in her eyes when she spoke about him. "I'm so glad he was there for you, Dana. He sounds like a wonderful man, a man not afraid of responsibly," she paused then added, "or of showing his feelings for you."

Scully blushed thinking back to the kiss her mother had witnessed. "He is a wonderful man. He is everything Mulder is not."

"Are you falling in love with him?" she asked hesitantly.

"Mom!" Scully exclaimed a bit embarrassed. She hadn't put it in so many words yet, but in her heart she knew that she loved John Doggett. "Yes," she said just above a whisper.

Mrs. Scully smiled. "If he treats you well, I like him. And from what I've heard, he sounds like a gem."

"That he is, Mom. That he is."

The days passed and Scully and Doggett were practically inseparable. They went on dates often, sometimes with William and sometimes without. Mrs. Scully was always happy to watch her grandson and she was thrilled to see her daughter so happy. That something so good had come out of something so bad was a sheer blessing. John Doggett was a blessing and Mrs. Scully liked him more and more each day.

Scully and Doggett had just finished a lovely dinner at an Italian restaurant and decided to take a walk in the cool night air. The stars twinkled in the black sky and the crickets chirped in harmony. They walked with arms wrapped tightly around each other's waists then stopped to watch a shooting star streak though the dark sky.

"Did you make a wish?" Scully asked, facing him.

Doggett smiled. "No need to. My wish has already come true," he said sincerely and covered her mouth with his in a romantic and passionate kiss. Breaking the kiss, he looked deep into her eyes. "I love you," he breathed.

Scully smiled radiantly, overjoyed at his declaration. "I love you too," she said and pulled him to her in a kiss that confirmed her words a million times over. Their bodies pressed together and their desire grew quickly.

"Maybe we should head back to your place, before some teen tell us to get a room," Doggett suggested between kisses.

Scully giggled at the memory. "Let's go."

They drove back to her place. Mrs. Scully informed them that William was fast asleep and seeing that they wanted to be alone, she made a quick exit. There was something different about them and they both glowed with happiness.

As soon as the door shut, Doggett and Scully were in each other's arms, drinking hungrily from each other. They peeled off each other's coats and tore off their shirts. The initial skin-to-skin contact was almost more than Scully could bear.

She moaned and her knees literally weakened, melting into his embrace. It had a similar effect on Doggett and his penis strained painfully against his suddenly confining pants. He ground himself into her belly while his lips and tongue danced across her neck leaving a fiery trail. He was about to unsnap her bra, when she gently pushed him away. In their frenzied passion, she had forgotten something.

"We have to wait," she said, her breath hot against his lips.

Reluctantly he released her and said, "I'm sorry. This is too fast for you. We should take this slow." He felt like a jerk for pushing her.

"No, it's not that. I want this, I am ready for this, but my body isn't. It's been only three weeks since William's birth and it is recommended that women wait until six weeks to make love," she explained, the disappointment apparent in her voice.

Doggett had forgotten all about that. "Of course! I'm so sorry, Dana, I didn't mean to push. You know I'll wait for you forever, if that's what it takes," he said with sincerity.

She smiled at the wonderful man before her. How she loved him! "We don't have to wait that long. The next three weeks will be hard enough!"

"It will just make it all the more special. I don't need to make love to you to show you how much I love you."

"No, you don't. You have already shown me in a hundred other ways," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "I love you, John Doggett."

They embraced then went over to the couch and laid down together. They cuddled, stoking each other's bare skin until they both feel asleep.

Although the next three weeks were busy, they seemed to move very slowly. Scully was counting the days until her six-week checkup. With each day their desire for each other mounted making even just a kiss become a need for a cold shower. Finally the day arrived and after her doctor's visit Scully went to the market buying all the ingredients for the dinner she was planning. She wanted to make this night extra special and wanted to show her thanks to Doggett for all he had done for her. She couldn't believe that this would actually be the first time she was cooking for him. William just kept her so busy and Doggett usually beat her to the task.

At 5:00 her mother came over to pick up William. She handed her the baby, his diaper bag and several bottles of milk she had pumped over the last few days. Scully had been a bit embarrassed to ask her mother to watch William for the night, but her mother was thrilled at the prospect of having the little guy all to herself and she thankfully hadn't asked why.

"It smells wonderful, Dana!" Her mother said referring to the dinner in the oven.

"Thanks, Mom. I hope he likes it!"

"I'm sure he will. I don't think there is anything about you that he wouldn't like. You two have a terrific time tonight and don't worry about William. We will have our own little party," she said.

"Thanks for doing this. I just want tonight to be really special."

"With a man like John, I'm sure it will be. He is a fine, honorable man, the type that will always put you first and keep you happy. Enjoy your date," she said with a knowing smile and left.

Scully scanned the room. The table was set, the lights were dimmed and everything looked in place. She had under an hour before she expected him to arrive. Quickly she went into the bathroom, showered, put on some makeup and jewelry, did her hair, and slithered into a sexy black dress that she had bought earlier that week. She looked at herself in the mirror and was pleased. Although she still had a little belly, her figure was returning more and more to its previous shape.

The kitchen timer rang and she ran to the oven and took out the meal. It looked perfect. Then she lit all the candles she had spread around the living and dining areas and put on some soft music.

At 6:00 on the dot, there was a knock at the door. Scully slowly walked over to it, trying to calm her rapidly beating heart. She was actually nervous with excitement. She opened the door to find an incredibly handsome John Doggett standing before her. He had dressed up and was wearing a finely tailored navy suit, a crisp white shirt, and a burgundypatterned tie. In his hands he held a bottle of wine and a dozen long-stemmed red roses.

His intense blue eyes sparkled with the vision he saw before him. Scully looked drop-dead gorgeous. She wore a sexy black dress that hugged her every curve. The plunging neckline revealed her enlarged, perfectly formed breasts, and her strappy black high-heeled sandals showed off her perfectly painted toes. The mere sight of her pumped desire through his veins and had he not been a gentleman, he would have taken her on the spot and ravished her.

"You look incredible, Dana!" He exclaimed approvingly.

"My, God, you are a gorgeous woman!"

Scully blushed instantly, lowering her eyes. She was not used to getting such compliments. "Thank you. You are looking incredibly handsome yourself," she said with a smile.

"For you," he said handing her the bottle and flowers.

"Thank you. They are beautiful!" she said happily, taking in the potent, sweet scent.

"Nothing compared to the beauty that is holding them," he said still in awe.

"John, stop it. You're embarrassing me. I'm not used to such compliments," she said walking to the kitchen. She laid the items on the counter then turned around surprised to find Doggett standing just inches away from her.

He swept her into his arms and kissed her with such fire and passion, she almost fainted from the intensity. Her mind went blank and her body dissolved in his embrace. Parting, he looked directly into her darkened eyes and said, "You better get used to such compliments, because I'm going to be telling you how incredibly beautiful you are to me every day." He sealed those words with another fervent kiss.

Her second kitchen timer went off, interrupting their tryst.

Reluctantly, they parted. "Dinner is ready. We better eat before it gets cold," she said. Then she gathered the roses and put them in a large vase.

"You mean we have to sit through a whole dinner before I get to hold you in my arms again?" he asked, holding her eyes in a profound gaze.

"Patience, John. I promise you it will be worth it," she said giving him a sexy smile.

Smiling back he said, "I have no doubt." He looked around the room. "Where's William?"

"He's spending the night at my mom's," she said with an alluring gaze.

"Oh, really?" His eyes flashed with lust and hope of what was to come.

Throughout dinner they gazed at each other, not able to look away for more than a few moments at a time. The sexual tension in the air was so think it was almost tangible.

Doggett watched her every movement: her delicate fingers holding her fork, her lips as they slide the food off the fork into her mouth, the rise and fall of the swell of her breasts as she breathed, and most of all the sparkle of her eyes each time they met his. His desire for her was overwhelming and he ate the entire meal in a highly aroused state.

He was having a similar effect on her. She studied every detail of his intensely masculine face then watched the movements of his hands as they worked the knife and fork.

She wondered what pleasure those hands would bring her and realized her panties were already wet in anticipation.

Besides Doggett complimenting her on how delicious the meal was, they spoke very little. Their minds were just too occupied with the beauty of the other sitting across from them. It was the most unique and intense foreplay Scully had ever experienced.

When they were finished eating, Doggett brought the dishes to the kitchen and walked back to Scully, who was still sitting at the table, watching him. He kneeled down before her, taking her hands in his. "Dana, I love you more than anything on this Earth and if you say 'yes', I promise to love William as much my own flesh and blood. Nothing would make me happier than for the three of us to be a family. Will you marry me, Dana Scully?" His eyes searched hers in breathless anticipation.

Scully's eyes were glistening with unshed tears, she was so moved by his proposal. She loved this man with all her being and knew her answer absolutely. "Yes, John, oh yes!" She exclaimed in bliss. "I love you," she managed to croak out before her emotions rendered her speechless. She fell into his awaiting arms and they kissed tenderly.

"This is for you," he said taking an engagement ring off of his pinky and slipping it onto the fourth finger of her left hand.

"I hope you like it."

Scully stared down at the gorgeous ring on her finger. It was a Tiffany-set brilliant set in high-polished platinum. She couldn't believe the size of the stone; it had to be close to two carats. She had never seen such a beautiful ring in her life!

"Oh, yes, I like it! It is absolutely gorgeous!" she exclaimed in excitement.

"It signifies my unwavering and undying love for you. When you look at it, I want you to always remember that I will be there for you and love you no matter what life throws our way. I commit myself to you in every way."

"Oh, John!" Scully was crying in pure joy. "How did I ever get so lucky to have you love me? You are the most generous, loving, honest, and honorable man I have ever met.

And I KNOW you will always be there for me. You already have proven that on a daily basis. I love you more that I could ever put into words."

He captured her mouth with his and their kiss conveyed everything that words could not. The kiss that started out tender and sweet quickly exploded into one of powerful desire. She tore at his tie, impatient with the knot, then ripped his shirt off his body. Buttons flew everywhere.

Finally her hands touched what they yearned to feel and her fingers glided over his cut chest and arms. Her nostrils filled with his delicious masculine scent and she swooned with lust.

Doggett unzipped the back of her dress and she pulled it to her waist, then standing up it fell the rest of the way down to the floor. In an instant he was on his feet as well, working the clasp of her bra while Scully worked on ridding him of his pants. Both articles of clothing flew off seconds later as did their shoes. Doggett scooped Scully into his strong arms and carried her to the bed, laying her down gently, then swept off her already soaked panties in one motion.

"God, you are beautiful," he breathed taking in the sight before him.

Quickly he pulled off his tenting boxers and covered her body with his. The complete skin-to-skin contact made every nerve-ending buzz with electricity. Doggett buried his face in her neck, nipping it with his lips and teeth. Then he ran his scorching tongue down the length of it, leaving a fiery trail.

His tongue continued to travel down, searing the sensitive flesh beneath it until it reached her breast. Scully moaned in pleasure as his tongue encircled her nipple. His tongue and lips worked it expertly, trading off between the two breasts.

The pleasure was so exquisite, Scully's center gushed with wetness, as her fingers wildly tangled through his hair. He continued his decent down her sweltering body until he reached her core. Parting her legs he breathed in her delicate scent. It intoxicated him and his groin tightened even more in arousal. His tongue ran over her already glistening lips and folds drawing guttural moans from Scully. He paid special attention to her swollen clit then plunged the length of his tongue deep into her steaming center, meticulously moving it in and out and over her clit until her whole body trembled.

He continued as her thighs clenched around him and her body writhed in ecstasy. She came fiercely and he drank her sweet juices with hunger.

She couldn't believe she had come so quickly and exquisitely!

Doggett was an expert lover and his love for her was evident with every touch. Her body quivering, she pulled him up by his face and drew him into a lustful, greedy kiss. She tasted herself on his tongue and lips and ground her body into his with uninhibited fervor. He was rock-hard against her and she grabbed him in her hand stroking him firmly. It was Doggett's turn to moan and he pulled her mouth even more into his, kissing her wildly. She tore herself away from him, but he captured her again possessively trying to satiate his extreme hunger for her. She surrendered, matching his fierceness then broke the kiss again, sinking onto her intended target.

He let out a feral groan as she took his throbbing manhood completely into her burning mouth in one clean motion. The pleasure was exquisite and it took all of Doggett's strength not to come right then and there. She moved her tongue and lips over him, extracting a string of low moans. When she thought he was close, she straddled him and slowly lowered herself onto his iron-hard cock. She whimpered in sheer pleasure as her body expanded to accommodate his largeness. The sensation was intoxicating to them both and they had to stay still for a moment just to regain some control. Then Scully rode him, slowly at first and then building up to a frenzied pace. Suddenly Doggett flipped them over, so that Scully lay beneath him. He plunged into her, going deeper with each thrust and their rhythm became wild and needy. Scully cried out as wave upon wave of intense pleasure coursed though her body. She dug her fingers into his muscular back as her body continued to reverberate in ecstasy. With one final thrust he came violently as well, growling at the exhilarating sensation.

Panting, he laid himself gently on her, careful not to put his entire weight on her body.

Their bodies were glistening with sweat and Doggett moved a stand of hair out of Scully's eyes. Looking deeply into them, he breathed, "I love you, Dana."

She smiled radiantly. "I love you too."

His deflated penis slipped out of her and she whimpered at the loss. He rolled on his back and encircled her in his arms.

"What would you think of an encore in, say, about twenty minutes?" he asked grinning.

She smiled wickedly. "You read my mind."

They snuggled together in complete peace. Their life as one was just beginning and it was going to be good.
