Title: In My Last Moments Summary: Mulder and Scully's daughter finds out about her father. Author's Notes: This was originally a to be submitted to the COX FanFic Challenge but it took to long and now is a stand alone. October 14th, 2000 "It has been six months since Mulder was taken. He can't be gone. I try to believe Skinner, Mulder went willingly, but he left me. He left us, his child, he left his child. What would compel a man to do that? Is the truth more valuable than me, is Samantha more important than our child. Our baby girl was born yesterday, Mulder's birthday. I have decided to name her Crevan Alethea Scully, which means Fox Truth Scully. I think that she embodies all that she is, she will have to be my Mulder and my truth until her father returns." May 20th, 2016 "Today is the day. Exactly 16 years ago today Mulder was taken from me. He left me, and he also left Crevan. I hate him for that, making Samantha such a focus in his life, he lived in the past while I was there for him the in the present. He may have felt guilt about my cancer, my infertility, and even my lack family, but he had no right to change that." Dana set down her journal on her queen-sized bed. She was nearing the end of this journal, the one her mother had given her as a gift when Crevan was born. She had been writing in it consistently since then, it was filled with her joy with her daughter, and her frustration of her daughter's father. She flipped through the pages reliving the sixteen years of emotions that were penned into that book. The tone of the writing had changed somewhat after meeting Ethan Cooke. He was wonderful to both her and Crevan. He had joined their little family and had made it a bigger family with his two children, twins, Liam and Aidan who were two years older than Crevan. She and Ethan had met at a spousal grief meeting; his wife had just passed away from brain cancer. Although Dana (or Scully in this case) and Mulder were never married she still considered him her spouse. Her past thirteen years with Ethan have been wonderful but she still missed Mulder, and also the F.B.I., which she had left after Mulder's disappearance and Crevan's birth. Teaching had its wonderful benefits but the X-Files were a part of her soul that was difficult to part with. Ethan is a successful trader on Wall Street and so they moved their families to a nice house with a nice yard with a nice white picket fence. Liam, Aidan and Crevan played to their hearts content in that wonderful back yard but recently it had been quite silent. Crevan was to celebrating her Sweet Sixteen in the fall and the boys had been initiated into adulthood at their 18th birthday parties not even two months ago. In the fall they would be heading off two Harvard to study pre-law for Aidan and Princeton and pre-med for Liam. It was going to be quiet, but Dana could always keep herself busy at Columbia, lecturing and helping students in pathology. She and Ethan had kept the fact that she had been an F.B.I. Agent fairly quiet. To prevent her from some of the men who had wanted to kill her and also to protect their children. Dana still would hear from her former boss, AD Walter Skinner, but the kids just thought of him as an uncle. The Lone Gunmen sent Christmas cards with pictures of their significant others, Frohike would make pictures and add her while Byers would show off his wife and kids and Langly had a different girlfriend every Christmas. "Mom, mom," a voice cut off her thoughts, "Mom, dad's on the phone." "Okay honey I'm on the way." Dana responded to her daughter. "Hi honey, what's up? Your going to be home late. It's okay. I will be sure to leave some out for you. Bye, I love you." "So dad's coming home late?" Inquired Crevan. "Yes he is, and I am to leave some dinner out for him," Dana replied. "Mom, what is going on today? You have been looking sad all day and you have been looking through that journal for the past three hours. What is so special about today?" Dana's head started to spin, Crevan was blessed with her father's expressive face, but thankfully her mother's nose, but today that look of a puppy dog she had seen on Mulder was just too much. "Well, today is the anniversary of a very special person who was very close to me. I haven't seen them in a very long time and I miss them." Dana was on the verge of tears; she was worried that she had betrayed her cool exterior. "Was it my father, was he the bastard who left you and makes you feel like that?" Crevan broke through Dana's thoughts. "Your father was not a bastard, he was a good man who made a bad choice. He chose to chase the past instead of pursuing the future." Dana finally broke down and started to cry. Crevan was watching her mother very intently waiting for the perfect moment to speak to her. That moment came at a lull in Dana's sobs. "Do you think that it is finally time to tell me who my real dad is and why he isn't here anymore." Dana stared at her daughter intently, contemplating telling her the strange tale of Fox Mulder and the X-Files. The look in Crevan's eyes told Dana that this may be the time to tell her about the man who meant more to her than anything imaginable. Dana's mind was made up, she was going to tell her daughter about the life her mother lead and about the father she never knew. "Okay Cre," Dana let out a sigh of relief, "It is time, I will tell you about your natural father but you must bear with me. I am going to be reliving the most emotional days of my life. Well it all started one day in March of 1992 when I was assigned to a little known project within the FBI, the X-Files, with Fox Mulder or Spooky Mulder as everyone the Academy knew him. An Oxford educated psychologist who worked as a profiler for the Violent Crimes Unit, stumbled upon the X-Files which were unexplained cases that had been filed away. It turns out that there were some big secrets that the Government did not want discovered and so they sent me to debunk him. I valued my integrity and did not do as 'they' instructed and we became the partners with the best solve rate in the Bureau and best friends." For nearly two hours Dana went over the life of the life of Fox Mulder with her daughter. Everything from Deep Throat to the Gunmen, Skinner to Alex Krycek, and her abduction, cancer and infertility, Samantha's abduction, Melissa's death and also C.G.B. Spender, the bastard who had made her suffer through all of those hardships. "In February, 2000 the Smoking Man was dying. After all he had done he still had one more trick up his sleeve. He convinced me to go along with him to see a woman he claimed was 118 years old. Somehow during that trip he drugged me and when I woke up I was in silk pajamas on a couch at a cottage. At that time I did not know what he had done. He had given you to me. A few months later we got word that an alien ship had crashed in Bellefleur, Oregon. This was where my first X-File had been 7 years earlier. Well I had not been feeling well and Mulder sent be back to D.C., if I had know what was going to happen I would have never left. Mulder tracked down the ship and he and Skinner went to investigate and somehow Mulder was taken by that ship. When Skinner returned to D.C. and told me what happened I had just found out about you. I worked with John Doggett for a few months before you were born, but after your birth I couldn't rationalize putting you in danger. Not the danger of losing me in the line of duty but putting you in danger from Krycek, Marita, and the CSM and the consortium in general." Dana sat quietly for a moment reflecting on her thoughts and composing her next words. Crevan cut through her reverie. "So that's why my name means Fox. It all makes sense now." "Actually you are named Crevan for Fox Mulder, but also Aletha for the Truth. The basis of my partnership with Mulder was that of truth." "Thank you Mom, thank you for finally telling me. I wonder where he is right now." "I don't want to think about what they did up there to him. I just hope that he was happy with the decision that he made. Because if he isn't happy then it is all his own fault. He left us for Samantha and I have always resented him for that." October 13th, 2024 It was Crevan Cooke's 24th birthday as a 4th year med student she had somehow ended up working the ER that day. Just her luck that she had pulled the 3pm-12am shift. Her friends at the hospital had thrown her a little surprise party but little did they know that the biggest surprise of Crevan's life was going happen that evening. She had a few minutes off to relax in the lounge. She had gone to Princeton, Liam's alma matter, for pre-med but had headed for Georgetown to go to med school. The George Washington University Hospital was a good one, she had learned lots of the past two years there. Her mother had called the week before wondering if Crevan had the day off so Dana could come down for a birthday day out. Just as it always seems, just as she was about to doze off the ER became alive. It was 10:30 pm and her shift was near being over but then one of the nurses came looking for her. She rushed out to see a 50ish Caucasian male be wheeled in, he had thick dark brown hair and hazel eyes and a nose that was just a bit to large. He tried to push aside the gas mask when he saw Crevan. She was talking to him to make him realize that he needed the mask. "Hi, my name is Dr. Cooke and you need that mask. It's helping you breathe and keep you alive. Let's get you into a room so I can take a look at you." She hadn't been listening to the EMT but she noticed the problem quite quickly. There was a bullet wound that went clean through his right shoulder. Upon examination she noticed that there was a very old bullet wound on his left shoulder that was nearly identical to the one on his right. "Pat, what is his name? Did he have any ID on him?" "All we got is a name, one George E. Hale. Age 59. You okay Crevan, you don't look so well?" "It's okay Pat I will be feeling better after I sleep. I need you to call Rice and Fung in here for a surgical consult." Crevan and the other nurse, Carla, did all they could until the surgeons showed up. Suddenly the man started to make noise, he was repeating a name over and over again. She went close to him to make out what he was saying. He looked her straight into her eyes which were the same shade of hazel as his, and he reached up to touch her auburn hair, the same shade as her mother. He said one word, Scully. That was it he turned his face back up to the ceiling and screamed it, Scully, Scully, Scully. He only stopped when he could not breathe. At that moment Crevan realized something, she had to call her mother. "Pat, do you think that you can grab Reed and take control I need to make a call. I will explain later." With that she took off towards the phone on the other side of the room and without another thought dialed her mother's work number. "Dana Cooke's Office, she is currently teaching can I take your message." It was Cindy Jules, her mom's secretary. "Cindy, its Crevan. You need to get her out of class. I think I found Mulder, my dad I think I found him." Suddenly there was not a presence on the other end of the line as Cindy took off towards the classroom. The next thing Crevan knew was that her mother was on the line. "Cre, honey, what are you talking about." "Mom, a man was just admitted, he is 6'1'' with brown hair and hazel eyes the same shade as mine. When he saw me he reached out and touched my hair and started saying 'scully, Scully, Scully' over and over and over again. He has a bullet wound scar on his left shoulder it looks fairly old. He was using the name George E. Hale, and hold on a sec. It turns out that he has some sort of implant in the back of his neck." All that Crevan could hear was breathing. All that Dana could hear was panting. For what seemed like an eternity they just breathed. "Cre, from what you just told me it seems that, Mulder is right there. Is there any way for me to talk to him." Crevan put her mother on speakerphone so that she could speak to Mr. Hale. Suddenly her mother's voice cut through the air, as if she was directing her voice to only the man on the table. "Is that you Mulder? It's Scully, its Dana Scully. And that wonderful girl there Crevan Cooke is you daughter Mulder. You never knew about her but she was my blessing after you were taken. I hope your pursuit of Sam made you happy, but she has made me so very happy over the years. Its her birthday today, you two share a birthday. I love you Fox, I always have and I always will. Crevan is so much like you, I even named her after you, Crevan means Fox. Her middle name is Alethea means Truth, her face even makes the same puppy-dog expression that yours does. She is a Mulder, her name may take after another man but she is a true Mulder." The only thing that he could say was, "I'm sorry Scully." With that his heart stopped. A small, child like voice that seemed to rise out of Crevan's throat said, "I love you, Dad." The walls of the small room in the hospital seemed to ring with the response, "I love you Crevan." Attempts to resuscitate Mr. Hale were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 11:21pm. It was ruled a suicide due to the nature of the gunshot wound. There was no family at the funeral but the whole Cooke Family made sure that he was given a hero's burial under the name Fox Mulder. His tombstone read "Fox Mulder: Loving Father and Brother." May 20th, 2025 Crevan Cooke's Journal "Since my father's death on my birthday I have been investigating his life after he was abducted. I turns out that he was returned in October of 2001 under an assumed identity. George E. Hale was a simple man who lived in D.C. in a small apartment with a small amount of money that was untraceable. He was quite unremarkable; he had some drinking buddies and a cat that everyone called Spooky. It seems that after Fox Mulder's abduction the vibrant man that my mother knew disappeared and a nobody was returned in his place. I hope that he can rest in peace and is happy wherever he is now." The End Epilogue: Fox Mulder watched, he had been doing a lot of watching in the past four years. He had been keeping his eye on Crevan since he had been returned, but since she had been in D.C. he watched her on a regular basis. When he had been taken so many years ago he had been subjected to many different torture devices that by the end he was numbed to the pain but when he was returned the pain was much worse. He had been returned to the Smoking Bastard who had given him a choice that was so painful to choose between that he nearly broke down deciding. He had to make a choice for Dana. She could only have one or the other, him or their child. He chose to leave Dana so that she could keep her daughter. The Smoking Man supplied him with enough money to keep him alive and not needing to work but not enough to allow him any freedoms. In his last moments he had met her. He had met his daughter. She was perfect, a perfect combination of Scully and Mulder genetics. In his last moments he had heard Scully say the words that he had always meant to say, 'I love you'. In his last moments he had said 'I love you'. In his last moments... Well thats all folks. Any feedback (please no flames) would be a wonderful thing send it to DestructionsFlame@yahoo.com
