Chapter 1

Scully stands in the dark motel room in Roswell, New Mexico. It is still raining. She looks out of the window into the dark night thoughtfully. Mulder is asleep in the bed behind her. Thoughts about William are racing through Scully's head. She closes her eyes, she swallows, tries to think of something else, but she can't. As she opens her eyes again tears begin to stream down her face. Mulder sits up in the bed. He sees her standing at the window and approaches her slowly.

"You okay, Scully?" he asks while placing his hand on her shoulder.

She turns to him; he can see she's crying.

"I didn't mean to wake you," she whispers.

Mulder doesn't answer; he wipes away her tears, kisses her on the forehead and embraces her. They stand there silently for a few minutes.

"You were thinking about William, weren't you?" Mulder softly whispers into Scully's hair. She nods slightly.

"You didn't have a choice."

"I thought about the night I made the decision to..." she starts sobbing again.

"Shh, it's okay." Mulder gently strokes her head.

"I just can't seem to get these pictures out of my head, you know," she pauses "Agent Spender injecting this unknown substance into my child's body and me watching, unable to do anything. And then, when I questioned Spender... I asked him why he did all this. And he said, he said that he was protecting William. That he made him useless for their colonization plans." Scully shakes her head softly.

"I felt useless then, because I wasn't able to protect my own child..."

"You did not have a choice, Scully. You did the right thing," Mulder whispers.

"I gave him up because I wanted him to be safe. If he's useless, is he safe?"

"I don't know. We know the truth, maybe we can find a way to change it. Cancerman knew a way, you heard him. The answer has to be in Virginia." Scully looks up.

"You're not planning to go back there, are you?"

"I have to find the answers, Scully."

"Mulder... You cannot return there. These people might still be searching for us!"

"That only proves that I'm onto something important."

"Mulder..."

"Scully, I've been hiding for a year. I don't want to hide anymore.

There is a way to stop the colonization and I will find it."

Mulder sounds more determined than ever. Scully looks into his eyes, she can see that there's no way for her to make him change his mind.

She knows she'll follow him anyway.

Chapter 2

Doggett and Reyes are sitting in a bar in Washington D.C. Both are drinking a beer. They are the only guests at this late hour.

"Do you think they made it, John," Reyes asks. She looks very worried.

"I bet they did. I wonder what will happen to us now. If Gibson Praise is right the men behind all this know exactly who helped Mulder escape. And I doubt that they will let us get away with it."

Doggett is very concerned too.

The door of the bar opens. Skinner walks in, Gibson Praise enters behind him. They sit down next to Reyes and Doggett.

"Gibson was right," Skinner says, resignation in his voice, "They know we helped them."

"So we're all in danger?" Reyes asks.

"I don't know. We're watched closely, though," Skinner answers.

"They know who helped him. But they don't know if you know the truth," Gibson says. He sounds sad as well. "They will watch you but you are the smallest problem they have."

"What's their big problem then?" Reyes asks sounding a bit confused.

"Your partner knows." Gibson looks at Doggett, who looks down to his beer bottle.

"John?"

"They don't know for sure... They don't know if Mulder and Scully are still alive... They have to get rid of them first." Doggett is clearly concerned.

"Right, and they still don't know why those rocks kill their Super Soldiers."

"Do you know the truth, Gibson," Skinner asks suddenly.

"I do. I cannot tell you. You'd become a bigger problem for them."

"So you are in great danger, too. You have to get away from here," Reyes realizes. "We won't be able to protect you if we're watched by them."

"Monica is right. You have to leave now." Doggett finishes his beer and stands. "The sooner the better."

"I know how to escape Agent Doggett. I've planned it."

The door opens again. It's the Indian boy who came to Doggett's house before. Gibson gets up and leaves.

"What are we going to do now?" Doggett asks.

"Nothing. They know we helped Mulder, but they don't know that we know," Skinner answers and takes another sip of his beer.

"Nor do they know that we're aware we're being watched," Doggett adds.

"Right. But we can't just go back to business as usual, can we? At least we have to search for Scully and Mulder." Reyes looks at both men.

Chapter 3

The next morning. Scully sits in the passenger seat of the SUV they escaped with from the Anasazi Pueblos. The car is parked in front of the motel. Mulder is getting in the driver's seat. He starts the engine.

"Where are we going?" Scully asks. She is still skeptic about Mulder's plan. "We cannot return to Virginia now. They will have moved those files to another place anyway."

"I'm aware of that. We're not headed for Virginia yet."

"Where are going then?"

"There are a few things I need to take with me... files that I kept in my hideaway during the last year. Information on the men behind this. Proof of all we worked for those last nine years."

They are now driving down a rural road somewhere in New Mexico.

Suddenly Mulder stops the car.

"This is where you hit the last year?" Scully looks around but she sees nothing.

"No, this is where I kept the files, the proof." Mulder answers and walks away from the car. He watches his steps carefully, then he kneels down and opens a small trapdoor hidden in the grass.

He proudly carries an old box back to the car and places it on the hood. Scully looks at the box skeptically and opens it. She takes some photos out of it. One shows a happy family picnic. Two children, a boy and a girl, are smiling into the camera. Their parents are sitting in the background. Scully recognizes Cassandra Spender and Cancerman immediately. She turns toward Mulder.

"That's...."

"That's a photo showing better days." He interrupts her. "There are also some scientific reports you might want to take a look at later." He takes the box from the hood and places it on the backseat.

Scully and Mulder get back in the car and drive away.

Chapter 4

Skinner's office. Skinner sits at his desk. Reyes and Doggett sit on armchairs. They don't know what to do and seem to be scared to do something wrong as they might be watched.

Suddenly the phone rings. Skinner answers. "Assistant Director Skinner."

"Hello." a woman is on the other end of the line. She sounds confused and frightened. "I'd like to speak to Dana Scully."

"I'm sorry, Agent Scully is not here." Skinner looks at Doggett and Reyes. He's surprised. "How did you get this number?"

Doggett and Reyes pick up another phone.

"I talked to someone in Quantico who told me she might be here," the woman says.

"We don't know where Agent Scully is at the moment," Skinner says.

"Maybe we can help you. What's your name?"

"No, I need to talk to Agent Scully. I won't talk to anyone else."

The woman sounds very frightened now. "I cannot tell you who I am. Not on the phone anyway."

"We're trying to find Agent Scully, too. Maybe you can help us find her," Skinner answers. Meanwhile Doggett is having the call traced.

"I cannot talk to you about it on the phone. I'm in danger," the woman whispers into the phone.

"Where are you?" We would like to meet you. We can protect you," Skinner says calmly.

"We can't meet. I need to talk to Agent Scully."

"About what?" Skinner's patience is tried.

"About her son." the woman hangs up before Skinner can answer. They look at each other. Doggett writes something down.

"She called from a motel in Virginia. Let's go." Doggett grabs his coat and leaves. Reyes follows him.

Chapter 5

A car is parked outside a gas station. Scully is sitting in the passenger seat. They have changed the car. Scully is reading some of the files from Mulder's box. Mulder comes out of the gas station he's

carrying drinks and a bag of sunflower seeds. He gets in the car and hands Scully a drinks.

"Thank you." she takes a sip. "This is a report on these substances killing the Super Soldiers. Who ever wrote this is not sure about what it is. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this."

"I know, I read it myself." Mulder smiles and offers her some sunflower seeds. Scully shakes her head. Mulder starts the car and pulls back on the street.

"Mulder, where are we going now?"

"Kersh was right. We have to get out of the country. We have to get those files out of the country, too."

"So we're headed where? Mexico?" Scully asks skeptically.

"Si." Mulder looks at her. "And then we're going to find out how to change the truth." He looks to the box on the backseat. Scully looks down then she looks at Mulder.

"What if we can't change it? What if we're not fast enough?"

"Don't think about that, Scully. No one believed I was going to find the truth either. And I did. Trust me, Scully."

"I do trust you, but..." She doesn't know how to say it "...it's just...Mulder, if we don't... I mean the final colonization could begin in ten years. This could be our last chance to finally lead a normal life."

"I can't. I wish I could. I've been dreaming about a normal life after I know the truth since god knows when. But I can't just go on now like nothing happened. I have to try. Don't you understand?"

Scully looks away. She's worried.

Chapter 6

Doggett and Reyes have arrived at the motel the woman called from.

Apart from their car there is only one other car in the parking lot.

Reyes waits at the parking lot while Doggett walks to the office.

Reyes watches him leave then she suddenly sees a curtain move in one of the motel rooms.

"John." Reyes calls after Doggett. He turns around. "In there." Reyes points towards the suspicious room. They slowly approach the room.

"Hallo? My name is Monica Reyes. I believe we talked on the phone this morning." Reyes knocks but no one is answering.

"Ma'am please, open the door. We're going to help you," Doggett says.

"You cannot help me!" the woman screams from the inside. Reyes and Doggett look at each other. Doggett looks at the door then at Reyes again. Reyes nods and draws her gun. Doggett kicks in the door.

They find the woman hiding in the bathroom, she looks scared. She has been crying and she has several bruises. Reyes approaches her and kneels down beside her.

"It's all right now. We're here to help you," Reyes tries to comfort the woman.

Suddenly they hear cars coming closer.

"They are coming! You lead them to me. They're going to kill me," the woman screams.

"Who is coming?" Reyes asks. Doggett is looking out of the window.

"I don't know, but she's right. We got to get out of here!" He sees several men leaving the cars and surrounding the motel. They leave the motel room. Doggett has his gun drawn while Reyes tries to protect the woman.

As they run toward their car Doggett fires at the tires of the other car and at the men aiming their guns at them.

"Get into the damn car. Now!" he screams at Reyes who is holding the terrified woman. She pushes the woman in the backseat and jumps in the driver's seat. As Doggett gets in the passenger seat she starts the engine and speeds away.

After they are sure that they haven't been followed they return to the X-Files office.

"Okay, I think we have proven that we can help you. Could you tell us now who you are?" Doggett asks. The woman is still very frightened.

She can barely speak. "I... My name is Laura Van de Kamp. We, my husband and I, we've...adopted Agent Scully's son William."

Reyes and Doggett stare at her in shock. They cannot believe what they've just heard. Doggett picks up the phone and calls Skinner.

Chapter 7

Mulder and Scully have arrived in Mexico. They are in a cheap looking hotel room. The whole table and part of the floor are covert with the files Mulder kept the last year. Scully is sitting on the bed. She is reading one of those files. Mulder sits on a chair and looks at some photos.

"Mulder, this is interesting." Scully stops reading and looks at Mulder. He gets up and sits on the bed next to her.

"The report on the metal killing those Super Soldiers again?"

"Yes. They did every test possible. They were thorough. I think I saw something similar before."

"You saw one of them die in a quarry yourself. Those results should be similar to those of the tests you did yourself back then." Mulder isn't surprised.

"They do, but they look similar to something else. I wonder why I haven't made this connection before..." suddenly she looks sad.

"What connection?" Mulder is curious.

"It seems to be... it looks like the magnetite... the magnetite Spender injected into William." She swallows. "It's the same, only this time the concentration is much higher."

Mulder looks at her. "Well, what does that mean?"

"I don't know for sure. Maybe Spender thought that William is a Super Soldier and... and tried to kill him. He might have used a lower dose to because he couldn't get more of the metal. But he told me that he would make William useless for the alien colonization plans." Scully sounds confused.

"Maybe this injection made it impossible for William to become Super Soldier."

"Like some kind of vaccine?" Scully is looking at Mulder skeptically.

"Yes. But if it actually kills these Super Soldiers it's much more than just a vaccine. It's a weapon. A way to change everything."

Mulder's hope has finally returned.

"Well, even if it is. We don't know how to get it." Scully still isn't sure about this.

"We don't. But Spender does."

"Mulder, you don't want to..."

"I have to find him, Dana. He has to help us. He's probably the only one who can." Mulder interrupts, "This metal is the answer to the destruction of these Super Soldiers. It's their kryptonite!"

Chapter 8

Reyes and Doggett have taken Mrs. Van de Kamp to a secure place.

"So you have adopted William. But where is he?" Doggett finally asks.

"I... They... They've taken him. They killed my husband and now they try to kill me."

"Wait. Calm down. Tell us exactly what happened. Right from the beginning," Reyes says and puts her hand on Mrs. Van de Kamp's shoulder.

"It happened a week ago. I..." she takes a deep breath. "I was preparing the dinner and my husband, Rob, was in the living room together with William." she has to stop talking again. "Suddenly I heard a car coming down the road. There aren't many cars passing by our house at that late hour so I asked Rob to check who it is. And then... then I heared several shots... and I... saw Rob lying on the floor.

His shirt was soaked in blood. He looked at one of the man... and then I saw that the man was carrying William!" She starts to sob. "I wanted to help him, to fight for him, but I knew I couldn't fight them... then I just started running. I ran as fast as I could... They followed me, but they lost my trace somewhere in the woods... Later I returned to where my house once was. They burned everything down... I went to the adoption agency to find out more about William... about his past... about his mother. But they wouldn't tell me anything."

She pauses, "Then I finally found someone who told me that her name was Dana Scully and that she's from Washington. I found out where she lived and I went there, but no one was home. I came back the day after and a neighbor told me that she was with the FBI. I believe you know the rest of the story." Laura Van de Kamp seems to be less frightened now. "Can you tell me something about my son... anything? Agent Reyes, Agent Doggett. I need to know why those men took him, why they killed Rob!"

"We want to know why he was taken, too. And we need to know who took him as well," Doggett says calmly.

"Yes. But why him? There has to be something. Why did Agent Scully give him away? Did she know that this would happen?"

"Well, she was afraid that something might happen to him, that she could not protect him if something happened. She thought he'd be save with you. It was very hard for her," Reyes says looking at her.

"Why was she afraid? Please tell me, I need to know the truth!" Mrs. Van de Kamp sounds angry now. She looks at Reyes then she turns to Doggett. Finally she faces Reyes again. Reyes looks into her eyes and sees nothing but desperation.

"Okay, I'll tell you, but it is a long story - and it's hard to believe," she says.

Chapter 9

It's early morning. Scully is asleep in the hotel room in Mexico. She wakes up as Mulder bursts in.

"Dana? Wake up." he softly shakes her shoulder. She looks at him in confusion.

"Mulder... What is it? Has something happened?"

"Get up. We have to leave... now."

"We have to leave? Why?" Scully is still sleepy.

"I just got of the phone with Skinner. I thought he knew where we can find Spender. Turns out I was right." He starts packing up the files.

"You called Skinner? Why? That might lead them right to us!" Scully is awake suddenly and begins dressing quickly.

"Skinner said that they know who helped us escape. But they have the same problem we always had - they have no proof. They're not even sure whether or not we survived the bombing at the pueblos."

"Well, now they know we're alive!" Scully sounds a bit angry.

"That's why we have to leave quickly." Mulder has finished packing up the files.

"Anyway we have an appointment with Skinner and Spender," he says.

"Appointment? Where?" Scully hurries now.

"JFK Airport, New York." He smiles at her. "Our flight leaves in about an hour."

He takes his coat and the box with the files and holds the door open for Scully. They step outside.

"You want to take the files with you?" Scully asks him.

"No, we'll leave them in Mexico. They're safer here."

"Mulder... There is something you haven't told me yet, isn't there?" Scully looks him directly in the eyes. Mulder sighs and looks down.

"Agents Reyes and Doggett met a woman yesterday." he looks up again.

"A woman?"

"She claims that... that she is the woman who adopted..."

"William!" Scully interrupts "Where is he? Is he okay?"

"That's the problem. No one can answer that question at the moment."

Mulder looks into Scully's eyes, they fill with tears. "He's been abducted," he says softly. They stand in the hallway for a moment. Then Scully wipes away the tears.

"Hurry, we have to go. We have to meet Skinner," she says and walks down the stairs. Mulder follows her.

Chapter 10

Reyes has just finished her story about William. Laura Van de Kamp stares at her in disbelief.

"That cannot be the truth." she shakes her "Agent Scully was abducted by aliens and left barren and yet she got pregnant somehow and nobody knows why?"

"I told you it was hard to believe." Reyes smiles at her "I couldn't believe it myself at first, but I saw it myself."

"But... the doctors told me that he was okay. There've been medical tests."

"I know. We believe he was normal when you adopted him."

"I... I cannot believe this." Mrs. Van de Kamp still shakes her head.

Suddenly the phone rings. Doggett answers it.

"Doggett."

"Agent Doggett?" Doggett recognizes Skinner's voice on the other end of the line.

"Yes, Sir."

"Where are you?"

"I'm in the office with Agent Reyes and Mrs. Van de Kamp." he takes a look around as if to make sure that there really isn't someone else.

"Good. I need you to meet me. Bring Mrs Van de Kamp, too."

"Okay where are you?"

"I'm on my way do JFK Airport."

"What do you want in New York?" Doggett sounds surprised.

"I'm going to meet Mulder and Scully."

"You know where they are?" Reyes looks at Doggett as she hears him speak.

"Mulder contacted me. I'm going to bring them to a save place. Agent Spender is waiting there for us. I'll give you the exact location."

Doggett gets a pen and starts writing something down. Then he hangs up.

"Who was this?" Reyes asks.

"Assistant Director Skinner."

"And does he..." Doggett does not let her finish the question.

"Yes. He only said that Mulder contacted him. He's going to meet them at JFK Airport... and he gave me this location, where we're going to meet them and Agent Spender." Doggett waves the paper in front of Reyes.

"Why Spender?" Reyes asks.

"I don't know."

"I don't care about that man, Spender, are we meeting Agent Scully?"

Mrs Van de Kamp sounds excited. "Yes. Come on. We got to go."

Doggett leaves the office, Reyes and Laura Van de Kamp follow him.

Chapter 11

JFK Airport, New York. Mulder and Scully have just left the plane.

While Mulder is checking whether they have been followed Scully tries to find Skinner. Skinner is searching for them as well. He sees them and waves.

"Agents, good to see you again" he says as they approach him.

"Good to see you, Skinman." Mulder jokes.

"Where is Spender?" Scully is clearly not in the mood for small talk.

"He's hiding in a save house. We'll go there now. I don't want you to be seen too often."

"Will she..." Scully is searching for the right words.

"Yes, Mrs. Van de Kamp will be there, too. She's with Doggett and Reyes. They're going to the house as well." Skinner looks at Scully who looks concerned.

"Have you spoken to Spender again." Mulder changes the subject.

"I only told him that we're going to visit him. That you two need a hiding place."

"Great, we're going to be roommates!" Mulder smiles. Scully gives him a look.

"Have you been followed?" Skinner asks as they leave the airport and enter his car.

"I don't think so." Mulder looks around to reassure himself that he's telling the truth.

"Good."

They get in the car and Skinner pulls out of the parking lot. They don't speak for a while.

"Have you met Mrs. Van de Kamp yet?" Scully asks.

"No I haven't. She's been with Doggett and Reyes the whole time," Skinner answers.

Then they arrive at a house somewhere in the woods. Only a small dirt road leads to it. The perfect hiding place.

Skinner knocks on the door.

"Spender? Open up. It's me." he calls. They hear a muffled noise from inside the house. Jeffrey Spender opens the door slowly and lets them in.

"Agent Scully, Agent Mulder. I'm glad you got here unharmed. Did you have any trouble?" he asks.

"No." Mulder answers shortly. No time for small talk.

"Now, I need you to tell me something, Jeffrey." Mulder looks at Spender.

"What?"

"Why did you inject this metal into William? And where did you get it."

"That's the true reason you're here, isn't it? Well, as I've already told you..." he says and takes a look at Scully, "I only wanted to protect him. He is a normal boy now, useless for their plans."

"Then why was he abducted?" Scully's voice shakes because of desperation, anger and frustration.

"He's been... I didn't know. I swear I didn't." Spender looks shocked.

"This metal you gave him, was that some kind of vaccine?" Mulder asks him.

"Vaccine? Yeah, that's what you could call it. It prevents people from becoming Super Soldiers. They test it in one of their laboratories. It only works on small children so far." He looks at Scully again. "I swear I didn't know they were after him, I thought that he'd be safe."

"Yeah," Scully whispers "I thought the same thing." Mulder places his hand on her shoulder to comfort her.

Suddenly they hear the noise of a car.

"More visitors?" Spender asks. He definitely doesn't think it was one of Skinner's best ideas to tell everyone where his hiding place is.

"That have to be Doggett, Reyes and..." Skinner starts.

"And the woman who adopted William," Scully finishes for him.

Spender has a surprised look on his face.

Chapter 12

Doggett stops the car somewhere in the middle of the woods. He gets out of the car and looks around to make sure that no one has followed them. Reyes and Mrs. Van de Kamp exit the car, too.

They start walking towards the house in silence.

"Is this their car?" Mrs Van de Kamp asks as they walk past Skinner's car.

"Yeah." Doggett nods.

"So Agent Scully is already there?" Mrs. Van de Kamp asks. She is tense and isn't sure she really wants to meet Scully.

Reyes nods. Meanwhile they have arrived at the front porch. Reyes knocks.

Skinner opens the door and Reyes enters. She smiles and hugs Mulder and Scully.

"It's good to finally see you again," she says.

Doggett smiles, too as he enters the house after Reyes. He shakes everyone's hands. Mrs Van de Kamp hesitates a moment before she goes in and Skinner closes the door after her. She looks at Scully.

Suddenly there is nothing but silence. No one knows what to say to her.

Scully takes a close look at her. Mulder has put his arm around her shoulders. He knows how hard it is for her to meet Mrs. Van de Kamp.

The atmosphere is tense.

" Mrs. Van de Kamp? I'm Assistant Director Skinner," Skinner says to finally break the silence. He points at Spender. "This is Agent Spender."

Mrs. Van de Kamp takes her eyes of off Scully for the first time and looks up. She is first looks at Skinner then at Spender. She is shocked by the sight of his disfigured face.

"You already know Agents Doggett and Reyes." Skinner continues quickly.

"This is Agent Mulder and..."

"Dana Scully." Mrs. Van de Kamp interrupts. Scully looks down.

"He has your eyes." Mrs. Van de Kamp says. They all look at her in surprise. Scully looks at her, too. She has tears in her eyes.

"So" Doggett says "Could anyone tell us now, why we're here?"

"We have to change the truth," Mulder says.

Chapter 13

They have all gone into the living room. Scully and Mulder sit on the couch. Mulder's arm lies casually around Scully's shoulder. Laura Van de Kamp sits on the other end of the couch. She looks out of place.

Reyes sits on an armchair. Doggett sits on one of the armrests.

Skinner and Spender remain standing.

"What do we know so far?" Doggett asks.

"Well, Scully and I have proof that the metal, killing the Super Soldiers can also be used as a vaccine," Mulder says. He looks at Spender and adds "He knows where we can find the vaccine. He knows where their lab is."

"Yes, but it has only been tested on children. We don't know if it also works on adults," Spender says.

"I'm sure it can't make those Super Soldiers normal again, but...it can certainly destroy them," Scully says.

"Do you think that these men took William to their lab?" Reyes asks the question that everyone has avoided so far.

"I... I don't know." Scully sound sad.

Mrs. Van de Kamp who has just been sitting there listening speaks for the first time.

"When they came to take him..," she says, "They said that something wasn't right, that they needed to check him."

"Sounds like Spender really made him useless for their plans. He's normal now." Doggett concludes.

"Maybe they took him to the lab to turn him into a Super Soldier again." Reyes suggests.

"Do you know where this lab is?" Skinner asks looking into Spender's face.

"I do... but they might have already changed the location." Spender answers. Mulder ignores his last remark.

"I need you to draw a map for me," he says. Scully looks at him worried.

"Don't try to stop me," he says before she can say anything.

"Mulder's right," Skinner says "Spender, you have to draw a map.

We have to find this lab - before they leave it." Scully looks very worried.

"We shouldn't go there without a good plan, though."

Spender leaves the living room and returns after several minutes holding a hand drawn map.

"Do you know anything about the security system?" Skinner asks him after he took a look at the map.

"No." Spender shakes his head.

"We will check that out tomorrow," Skinner says "Now, we should get some sleep." They leave the living room.

"Agent Scully," Mrs. Van de Kamp calls Scully back. Mulder looks at her and leaves as she nods.

"I just wanted you to know that Agent Reyes told me why you had to give him away..." she sighs, "I think I... I understand. I'd probably done the same, too."

Scully looks relieved.

Chapter 14

Night. Mulder lies in bed. He's still awake. Scully is lying next to him. She's asleep with her head on his chest.

Softly Mulder moves her over to the other side of the bed. Scully mumbles something, but she doesn't wake up. Carefully Mulder gets out of the bed. He puts on his clothes then he leans over the sleeping Scully. He gently kisses her hair.

"I'm sorry?" he whispers and leaves the room.

Scully turns around, but she's still asleep.

Mulder walks into the living room silently. He takes the map from the table and goes out into the hallway. After searching a while he finds the car keys in Skinner's jacket. Mulder leaves the house and walks towards the parked cars. He turns around one last time and looks back at the house. It lies there in the dark peacefully. Everyone is asleep.

Mulder gets into the car and drives off.

He has no trouble finding the right way as Spender's map is very detailed.

Suddenly he hears a familiar voice behind him.

"You shouldn't have done this."

Mulder looks into the rear-view mirror. The lone gunmen are sitting in the backseat. Byers shakes his head.

"She's never going to forgive you if something happens to you or William," he says Frohike and Langly nod.

"I know. But I have to do this. It's my only chance to change the truth."

"Luckily we're here to watch your back." Langly says.

"You can't help me this time," Mulder says and turns off the lights of the car as he comes closer to the lab. He looks into the rear-view mirror again. The gunmen are gone.

Chapter 15

Scully turns around in bed. She notices that she's alone.

"Mulder?" she asks sounding worried.

She sits up and is suddenly wide awake as she realizes that his clothes are gone.

"Mulder!" she says loudly.

"Dana? Are you okay?"

Scully turns around and is startled to see Reyes standing in the doorway.

"He's gone," she says.

Meanwhile the others woke up, too. Slowly they all enter the bedroom.

"We have to go after him He can't make it on his own." Scully says.

"You're right," Doggett says.

"I'll join you," Spender says "I'm the only one who knows the way."

"Okay, let's get dressed. We'll meet outside in five minutes," Scully says. She's very anxious.

"You're not going, Dana," Skinner says softly "I'll go."

"With all due respect, Sir." she looks at him "Don't even try to make me change my mind!"

Skinner sighs and turns towards Reyes.

"Monica, I want you to stay here with Mrs. Van de Kamp."

"Yes, Sir." Reyes nods.

They start to leave the room.

Reyes looks at Scully. She puts her hand on Scully's shoulder.

"You're going to find him. You're going to find both of them."

Scully nods and Reyes leaves. Scully dresses and goes out into the hallway.

"You're not going to let anyone harm him, are you?" Mrs. Van de Kamp stands in the hallway.

"I never could. I always wanted him to be save, Mrs. Van de Kamp."

"Laura." Mrs. Van de Kamp says. Scully gives her a small smile.

"Dana?" Doggett asks from the door. Scully turns and follows Doggett to the car.

Chapter 16

Mulder approaches the lab through the woods. He abandoned the car somewhere.

The lab is surrounded by a high fence. A guard is patrolling.

Mulder hides behind a bush next to the fence and begins cutting a hole into it. He waits until the guard has passed him again then he ducts through the hole.

He quickly moves over to the building and presses himself against the wall. The guard still hasn't seen him.

Mulder waits until the guard moves closer to him. Mulder knocks the guard down and takes his rifle as well as his key card.

After hiding the unconscious guard Mulder moves over to the door and enters.

He continues his way through a long white corridor which reminds him of a hospital. He passes several doors until he reaches a door with a sign that reads "Filing Room". He enters and moves through the aisles quickly. As he reaches the aisle marked "S" he begins searching through the files. He finally finds what he searches for and pulls out a file reading "Scully, Dana Katherine." Mulder takes a quick look at it and then pockets it.

Suddenly the silence is broken by the blaring of the alarm system.

"Shit!" Mulder aims the rifle at the door. He can hear voices in the hallway.

"He's in here somewhere."

"He's coming for the child. We should go and search the fourth floor."

"Fourth Floor: Sportswear, Lingerie, kidnapped babies," Mulder whispers to himself.

He waits until the voices are gone. Then he slowly opens the door and moves back into the hallway.

Chapter 17

Scully, Doggett, Skinner and Spender park their car next to the other one. They look towards the lab as several searchlights on the roof of the building start to illuminate the surroundings.

"The alarm just went off!" Scully screams against the noise of the sirens "We have to get them out of there!"

She starts running towards the building. The others follow her. They stop at the fence.

"That's where Mulder got in!" Doggett yells and points towards the fence.

"Where are the guards?" Skinner can barely understand his own words.

"Probably searching the building!" Spender says "The labs are on the fourth floor!"

They all go towards the door which is still open. Each of them has a gun drawn.

Suddenly silence surrounds them. Someone shut the alarm off. They hear voices.

"Have you found him?"

"Not yet. This floor is clear. He was last seen on the third floor.

He tries to make his way through to the fourth floor. That's where we wait for him."

"And the child?"

"They brought him to the basement."

"Did it work?"

"Not yet."

The voices are fading as the guards leave. Scully is very anxious.

"Agent Scully" Skinner says. It takes her a moment to realize that he's talking to her.

"I'll go to get Mulder out of here with Spender. Agent Doggett and you go to the basement!"

Scully nods. She pulls herself together.

"Let's go," she says as they separate.

Chapter 18

Mulder has finally made his way through to the fourth floor. He kneels down at a corner and listens. He tries to hear anything telling him where to find his son.

He hears nothing and walks on. Slowly he moves around the corner.

"We've been expecting you."

Mulder faces five men in black uniforms aiming their rifles at him.

He turns around and runs away as they shoot at him.

Somehow Mulder manages to escape into a room full of medical equipment unharmed. He blocks the door with a metal shelf.

"I'm so sorry, Dana?" he whispers.

The men stop firing and try to kick in the door instead. Mulder ducts behind another shelf, aiming his rifle at the door.

Suddenly he hears shots fired outside. This time it isn't the rifles but gunfire. He hears someone scream in pain.

"What the hell!" another guard yells.

Then everything is silent again.

"Mulder!" he hears a familiar voice. "Mulder, are you okay? Open the door. We have to get the hell out of here!"

Mulder opens the door and looks at Skinner.

"I'm not leaving without William!"

"They've brought him to the basement," Skinner says. Mulder heads for the stairs.

"Doggett and Scully are going to get him!"

Mulder stops.

"She's here too?"

Spender nods. Mulder looks down then he heads back for the room he came from. "We need to get the vaccine."

He looks around in the room. The vaccine is kept in a shelf behind a glass window. Mulder looks around, finds a gas cylinder and begins to smash in the glass.

The glass bursts. As does the gas cylinder. Oxygen is streaming out Mulder grabs the vaccine and leaves the room.

"Gentlemen, we just changed the truth!" he says as he hears a voice.

"They're here!"

A guard is running towards them. They head for the stairs. The guard stops next to the room and fires. The room is ablaze immediately.

Chapter 19

Doggett and Scully slowly move through the basement. Doggett carefully peers around a corner.

"There's a room at the end to the hallway. It's guarded by two men.

They're armed," he tells Scully.

"He's in there. We have to get him out!"

Doggett nods.

Suddenly the alarm goes off again. Doggett and Scully look at each other.

"The fire alarm?" one of the guards asks confused.

"What the ..." the second guard is surprised to see Doggett rushing towards him. Doggett knocks him down with one blow.

The other guard tries to hit him with his rifle but Doggett smashes his knee into the guard's abdomen first.

"What's wrong out there?" a third guard asks from inside the room.

He looks outside and is surprised to see Scully.

She smiles at him and slams the heavy door in his face. The guard goes down as well. Doggett has unarmed the guards and aims a rifle at the three of them.

Scully enters the room. She sees William on the other end of the room. He's crying. She runs over to him and rocks him gently. William clams immediately.

Doggett watches them for a second.

"Agent Sully!" he yells "We have to get out of here. The building is on fire."

Scully nods. They start running towards the stairs.

As they the climb the stairs they hear voices.

Skinner, Spender and Mulder turn around a corner and they all run out. Scully and Mulder smile at each other, both looking very happy.

William smiles, too.

"Hurry!" Spender yells.

They run towards the cars. Spender, Skinner and Doggett get into the first car and speed of. Mulder and Scully take the second car. Scully is still holding William.

Chapter 20

"They're going to return with him, aren't they?" Mrs. Van de Kamp asks. She's sitting in the kitchen of the house.

"Yes, they will." Reyes assures as she pours herself a cup of coffee.

"Did you hear that?" Reyes looks out of the window.

"I thought I heard a car."

"They can't be back yet." Mrs Van de Kamp says as she joins Reyes at the window.

They see five armed men getting out of a car. They're surrounding the building.

"Down!" Reyes says.

The men move towards the house and kick in the front door. Reyes draws her gun. She watches the kitchen door closely. She begins to fire as it opens.

One of the men screams and holds his arm while he stumbles backwards.

Reyes hits another one before a bullet hits her right arm.

She can't fire anymore. She hears Mrs. Van de Kamp scream.

"Burn the place down!" one of the men says.

"No!" Reyes crawls over to Mrs. Van de Kamp. She's bleeding heavily.

"Laura! Laura, can you hear me? We have to get out! They set the house on fire!" Reyes helps Mrs. Van de Kamp to get up. They slowly move towards the door.

Mrs. Van de Kamp passes out as they reach the front door.

Reyes manages to pull her out of the house somehow.

She sees the blurry silhouettes of three men.

"Monica!" She hears someone scream her name before she passes out as well.

Skinner is on his cell phone. He calls an ambulance.

Doggett picks up Reyes and carries her away from the burning house.

Reyes is still unconscious.

Meanwhile Mulder and Scully have arrived at the house, too.

Scully gets out of the car and sees Mrs. Van de Kamp lying on the ground. She looks at Spender standing next to her and hands him the baby then she runs towards the injured woman.

"Laura!" she screams.

"Agent Scully?" Mrs. Van de Kamp slowly opens her eyes. She closes them again. She's lost a lot of blood.

"Did you find him?"

"Yes, he's here!"

"Take good care of him, Dana." Mrs. Van de Kamp starts to cough "You can protect him."

She coughs again and blood begins to drip out of her mouth, she dies.

Mulder puts his arm around Scully and leads her away from the scene.

Chapter 21

One week later

Doggett knocks on the door of Reyes's hospital room and enters.

"Monica, you ready?"

"Give me just one minute," Reyes answers.

"Skinner said Mulder and Scully can return to the FBI. Kersh covered for us," Doggett says "The men behind this either died when the lab burned down or they vanished. Anyway we have the vaccine now, we can defend ourselves."

Reyes smiles at him.

"I'm ready. Let's go home, John. Thanks for picking me up."

Doggett smiles back at her. He takes her bag from the bed.

"Let me take this."

They walk out of the hospital, holding hands.

Scully stands at William's bed watching him sleep. Mulder enters the room. She turns her head towards him then looks back at William. She sighs.

"I think I've never been this happy before," she says smiling.

"Me neither" Mulder says. He stands behind her and wraps his arms around her then he gently kisses her neck.

They stand there a couple of minutes and look at their son who's sleeping peacefully.

"Dana," Mulder whispers into her hair.

"Yes."

"Have you ever been to France?"

"No... Why?"

"Would you like to fly to Paris with me?" he asks.

She turns to face him.

"What's the occasion?"

"Honeymoon."

The End.
