Summary: Mulder goes to see Scully after 4 years of being shut out, Scully's cancer is back :o(
My notes : I cried, hope you will too
Somewhere over California
The irritating squawk that woke up Mulder with a jolt out of his deep reverie left a permanent impression on the value of his flight. The flight attendant with the dark brown hair and deep puppy eyes was kind flashing a smile every time she went by. Although after the turbulence caused her to drop the frigid cold, extra-ice cola in his lap he no longer gave a damn what she looked like. The man in the seat next to him kept babbling on about his grandchildren and even though he never felt any hatred towards senior citizens he really didn't want to hear shit about Suzy's band concert or Mike's first basketball game. He tried to get some shut eye for the rest of the flight. He listened to the captain announce that the plane would be arriving in San Diego in twenty minutes. Mulder had to restrain himself from jumping with joy. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a folded piece of paper with the address and telephone number of his friend's house. Because he was a little weary about this whole trip he was hoping he wouldn't need to call first.
Mulder grabbed the phone after the second ring hoping not to wake the sleeping body next to him. He glanced at the clock not being able to guess who would be calling at this hour.
"Mrs. Scully? Is that you?" Mulder was now fully awake and alert.
"Fox, Dana's sick, she needs you." Mulder's heart fell to the floor. He suddenly didn't feel to well and tears sprung to his eyes.
"What's wrong? Is it the cancer? Please tell me it isn't"
"Oh Fox!! It is, it is.." Mrs. Scully sobbed into the phone. Mulder felt horrible that he couldn't physically comfort her. The body next to him stirred awake and sat up. Mulder looked at her with tears in his eyes and she rubbed his back.
"What do you want me to do? Will she see me?"
"Fox I'm so sorry I haven't talked to you before this. I didn't know what happened between you two and Dana made me promise that I wouldn't interfere'Dana needs you Fox, please will you go to her?" Mulder looked over at the woman next to him. He had been seeing Jenna for three months now. They had great times together and seemed to get along well but ever since Dana he hasn't been able to fall in love. He came close once a couple of years back, but Dana has been with him every day in his mind. He just couldn't forget her.
"Yes, Mrs. Scully, I will." After he jotted down all the information he needed he hung up with Mrs. Scully and prepared to tell his current companion that he would be going away for a while, and hopefully he wouldn't come back.
San Diego Airport
Mulder grabbed his one black suit case off the luggage wheel and headed towards the airport lobby. Mrs. Scully would be waiting for him to take him to Dana's. When he first saw her he was surprised how much she had aged. Her brown hair had streaks of gray and her wrinkle-less skin was now engraved with a few age lines. But her smile radiated like it never did before when she saw him. She ran to him and threw her arms around him crying. Mulder dropped his bags and hugged her back. She felt so soft and smelt so good he didn't want to ever let her go. It had been too long since she had seen him.
She loaded his solo suitcase in the back seat of the navy blue Oldsmobile and got into the driver side. She began to explain the things that had been happening over the years. How Dana found a job in a hospital ER after her transfer didn't go well, that things have been very difficult for her emotionally since she left Mulder, and one more change that she did not tell him all the details about.
Mulder was sick to his stomach. Four years since he last saw Dana, four whole years.
Mulder had been slaving away in the kitchen for an hour now making sure the spaghetti was cooked just right, the garlic bread with the right amount of garlic and the sauce thick and delicious. Dana said she would be home about 8ish so he was awaiting her arrival by sitting on the couch and flipping through channels. They had made some stupid bet and he had lost so he had to make them dinner. Scully had to meet with Skinner about something then stop at the store to pick up some wine. Mulder didn't tell her this but making her dinner made him feel as if he had won the bet, not lost. It was a rare time when he got to make dinner for anyone, let alone his best friend.
"Mmmmmm! Mulder that smells delicious!" Scully explained as she came through the door. She put her coat on the couch not caring where it went because her stomach's consistent growling was distracting her. She sat down and they enjoyed one of the best meals either of them had ever had. Scully had been extremely quiet all through dinner. Mulder had tried small talk, but barely got a response from Scully. He was worried but decided they could talk about it after dinner.
Afterwards they sat on the couch and sipped some wine.
"Scully, what's wrong?" She looked down at her lap. Mulder raised her chin with his hands and forced her to look him in the eye. She had tears streaming down her face. Sobs echoed throughout the apartment.
"Transfer to San Diego, effective immediately. I have to go Mulder, not only to keep my job but also for personal reasons. I want to be near my family." Mulder felt his heart shatter. Tears formed in his hazel eyes and slowly ran down his cheeks.
"Don't leave me Scully, don't leave."
"Mulder, I have to." She hugged him tightly, laying her head on his chest. He gently stroked her hair. After a while she sat up and was pulled into his lap. She gave him a soft peck on the cheek. They dared each other with their eyes to make the next move. Mulder did. At first the kiss was soft and sweet but then the hunger for one another grew and the kiss got very hot. Tongues explored the warm, wet caves, hands roamed around their bodies, and feelings swirled around openly in the air. Mulder began unbuttoning Scully's blouse and Scully worked the zipper on Mulder's pants.
"I love you Scully," Mulder said as he hoisted her up into his strong arms and carried her off into her bedroom. She trailed tiny kisses down his neck and caressed the soft chest hairs underneath his shirt. Once on the bed they began kissing and exploring feverishly. Once all clothing was removed and each body was aching to be fulfilled Scully gave Mulder all he needed to hear, "I love you." They made passionate love that night.
In the morning they both curled up on the couch and talked about what life would be like without each other and how they would see each other every chance they got. They spent the morning laughing and crying about old times, making love, and seeing the city. Mulder helped Scully pack and saw her to the airport that weekend. Promises to call and write were made and tears fell as they had to say good bye to each other.
Mrs. Scully's Car
They both thought that this wouldn't be permanent, that they could get around it somehow. Mulder was thinking about giving up the X-Files but didn't know how Scully would react to that. They talked every night for a month, then calls became less frequent, maybe once a week, then once every other week, then only once a month. After about a eight months the calls stopped coming. Mulder thought she moved on, he wanted to die. He kept working on the X-files obsessively.
"Dana is home now, but she goes to the hospital a lot. I didn't tell her you were coming. Fox, things have changed." Mulder nodded but stared out the window. His life was about to change, maybe for the better, or maybe for the worst.
At about 6:30 they arrived at Scully's apartment complex. Mrs. Scully told him that she was going to go home and wished him good luck. Mulder took the elevator to the sixth floor to number 134. He held his breath as he knocked. This is to weird, he thought. She doesn't want to see me. She doesn't. A tall girl with brown hair opened the door. She looked to be in her early twenties, maybe in her late teens. She looked at him quizzically for a second before she nearly fainted.
"Oh my God! You're Mulder aren't you!" she whispered excitedly.
"Yeah, Is Scully, um Dana here?" She moved out of the door way to let him in.
"Jen?! Who is it?" Dana called from somewhere inside the apartment. She appeared from around the corner.
"M-mulder! What are you doing here?" Mulder looked at the ground then up at her. She looked happy to see him, yet at the same time she looked worried. Her hair was still a radiant red with no gray streaks or any dulling. Her skin pale with only a little bit of evidence from the stress from over the years. She was still beautiful to him.
"I came to see you." Tears filled her strong blue eyes and she went up to him and wrapped her arms around him tightly. She never wanted to let go. They stayed embraced for what seemed like forever until Jen, the girl who answered the door coughed a little bit.
They pulled apart and looked at her. In her hands was a tiny little girl with red hair like Scully's and hazel eyes. She had the perfect little nose and the cutest face. Mulder thought she was beautiful. Then he realized it had to be Scully's. He panicked, froze in place.
"Mulder, this is Samantha." He inhaled sharply at the name.
"Is she yours?"
"Yes, Mulder, she's mine."
"Hello Samantha." Mulder looked at the little girl who smiled an adorable little smile. "Umm, are you married Scully?"
"No, actually Samantha's daddy doesn't live here'"
"Oh, I see." So she's not married, but she has a daughter not older than three years old.
"Samantha, why don't you go get Daddy." Jen let go of the little girl who ran down the hall. She came back with a frame. Mulder watched as she kissed it. He noticed she was wearing a tiny cross like her mother's, with something else on the chain. A little alien head. Mulder smiled inwardly. "Hand the picture to Daddy." Mulder's eyes went wide. Samantha handed him the picture and tears sprung to his eyes. He was Samantha's Daddy. Jen left the room.
"Scully? How? When? Really?"
"Our last night together, yes Mulder, really. I was so scared. I didn't think you would want a baby, you had the X-files, your own life. I thought that.. I dunno.. Mulder I am so sorry!!" Scully broke down crying. She sunk to the floor sobbing. Samantha climbed into her mommy's lap.
"Dana, I loved you, I would have given up the X-files in a heart beat. She's ours? I forgive you really, but I love you, didn't you know?"
"I was so confused Mulder, with my new job, leaving you, you on the brink of discovering the truth, I couldn't tear you away from that. I didn't even know if I was going to keep the baby. I was so confused." Mulder sat down on the floor tears falling from his eyes. He pulled Scully and Samantha into his lap.
Mulder put Samantha into bed that night. He asked her questions about her stuffed animals, and read her favorite book, and even kissed her forehead before turning out the lights. Scully watched them from the bedroom door with tears in her eyes. Jen, the live in baby sitter decided to stay in her room knowing that the two of them needed to be alone.
"Scully, I love you so much. I don't ever want to leave you again. Nor do I want to lose Samantha. Please don't tell me now that you have some Fabio- Californian guy stuffed away in your closet."
"No Mulder, I couldn't fall in love again after you. I couldn't think of another man. You're the only one I've been with in four years."
"Scully, are you sick?"
"Yeah Mulder, I am."
"But what about the chip?"
"It's lost its effect, the cancer is spreading rapidly. I'm going to die Mulder, I'm dying."
"Oh God Scully! No! You can't I won't let you."
"The doctors say I only have a few weeks to live, I'm not being treated now. Just pain killers, no chemo." Mulder wrapped Scully in his arms. She cried and cried and cried. He did too. They fell asleep in each others arms on the couch. Mulder promised himself that he was going to not think about the future and just live life right now in the moment with his Scully and their daughter.
"Mommy! Daddy! Jen and I made breakfast!" Samantha came bouncing into the living room jumping on the couch next to them. Jen said she had to go and left quickly blowing a kiss to Samantha who blew one back. She then placed a kiss on Mulder's cheek then Scully's and dragged them out of bed to eat.
The table was set with three places, scrambled eggs sat in a bowl steaming, toast was made, and coffee poured into to mugs, juicy-juice in a plastic cup with aliens and a UFO on it. Mulder commented on the cup and Scully gave an explanation, "I tried to raise her to be part of both of us, she may believe in aliens but she also knows how to be a pretty damn good skeptic to. I taught her that she can believe but has to know that evidence is needed to back up her theory."
"Dana, she's only three."
"Mulder she's our daughter." He smiled at that and leaned towards her and gave her a soft, gentle, loving kiss.
Samantha shouted "Eww!" and covered her eyes. Her mommy reached over and tickled her until she burst out laughing.
Trick or treating
Samantha Melissa Mulder was running ahead of her tired out parents. Mulder and Scully chased after her. They had only gone to three houses and already she was bouncing all over the place. Mulder grabbed her hand as she stepped up to the apartment door. She knocked with the other hand and prepared to get her bag filled with candy.
A short little woman opened the door and shrieked in delight at Samantha's costume. Mulder had to admit that the little navy jacket over her white blouse and the tiny navy skirt made her look adorable. She had a Navy jacket with yellow lettering saying FBI on the sleeve and back. A photo ID tag clipped onto her jacket, just like the real FBI ones. Samantha had three days until Halloween and because of Scully's cancer she did not have a costume picked out. So Mulder racked hi brain to think of something easy and original and immediately had Skinner mail him a small jacket and tag. She looked just like Scully in that outfit. After trick or treating for about two hours Samantha ended up with a bag full of candy and two very tired parents.
"Scully, what do you say about marriage?"
"Are you asking me how I feel about it or if I will?" She drew tiny circles around his nipples and kissed his chest.
"I'm asking you, Scully, will you be my wife?"
"Yes Mulder I will." They kissed passionately and held each other for the rest of the night.
Mulder woke up with something hard crusted to his chest. He looked down to see blood dried up on his chest and on Scully's nose. He sat up quickly panicking.
"Mulder what's.. oh." She brought her hand up to her nose and felt the blood. She ran to the bathroom to wipe it off and get a towel for Mulder to clean his beautiful chest with. When she came out she said "We better get married soon."
Notre Dame Church
"Do you Fox take Dana to have and to hold, until death do you part?"
"Do you Dana take Fox to have and to hold, until death do you part?"
"I do." Mulder kissed her full force and they both enjoyed it immensely.
They took the wedding pictures and spent time with Bill Scully and Tara, Mrs. Scully, and the rest of Scully's family. Skinner and the gunmen had flown to California on short notice and everyone had a wonderful time. Adorable little Samantha was the hit of the wedding as she played flower girl and walked down the aisle. No honeymoon was made since they wanted to stay right where they were with family and friends nearby.
In the last weeks of Scully's life they did many things as a family. They were out every night either to dinner, or to a museum, a movie. Once in awhile they stayed in snuggled up on the couch. Scully became very weak about two weeks after their wedding. It was harder and harder for her to go out and she looked sicker and sicker. She was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.
Scully looked up at the faces around her. Mulder and her daughter had been by her side the whole week. Margaret often came in but didn't want to take up the time that she could be spending with her husband. Bill and Tara came, even Skinner and the Lone gunmen flew back to see her. She was happy they were all with her. When Dana kissed everyone goodbye and hugged her daughter really tight before she asked to be alone with Mulder everyone knew what was happening. She began crying softly causing everyone else to cry too. Mulder climbed into the bed with her and pulled her close to him. He whispered comforting words of love to her and promised that he would be with her someday.
"I don't know when it happened Scully, but somewhere along the line you stole my heart. I love you so much, and I have for so long. I am not mad at you for turning away from me like that when you got pregnant, I want you to know that I completely forgive you. You have made my past nine or ten years wonderful. I thank God everyday for you and our wonderful child. Its going to be so hard for me to do this alone you know, but I'm sure your mother will help me out. She looks so much like you Scully, she's beautiful. Thank you Scully. Thank you for working with me on the X-Files, for trusting me, for loving me, for having our beautiful daughter, for being you, for being my wife. Thank you for being my one in five billion. I love you and I always will."
Scully looked up at him smiling. Her head hurt very badly but she tried so hard to stay alive, "I love you Mulder. Thank you." They fell asleep on that hospital bed but only Mulder woke up. Mulder knew that living without Scully would be one of the hardest things he'd ever have to do. Raising their daughter is another.
I buried my wife today. I had to let go of her. I stood up there, over her casket and said some words about her. I told everyone how much she has meant to me over the years as a partner, friend, and wife. Samantha got up with me, she was crying to but wiped my tears away as I talked. I don't think anyone can understand how much Scully really meant to me. I promised her that I would be strong and I really will. I found a journal/letter that she had written to me during our separation about her feeling during pregnancy and her feelings about missing me. I donated money to a charity that put Scully's name on our bench by the reflecting pool in Washington, D.C. I'm not sure where I will be living yet but I think I'm going to ask Margaret to move in with me to help take care of Samantha. I forgot to thank Scully for naming our daughter after my sister, but I will not think of things I did not do or say to Scully. I think I'm going to need all the help I can get raising Sam, that is if she's anything like her mother was. God I really love her, both of them.
