Scully sat, staring blankly out the window into the seeming nothingness of the city street below. Night time had quick become a time of thought, of reflection and introspection, for her; for, at night, she felt the loneliness the most. At night, the contrast between her former life and that which had recently become hers was all too clear. Without Mulder everything was different. Everything. The night lent its clarity not only to her thoughts, but also to her fears and doubts. How had any of this happened?

As if on cue, the rumbling movement from her belly made its presence known. His. His presence, she reminded herself. Somehow, all along, she had known it was a boy, had sensed it. Wouldn't Mulder love that? Mother's intuition? Of this she wasn't sure. But, her suspicions had been confirmed for her just over five weeks ago when she received the results of her amniocentesis. She had an entire battery of tests performed, a paternity and maternity test included. The fears and doubts that had pervaded her every thought needed assuaged. And, assuaged they were. The baby was, on all accounts, healthy and normal. But, was this her child? Was it Mulder's? Was it indeed the product of the few and rare nights she in which she had allowed herself to indulge with her partner? The tests provided her answers. Yes, on all accounts. But, the $64,000 question remained - How???

How? Well, she knew how, but how was this little miracle even possible? She was supposed to be barren. The one thing that repeatedly came flooding back to her was the memory of her little outing without that cigarette-smoking bastard. She had fallen asleep in the car and awakened, no longer in her clothes, but in her pajamas, and in a strange bed to boot. He had drugged her. Of this she was sure. Well, almost sure. She had been awake for nearly 72 hours. The stress of that, let alone the monotony of cross-country driving was enough to render even her near-comatose.

So, this single event stuck out in her mind - the key to all her answers? Perhaps. And, if that was the case, why? Why give her back the ability to have children when they went to great lengths to take that from her in the first place? It didn't make sense. Was this baby just some fluke? A true miracle? Something not even CancerMan himself had his hand in? There was only one man, and one alone, who held the answers to her questions, and he was dead. Little did Scully know, the answers to all of her questions were not quite as out of reach as she imagined.

The knock on the door came as a shock to Scully, breaking her out of her nightly reverie. The man standing on the other side of the door, however, was the biggest shock of all.

"Oh, my God. I thought...Krycek said..."

"Yes. I am sure Alex thought he had rid himself and the world of me for good. He is a strong one, that man, but not always the brightest. He has yet to learn that I shall always remain one step ahead." He paused, then, almost abruptly. "Aren't you going to invite me in Agent Scully?"

"Frankly I'm surprised you even bothered coming to the door. Usually I just find you sitting in my living room. What the hell are you doing here anyway?"

"I believe I have information that may be of interest to you."

"Mulder...You bastard! What have you done with him? Where is Mulder?" Her anger was evident not only in her tone, but even in the stiffness and gesture of her five-month-pregnant body.

Cancerman pushed his way past her, tossing his acerbic comment at her as he passed. "I know nothing of Mulder's predicament nor his fate. I assure you that I had no part in his disappearance. I do have information, however, related to another *Mulder*."

Scully's hand went instinctively and reflexively to the soft mound of her stomach. Following his lead, she seated herself in the chair across from his lanky form seated coolly on the couch.

"What do you know about my baby?"

"I know, Dana, that I had nothing to do with its creation. That is something about which only you and Mulder have...intimate knowledge, shall we say. Did he even know before he went missing?"

"You go to hell! I am not going to discuss this with you. Tell me what you know!"

"When you were taken, years ago, tests were performed on you. Your ova were harvested - this you know. They did not, however, take all of you ova. There is a certain number, a large amounts I'm sure you know, of immature ova in every woman that never have the potential in a short lifespan to mature. You have some of these immature ova still. Consider, too, that Agent Mulder was at one point infected with this alien 'black oil' virus vaccine. You know, and discovered yourself, that this has effected his DNA. He is immune to the virus itself. At the same time it has awakened other portions of his brain. Have you considered what other effects it has had on him? What the possibilities are?"

"What the hell are you getting at?"

"I am saying that there are implications to all of this, that even we did not comprehend. We could not possess all knowledge of the effects the virus or the vaccine may have had. The abilities to...well, perhaps the ability to mature ova. The ability to create as well as destroy."

"So, what are you saying? Are you telling me that the cure to my infertility was in Mulder? In his DNA? Are you saying that the cure was in Mulder's sperm?!"

"Essentially, yes. With any other, you would still be barren. But, because of Mulder's unique...attributes, genetically, you were able to create the very life you are carrying."

Scully sat, stunned looking at the smug form across from her, realization and disbelief sweeping across her features. After an awkward moment of silence, she again spoke.

"If this is all true, why? Why are you telling me this? Why now?"

"So that you understand your singular situation. So that I can begin the re-bandment of the Consortium, with that which you alone can give me. You were taken to Antarctica. Agent Mulder saved you with an antidote, a pseudo-vaccine. You, too, are immune to the alien virus. Imagine the implications. A father immune to the alien virus. A mother who is immune as well. Will your child be naturally immune? The *first* naturally immune individual? We don't know, but the prospects are extremely valuable."

Scully shot up, finger pointing threateningly into the face of her uninvited guest. "If you even think you are going to come near my child, you are fucking insane! I don't care if I have to pack up, leave, and assume a new identity, I will not let you touch my baby!"

"Dana, I mean no harm. All I want is a few blood samples after the baby is born. If the baby is immune, fine, we have what we need. If not, then that's fine too. I would never hurt my own grandchild. Don't you see, this child, your baby, could be the savior of the human race. How can you possibly stand in the way of that?"

His words stung her, that reality of it all slicing her like a knife. The air was so thick with his words, her breathing, nor her thoughts, came easily. Later, after the man and the putrid stench that accompanied him had gone, Scully sat, tears streaming down her face. Confusion and embitterment claiming her countenances, her internal war raged. What did this all mean for her? For their baby? Could she trust this man? He had left, but not before assuring her that, whatever the case, he would get what he needed. She sighed, wishing desperately that Mulder was there with her, that he could help her make this decision. What would he do? Certainly both of them would only want their child's safety. Wouldn't allowing the blood samples be the best way to insure that safety? Unsure and scared, she couldn't help it as visions of Mulder and their beautiful, dark-haired little boy came unbidden into her mind. She would do anything to make that vision a reality, but at what cost? Her sole thought as sleep finally overtook her, was of Mulder and her plea to him:

"Come home. I've come this far with you, and I can't make it the rest of the way without you."

end.
