Title: Someone Else's Child
Summary: Scully gets disquieting news about the baby she is carrying.
Dana Scully stood in front of her bedroom mirror, as she had done so many times during her pregnancy. She'd been through a lot in her life, but she couldn't remember the last time she'd been this nervous. Last week she had a 2nd ultrasound and amnio. She ordered a complete genetic workup from the amnio, and she was on her way to get the results. She just couldn't stand the uncertainty of not knowing whether her baby was human or not.
Scully's Doctor's Office
"How are you this morning, Dana?" the doctor said.
"I'm fine, thank you," she said. "But I'm really anxious to get the results from the amnio."
"Well, I have good news and bad," he told her.
Scully's heart sank. Her mind was racing with thoughts of everything that could possibly be wrong with the baby.
"Let's start with the good news," she said, her voice shaky.
"The good news is that the genetic tests we ran show that your baby is 100% human. It's a boy," he said.
"What's wrong with him?" Scully asked with tears in her eyes.
Scully is setting stunned and teary-eyed in her doctor's office. He has bad news for her.
"As you know, every band of DNA a person has comes from either his/her mother or father. The results from your amnio show that none of this baby's DNA came from you," he said.
Scully was absolutely shocked. She'd been so relieved to hear that the baby was human. She was taken completely off guard by this news. After a long silence, she asked slowly:
"Are you trying to tell me the baby I'm carrying isn't mine?"
"I'm so sorry, Dana. We'll do a DNA test of every egg from Zeus Genetics. We will find out what happened and who the biological mother is. But Dana, that clinic has thousands of patients, so this may take some time," her doctor told her.
Just then, her cell phone rang. It was her new partner Agent John Doggett.
"Hello," she answered.
"Scully, it's me, Doggett," he said. "I just got a call from an FBI agent in Oregon. Last night, a hunter found a man wondering dazed and confused in the woods. The description that the hunter gave of the man matches Agent Mulder."
"We have to go there, Agent Doggett," she said urgently. "I'll come pick you up. Where are you?"
"I'm in our office," he said.
"I'll be right there," she told him.
Scully & Doggett's rental car
Somewhere btw. WA and OR
The agents have been on the road for a little over an hour now. Even thought Doggett didn't know his new partner very well, he could tell something was bothering her.
"You wanna stop for a bite to eat?" he asked her.
"I'm not hungry," she said.
This worried him. He had just found out she was pregnant three weeks ago. He knew the pain of loosing a child, and he didn't wish that on anyone.
"Scully, you really shouldn't be skipping meals right now," he warned.
"I told you, I'm not hungry. I'm fine!" she snapped back.
She sat there quietly for a few minuets, as they continued to drive along. Her doctor's words "none of his DNA came from you" played over and over in her mind the whole time. Finally, she couldn't hold it in anymore. She could no longer hide what she was going through and she broke down crying. Doggett pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the car.
"What's wrong?" he asked with genuine concern in his voice.
"I don't want to talk about it," she said, trying to get a hold of herself.
He suspected that her reaction had something to do with this possible report of Mulder's whereabouts. Scully never discussed the nature of her's and Mulder's relationship with Doggett, but he suspected that they had been VERY close.
"Look," he said, gently placing his hand on her shoulder. "I may not be Agent Mulder, but I am a friend. I'm on your side 100%. Please, tell me what's been bothering you."
"It's the baby I'm carrying," she whispered. "It's not mine."
Doggett was speechless. He had always assumed she had gotten pregnant the natural way.
"How can it not be yours?" he asked.
"My doctor told me the clinic mixed my eggs up with some other woman's," she said.
She fell apart at the sound of her voice saying those words.
"Oh, John, I've wanted children all my life. I thought it would never happen. I've already lost my best friend and soul mate to God knows what, and now, it seems, I've 'lost' the baby that's helped me keep going," she told him.
It was all falling into place for Doggett now. Could Mulder be the father of this child? At least MENT to be the father? He gave Scully a hug.
We're GOING to find him," he told her. "We'll find out what happened with the baby too."
A police station in Oregon
Scully was exhausted. She and Doggett had been on the road all night. However, she was determined to let NOTHING stand in her way of getting Mulder back. FBI Agent Derek Simpson came out to greet the partners. He was accompanied by a middle-aged man.
"Agents Scully and Doggett, I'd like you to meet Travis James. He's the hunter who filed the missing person report," Simpson said.
"Nice to meet you, Mr. James," Scully said. "The man that you found in the woods, did he say anything to you?"
"Not anything I could make out clearly. He just kept rambling on and on about how horrible life was on the ship," James said.
At that, Scully felt sick to her stomach. She herself had been abducted. She knew how "horrible life on the ship" was. She had been through all the painful tests. Her heart went out to her missing partner more now than it ever had.
"Mr. James, did this man say what kind of ship he came from?" Doggett asked.
"No he didn't. I thought he was AWOL from the Navy," James said. "I went back to my truck to get my car phone to report him, and when I came back he was gone. There was no trace of him at all. It was like he just vanished into thin air."
"Thank you for your time and for coming at such a late hour, Mr. James. You may go now," Scully told him.
Police Station in OR
Agent Simpson came in with a photo.
"These are enlarged photos of the shoe prints left by the man that Mr. James saw," Simpson said. "We're trying to determine if they're the same size as Mulder's feet."
"Is this the only evidence we have to go on?" Scully asked.
"It is so far," Simpson answered. "We have a search team, including dogs, in the area looking for DNA evidence. So far, they haven't turned up anything."
"Did anyone else see anything?" Doggett asked. "Like maybe the ship he was talking about or where he disappeared to when Mr. James was using his car phone?"
We're still asking around. But no one else has come forward as a witness," Simpson answered.
"I want on that search team," Scully demanded. "I know Mulder, where he would go, what he would do."
"Very well, I'll call out there 1st thing in the morning and make a place for you, Agent Scully," Simpson said.
Area where Mulder was last seen
Scully meets with team leader, Agent Jessica Davis.
"We've searched for almost three days straight, Agent Scully," Davis said. "If Mulder was here, he simply didn't leave anything behind."
"I'm NOT giving up on him!" Scully said hotly.
"You have until noon," Davis told her. "That's when I'm officially calling off this search."
Scully was furious. How was she suppose to search the entire forest in just 4 hours? It seemed impossible. Nevertheless, she got down on her hands and knees and began her search. She vowed NEVER to give up on Mulder. After all, he had never given up on her. Suddenly, she spotted something that gave her hope. She called Doggett and Davis to meet her in the woods.
"What did you find, Scully?" Doggett asked.
"I found this pile of sunflower seeds over here," she said. "They make a trail out of the woods to open land."
"What's so significant about sunflower seeds?" Doggett asked.
Scully almost smiled at that question.
"Mulder loves sunflower seeds," she told him. "He always has some in his pocket."
"Scully turned and faced team leader Davis.
"I want these sunflower seeds sent to D.C. for analysis," Scully told her. "I want them checked for saliva, blood, and fingerprints. I want all results run through the computer for a possible match."
Scully was startled by the sudden ringing of her cell phone.
"Hello," she answered.
"Sorry to bother you at work, Dana," her doctor said. "But I got the test results of that clinic wide test in. I think it would be best if we talk about them face to face."
"I'll be right there," she said with urgency in her voice.
She ended the call and turned back to Davis.
"Hold that order, Ms. Davis. I have some urgent business back in Washington," she said. "I'll take the seeds myself.
Scully's flight to WA D.C.
Scully's on an emergency flight back to Washington. She took the sealed bag of sunflower seeds on the plane in her carry-on bag. As she looked at them, she thought back to the time when Mulder and Morris Fletcher had switched identities in Area 51. She remembered how Mulder ate sunflower seeds out of her hand. She didn't know if she'd ever see him alive again after that either. God, that was such an overwhelming memory now. She had to bite her lip to keep from breaking down.
Scully rushes in with the seeds. She tells the technician what she's looking for.
"I'll try to have the results in a couple of hours, Agent," the technician said.
"I have a meeting to get to, Scully said, referring to her doctor's appointment. "I'll be back as soon as I can. Call me as soon as you find something."
"Of course, Ms. Scully," the technician said. "We WILL find him."
"Thank you," Scully replied with a slight smile.
Scully's Doctor's office
The doctor walks in with a stack of tests. The results were so unexpected that he wanted Scully to see them for herself.
"Dana, I've been looking through these results all morning and frankly, I don't know what to say," he said.
Scully could tell by the look on his face how the tests turned out.
"You didn't find the biological mother, did you?" she said.
"Dana, I don't know what else to do," he said. "We could order a test of eggs donated at other clinics in the area. But, it's unlikely that we'll find the mother there."
Scully didn't know how much more of this she could take. She just had to know, and soon, how this baby came to be.
"Doctor, I want to test all the sperm donations from Zeus Genetics," she told him. "If we can find the biological father, maybe he can lead us to the mother."
"Very well," the doctor said. "I'll do all I can to make it a priority."
"Thank you, doctor," she said as she was leaving.
As she walked out, thoughts raced through her mind that gave her chills. She already knew this child wasn't hers. What if it was the child of two total strangers? That made her think the worst. What if the biological parents want this child? That would mean she'd have to give it up. Her heart broke at the thought.
Skinner accompanies Scully to the crime lab for the results of the tests on the sunflower seeds.
"We've got the tests in on those sunflower seeds," the technician said. "We've found fingerprints and saliva that match Agent Mulder."
Scully breathed a sigh of relief. Mulder was still alive. Now all she had to do was find him.
"Thank you so much," Scully said.
She called Doggett on her cell phone.
"Doggett here," he answered.
"Agent Doggett, it's Scully," she said. "The crime lab just confirmed that those sunflower seeds belonged to Mulder. I'm going to catch the first flight back to Oregon. I think they're leaving him in the woods from time to time. I think that's why he left his sunflower seeds there."
"So, now all we have to do is wait for him to come back, then we take him home," Doggett assumed.
"Exactly," Scully confirmed.
"I'll have our people camp out all around the area," Doggett said. "If he does come back, we won't miss him this time."
Doggett didn't share Scully's belief that Mulder had been abducted by aliens, but he was willing to keep the search going since they now had hard evidence that Mulder was still in the area and quite possibly still alive.
Scully had grabbed a sandwich and orange juice from the airport and headed to re-join the search team. Doggett had posted a team of agents every 30 miles of the woods as well as the surrounding open land. He and Scully took the 30 miles closest to where the sunflower seeds had been found. Scully gets in Doggett's pick-up truck.
"Did you have a good trip," he asked her.
"I got good news and bad," she replied, referring to the results of the tests on the sunflower seeds and the results from her doctor. "But we're not here to talk about me," she continued. "We're here to find Mulder and bring him home."
She and Doggett checked in with the other teams every 10 minuets for the next two hours. Doggett fell asleep around 11:00pm. Scully was frustrated but decided not to wake him up unless she saw or heard something. She decided to turn the radio on at 11:12pm. As soon as she did, the stations began to switch rapidly from one to another. A few seconds later Scully was blinded by a bright light. The next time she looked at the clock it was 11:21pm. She had just lost nine minuets!! Her mind quickly raced back to her first case with Mulder. The time loss of nine minuets had been associated with UFO activity in these same woods where she and Doggett were now.
Suddenly, she saw something that looked like an adult, human male fall from a nearby tree. She woke her partner up and then ran after the victim. It was him. He was extremely pale, had large cuts and bruises all over his body, and he was going in and out of consciousness. She had no way of knowing if he had internal injuries or how serious they were. But for a brief moment none of that mattered. He was alive!!
She picked up his head and lay his cold body up against her. She kissed his forehead and stroked his hair. The she held him tightly against her. Right at that moment, she felt the baby kick for the first time. It was almost like even the unborn child knew that Mulder had been found. Tears of joy streamed down Scully's face. She looked up to see Doggett on his cell phone. He had called for an ambulance.
The paramedics were there in a matter of minuets. Scully rode to the hospital with Mulder in the ambulance. Doggett followed closely behind in his pick-up.
Mulder's Hospital Room
Mulder has been stabilized in the emergency room. He's now resting in a private room with Scully at his bedside. Skinner has just arrived from Washington.
"How's he doing?," he asked.
"His heart flatlined twice in the ER. He has internal scare tissue that may need to be removed. And he'll most likely have to have skin graphs for the burns on his face and arms. But, he's stable for now," Scully informed her boss.
"Good," Skinner said. "I want you to go to the hotel and get some rest."
"No!," she snapped harshly at him. "I won't leave him in this condition. I want to be here when he wakes up."
"I'll stay here until you get back," he said. "I just want you to get a few good hours of sleep. You've been through a lot."
"He's the one who's been through a lot," she said. "I'm the only one here who knows what it's like to be abducted. When he wakes up, he's going to need me."
"I'll call you if he wakes up," Skinner assured her.
He could see she wasn't going anywhere and he didn't want to agitate or upset her further.
"Just get some rest," he said.
"Yes, sir," she responded, hoping it would end the conversation.
Skinner wanted to call his secretary and update her on the situation. Since cell phones weren't allowed in the hospital, he went to look for a pay phone.
Scully did keep her word about getting some rest. As soon as her boss left the room, she climbed into bed next to Mulder. He looked terrible, almost un-human, but she didn't care. She lay on her side and nuzzled her face in his neck. She felt her baby kick again. She felt that her unborn child had a deep connection with Mulder. It kicked her every time she approached him. She hoped that was a good sign, a sign that at least the baby was his. She also hoped it would be an incentive for him to keep fighting. She took Mulder's hand, placed it on her belly, and held it there.
"Please don't give up," she whispered in his ear. "Please don't leave me all alone with a baby on the way. It's a boy. Don't you want to meet him? He needs you, Mulder. I need you too."
She began to cry uncontrollably and buried her face in the pillow. She placed her hand on her belly next to Mulder's and fell asleep. She dreamed of what it should have been like for them.
Mulder sat nervously on Scully's sofa waiting for her to get back from her doctor's appointment. He'd done this so many times over the past 15 months. He had been the one who told her not to give up when the IVF had failed that first time. But he didn't know how many more months in a row he could see her come home from the doctor's office so hurt.
She walked in the door took a few steps, and just stood there in a daze. Mulder rushed over to her.
"Scully.....?" he said.
Tears began to roll down her face. He hugged her tightly, like he had so many times before.
"It's alright, Scully," he said, trying to sound comforting. "Everything will be okay."
"Yes," she said. "It's wonderful!"
He hadn't expected that part.
"What?," he asked.
She stepped back and wiped the tears from her face.
"I'm almost two months pregnant," she told him. "It finally worked this time."
"I TOLD you not to ever give up on a miracle," he said.
They both stood there in shock for a few minutes. Then he said quietly........
"I'm really going to be a dad."
Now tears were rolling down his face also. Ironically, last year, when he told her 'yes', he thought he was just doing it for her. But now he realized, this was his only living relative. Now he wanted this baby as badly as she did. Maybe even more so.
Mulder's Hospital Room
Doggett stands in the doorway. He takes a few minuets to just stare at Scully. She looked so peaceful laying next to Mulder. Doggett had never seen her that way.
"Agent Scully," he said, shaking her gently.
"That's the way it's suppose to be! That's the way it should have been!" she shouts.
"What!?" Doggett asked.
She lifted her head and looked around for a few seconds.
"Sorry, Agent Doggett," she said. "I was just having a dream."
"Sorry to wake you, but there was an urgent phone call for you back at the hotel," he told her. "It was from a doctor in D.C. He said something about needing to talk to you about the results of a test."
He handed her a piece of paper with a name and phone number on it. It was her OBY/YN. There was no way she was going back to Washington and leave Mulder in the condition he was in, so she went to find a conference room. She hoped that, given the circumstances, her doctor would be willing to give her the test results over the phone.
Scully calls her doctor.
"I hope you understand my situation and why I can't come back to WA," she said.
"I'm so sorry to hear about your colleague, Dana," the doctor said. "I know you two are really close. It is very unusual for me to give this type of test result over the phone, but considering your current circumstances.......Dana, are you sitting down?"
"Yes, doctor, I'm ready," she said.
"Your baby's DNA matches a recent sperm donor named Fox Mulder," he told her.
She knew it!! It had to be Mulder's!! Now she knew for sure it was!!! But, she still didn't know who the mother was.
"Mulder was my chosen donor," she said. "This doesn't tell us anything about the mother, does it?," she asked disappointed.
"Dana, you don't understand," he said. "You're not carrying Fox Mulder's child. Your child IS Fox Mulder."
At that, she hung up the phone without thinking. She couldn't imagine how this would turn out. Would she have to terminate her pregnancy for Mulder's sake? This was going to be a horrible shock for him. He didn't even know she was pregnant. Now, he'd have to hear THIS news!! How on earth would he handle it? What would it do to their relationship? She looked up to see Doggett standing in the doorway.
"Agent Scully, I thought you'd like to know that Agent Mulder is semiconcious. I thou.........," he said.
She never heard what he was about to say. She bolted from her chair and ran down the hall.
Mulder's Hospital Room
Scully flew to his side and took his hand in hers. He squeezed it weakly.
"I've missed you, Scully," he said with a slight smile.
"I've missed you so much, Mulder," she responded.
She sat down on the bed beside him. She was holding it tightly, like she was afraid he might disappear if she let go. She brought his hand to her lips and kissed it. Then, she sat there and just stared at him with tears in her eyes. She couldn't believe he was really back and he was okay. Suddenly, she felt him pull his hand away from hers and place it on her swollen belly.
"Scully?!," he said, looking shocked.
"Yes, Mulder," she said. "I'm 6 months pregnant, but it's complicated."
He began to cry.
"I'm really going to have a baby!!," he said. "I'm going to be a father!!"
She wiped the tears from his face with the back of her hand.
"Like I said, it's not that simple. We'll talk about it later."
Mulder's Hospital Room
Mulder is sitting up in bed flipping through the channels on the TV. Scully is curled up in bed beside him, asleep. Mulder's nurse, an elderly woman, came in the room.
"It's so good to see you up and about today, Mr. Mulder," she said.
Scully sat up slowly and yawned.
"Oh, good morning, Mrs. Mulder," the nurse said to Scully. "How are you today?"
"I'm fine, thank you. And it's Scully by the way," Scully said.
"You kept your own last name," the nurse said. "A lot of young, working women are doing that these days."
Mulder smiled at that. He thought it was sweet that his nurse thought Scully was his wife.
"I bet you two are ready to get back home to DC," the nurse continued.
"What?" Mulder asked, switching the TV off.
"You're being transferred to a DC hospital," she informed him. "You'll be kept overnight for observations, and if all goes well, you'll be a free man again by this time tomorrow night."
"That's great, nurse," he said, putting his hand on Scully's belly. "After all, 'Mrs. Mulder' and I have responsibilities now."
"Oh, Congratulations!!" she said. "I didn't even notice. How far along are you?"
"Six, almost, seven months," Scully answered.
With Mulder ready to get on a bullhorn and shout her pregnancy to the whole world, Scully could tell that she's have to tell him the whole story about the baby. And soon. But now, they had to get their stuff packed and get him ready for the transfer to Washington.
"What?!?!," Mulder said in shock.
"I-I don't know exactly what happened," Scully said nervously. "I intend to find out, but I wanted to get you well first."
"How could this happen?" he asked. "Didn't you suspect something weird was going on? Do you have any idea what kind of danger this child will be in when 'they' find out who he really is?"
Scully was in tears. She had expected a reaction like this, but it still hurt her to actually see it.
"I'm sorry," she snapped back at him. "I know this must be really demeaning for you. If you don't want me to have this baby, I'll understand."
He felt incredibly guilty. Was she actually willing to terminate her pregnancy for his sake? How completely un-selfish of her. She wanted children more then anything in this world. That thought hit him especially hard. This was probably her only chance to have a child.
He went to her and put his arms around her. He held her close to him, tightly.
"I'm so sorry, Scully. This isn't your fault. I'm sorry if I made you feel like it is. We'll figure out what to do," he promised her.
Mon. the following week
Mulder has been staying in Scully's guest room. His apartment had been rented in the months that he had been assumed dead. Scully was laying on her bed. She had fallen asleep waiting a re-run of "Lost in Space" on the SCI-FI channel. She woke up to the sound of Mulder coming in the front door.
"Mulder, where have you been?" she asked.
"I have good news," he told her. "Your OB/GYN has been arrested and his medical license has been revoked. It turns out, he's been using women like you, women desperate for children, for some time. He had them find a donor so they would think they were pregnant with a normal child. But he's really been using women to further his Hitler-like goal of creating the "master" race. He associates with several Neo-Nazi groups."
"Then why on earth would he clone you, Mulder?" she questioned. "I mean, you're Jewish. It seems to me like you'd be the last person he'd clone.
"It's likely that he didn't know," Mulder said. "The Mulder name isn't Jewish. I'm Jewish from my father's mother. We're lucky he was caught before he had an opportunity to find out."
I'm glad it's over, that he can't do this to anyone else," she said. "But we still have to make our decision about this baby," she said, letting her hand rest on her belly.
"I've already made my decision," he said.
He pulled a envelope out from under his jacket, which was laying on the bed.
She opened it. It was a bunch of paper........and a beautiful, gold, heart-shaped locket.
"Thank you, Mulder," she said. "It's beautiful. Will you help me put it on?"
As he fastened the necklace around her neck, he told her:
"I've read that some women actually morn the loss of their pregnancy after the baby is born. They say they miss the closeness they had with their baby. So, I though, you could put the baby's 1st picture in this locket. That way, he'll always be close to your heart."
"You-you-you mean you want me to have this baby even though......," she asked.
He picked the envelope up and pulled out the papers. He handed them to her. They were the papers she'd need to adopt the baby.
"You're going to be a wonderful mother, Scully," he said. He placed his hand on her belly. "This is one lucky baby."
"You really don't mind?" she asked.
"Scully, listen to me," he said. "I'll be almost 41 years old when this baby is born. He may grow up to look exactly like me, but 41 years is a long time. His life experiences and mine will be completely different. And it's those life experiences, Scully, that make a person be a unique individual, not looks."
"I-I don't know how I'll ever be able to thank you," she said.
They stood there and just held each other tightly for a long time.
Three years later
Mulder and Scully both quit the FBI and the X-Files shortly before Brien David Scully was born. They named him Brien because it was one of Scully's favorite Irish names. They named him David in honor of Mulder's Jewish background. Scully had wanted to give him the Mulder last name as well. But, knowing the danger that came with the name, Mulder refused. He'd let his son take his name when he was old enough to understand the danger that came with it.
Scully took a job teaching full-time at the medical school. She's in charge of the Pathology students. Mulder used his long forgotten Psychology degree to open his own practice. He specializes in patients who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of alien abduction.
As for Brien David, he recently started attending Holy Cross Catholic pre-school. Some day, he would learn the truth about how he came to be. But for now, his only problem was getting in trouble at school for throwing sunflower seed shells on the floor. Otherwise, he was a happy, healthy, Catholic schoolboy who had two very loving parents.
