TITLE: Early Morning Call SUMMARY: A telephone call early in the morning is rarely good news.... THE DISCLAIMER: Any character you recognized from the TV. series belongs to 1013 and Fox. I am just borrowing them. FEEDBACK: Please. Send to myriss1013@yahoo.com AUTHOR NOTES* - You may have to suspend your belief somewhat when you read this. THANKS to Carole for beta-ing! ** The phone rang at his bedside and a man rolled over to his side and groped for it in the dark. "Yeah?" he said into the receiver, his voice raspy with sleep. "Mr. Mulder--?" "Yeah--" "This is Sgt. Thomas at the police station. Do you know a Dana Scully and--?" Instantly he was wide awake, his body tense with foreboding, "What happened? Is she all right?" he interrupted urgently. "I'd rather not get into it over the phone, Mr. Mulder. Could you come down?" "Yeah. I'll be there as soon as I can!" he replied frantically into the telephone before jumping out of bed and jamming his pants on. "Honey," a husky voice said urgently from the bed. "What's going on?" He looked at the dark-haired woman sitting up in bed. "I need to go down to the police station." He was trying to zip up his pants and hang up the telephone at the same time. He didn't succeed. The telephone dropped to the floor with a clatter. "Do you want me to go with you, honey--?" He shook his head. "No, no..." He swooped down, picked up the phone, and hung it up. Then he bent his head and kissed her good-bye. "Go back to sleep, Diane," he said, "I'll call you if I need you...." Then he was running out the door. Relief flooded through him. She wasn't hurt. He could tell that much. She was sitting, rather primly in a chair, looking uncharacteristically rumpled. Her red hair going every which way. The buttons on her blouse mismatched. The bottom of her shirt pulled out... His eyes slid to the man sitting next to her. He was in the same condition. It was as if they had thrown on their clothes hastily... He frowned. Suspicion tickled in the back of his mind.... They looked up at him and smiled rather sheepishly, their faces twin mirrors of guilt. He didn't even have to hear what the police officer was saying in his ear, "...we had to bring them in, Mr. Mulder. Apparently they were putting on quite a show in the parking lot of the Briar Cafe..." The police officer sounded amused... William F. Mulder was not. He sighed, torn between exasperation, relief, and affection. "Oh, for crying out loud, Mom, Dad! Not again!" Fini Author's Note: An article about an older couple being arrested for making out in Hardee's parking lot inspired this story. I thought it was pretty funny. Anyway, I hope this story was somewhat funny to you! As always, constructive criticism welcome.
