Summary: Telling the family
Authors Notes: This is a sequel to Dreams Come True 01 and carries on directly from where that one left off. You should probably read that one first (it's available at Gossamer) but if you don't want to read it you need to know that Scully is pregnant after 1 night with Mulder. They both know (after she ended up in hospital after a family gathering) but it's time to tell the family
I'm really sorry to anyone who thinks Bill Scully Jr is a nice person -- I don't like him very much, so I'll apologize in advance.
On with the show...
Maggie Scully's house
"Dana, honey is everything alright?" Mrs. Scully asked as she opened the door. "Yeah Mom, come on in, we've got something to tell you."
Maggie entered the room and sat down in one of the armchairs. She looked very concerned. "Are you going to tell me what's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong Mom, I'm fine," replied Scully. This made Mulder chuckle. "Mulder, you could be a little more serious."
"Sorry. Mrs.. Scully, don't worry about Dana -- she's perfectly healthy." Mulder said trying to reassure her, but it was to no avail.
"If she's perfectly healthy then why is she being sick all the time?" questioned Mrs. Scully "She's being sick because........."
"Would you two stop talking about me as if I'm not here please," Scully complained. "Mom I-I'm pregnant and M-Mulder's the father."
The joy on Mrs. Scully's face was short-lived because from the doorway there was the almighty roar of "WHAT?!?!?!?!"
Scully's head spun round at the sound of the voice "Bill!"
I was woken by the sound of my sister being sick, for what I suspected wasn't the first time -- she hadn't looked well when she had been brought home last night. If I'd had my way she would have stayed in the hospital until she was 100% fit. I sat in my room until I heard the door.
I walked to the top of the stairs to see if I could see who it was. Oh, great the sorry son of a bitch is here. I really don't see why Dana hangs around with that loser. I wonder what he wants -- it looks serious. I slowly and quietly make my way down the stairs. I stop half way down when I realize my Mom is in the kitchen and she'd kill me if she knew I was listening in on their conversation. Obviously Mom also wanted to know what was going on and when she entered the living room, forgot to shut the door completely. Which is how I find myself stood here listening to the conversation.
I hear the sorry son of a bitch jump to Dana's defense. "Mrs. Scully, don't worry about Dana -- she's perfectly healthy." Yeah, that makes sense -- if she were perfectly healthy we wouldn't have spent the night of Carl's birthday in the emergency room. And then I hear Dana's voice -- the voice of reason, or so I thought.
"I-I'm pregnant and M-Mulder's the father."
What?!?!?! She did not just say that!!!!! Pregnant and by Mulder. That sorry son of a bitch knocked up my sister. My anger builds up and I find I can no longer control it. Before I know what I'm doing I hear myself shouting, "WHAT?!?!?!?!
"Save it, Day, I don't want to hear it. I only want to know one thing -- when did you become a slut?"
At this both Mulder and Mrs. Scully were on their feet and were about to rip into Bill, but Mrs. Scully got there first, "William Scully, how dare you speak to your sister in that manner. Apologize immediately."
"Don't tell me you approve of this... this..." Bill couldn't think of the right word ."this... situation. I mean Dana's actions haven't been those of a good Catholic girl, now have they?"
"You're right Bill, but what kind of Catholic, and Mother for that matter would I be if I let my daughter down and didn't support her in the decisions she makes regarding this child?"
"I don't believe this, this is bullshit!" He was shouting now but he didn't really care -- he was so angry he was sure his blood was boiling, "Am I the only one who can see that this is a mistake, the biggest mistake Dana's ever made?"
Suddenly Scully felt a calming presence enter the room, she looked up and saw that it was her younger brother Charlie. "What on earth is going on down here, at this rate you'll wake the whole neighborhood!"
Mulder seemed to stiffen at the presence of Scully's other brother. Scully sensed Mulder's anxiety and turned to face him. Her eyes said what her lips didn't dare Don't worry, Charlie's not a prick like Bill Mulder smiled at this but, unfortunately for him Bill picked up on it.
"Do you think this is funny Mr. Mulder? You knock up my baby sister and then have the audacity to laugh about it in front of me." Mulder was going to reply with some quick-witted remark but didn't get the chance.
Charlie got there first and what he said summed up exactly what he was feeling. "Just shut the fuck up Bill." Then he turned to his sister. "Day, are you alright?"
Mulder had expected her to answer with her usual I'm fine, so what she said took him by surprise. "To be honest I don't know. I was so happy. But then Bill came in and spoilt it all!" She sounded like a little girl. His heart ached to go and comfort her but Charlie already had that in hand. His arms were around her, soothing her as she cried. That should be me doing that he thought.
He then heard Charlie whispering to his sister that everything would be okay. That he was here now and was going to take care of her. That was the last straw; Mulder quickly left the room trying not to cry.
Mulder went straight through the front door, and headed towards his car. He wasn't aware he had been followed until Mrs. Scully's voice stopped him dead in his tracks. "Fox, where are you going?"
"Home. It's obvious that I'm not needed here!" he snapped.
"What on earth do you mean by that? Of course you're needed -- you're the father of Dana's child."
"That's as maybe but Dana doesn't need me, not with Charlie around to comfort and support her."
"Do you really think that Charlie's support can compare to yours? Oh Fox, don't feel unwanted -- Dana and Charlie have always been close. They were closer to each other than they were to either Missy or Bill. I suppose it's because they were the youngest. Charlie is the only person I know that Dana will cry in front of." Mulder was quite shocked by this -- he couldn't imagine Scully crying in front of anyone. Now he felt really stupid -- he had been jealous of Scully's brother.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Scully, I guess I just felt a little insecure, these last two days have taken their toll quite a bit."
Mrs. Scully smiled "I know what you mean, Fox, and unlike my eldest son I am really happy that you and Dana have finally admitted your true feelings, although I am a little disappointed that Dana didn't tell me you two were an item."
Mulder was just deciding whether or not to explain to Mrs. Scully that they had only been together for one night, when Charlie emerged from the house. "Mr. Mulder, Dana's asking for you -- she says she wants to go home." Charlie walked over to Mulder and offered his hand, "As we didn't get a chance to be properly introduced and as your practically family now -- I'm Charlie, Dana's younger brother."
Mulder smiled, "It's nice to finally meet you. I was beginning to think Dana had made you up so I wouldn't think that she was the baby of the family. By the way as you're so big on introductions, I'm Mulder your sister's sorry son of a bitch of a partner."
This made Charlie chuckle, "Don't worry I don't believe all the things Bill tells me about you -- I prefer to listen to Day. Now get in there before she gets really mad."
Mulder entered the living room hoping to find World War 3 breaking out but all he found was Scully, alone, sitting on the couch quietly sobbing.
He rushed over to her, "Ssh, ssh, it's okay, I'm here now." He found himself mirroring Charlie's words, which he thought was quite ironic.
"Mulder, where'd you go?"
"I needed the air," he lied "Liar, you were feeling left out weren't you?"
"Okay, you got me. I felt like a spare part, like I wasn't needed." Scully turned her head and looked at him. Her eyes were all puffy from all the crying she'd been doing.
"What, of course you're needed, you're this baby's father."
Mulder chuckled "That's exactly what your Mom said."
She smiled, "I'm not surprised, we Scully women have a lot of common sense," her face turned serious. "Mulder, I want to go home. I can't stay here, not with Bill around."
He understood completely. He didn't want to stay near Bill any longer than was necessary either. Scully was now sobbing harder, "Do y'know what he said Mulder, *sob* he said *sob* that Dad would have been *sob* disappointed in me. He really hurt me, Mulder."
Damn that idiot, he knew exactly what to say to her to upset her. "You know that's not true Scully. Your dad would have supported us and he would have doted on this baby, because he loved you." She seemed content with this for now, but Mulder had the feeling that this comment wouldn't go away so easily and for that, he could kill Bill Scully Jr. "C'mon 'Mom' lets go."
Scully smiled at this comment, just as Mulder knew she would, and she returned it with one of her own, "Okay 'Dad' I'll just go and get my stuff and say my goodbyes."
Mulder stayed seated in the living room and thought about Scully's last comment. Dad. He was going to be a Dad. No, he wasn't going to be just a Dad; he was going to be the world's best Dad.
This was his dream come true!!!!!
