Notes:  This story was written completely ignoring the fact that Scully is infertile. It was not written as a plausible scenario, but that’s what fan fiction is for… to give us what we can't have. So, enjoy! And, as always, feedback is more than appreciated, it's craved!

She awoke with a start. A shrill scream pierced the silence of the dark night. She was disoriented, confused. Her mind and body were still drowsy with sleep. Suddenly she felt an arm snake around her waist and warm lips on her neck. A familiar voice spoke, "I'll go." She turned to look at the voice's owner as his warmth left her side. She watched his retreating form as clarity returned. Her husband was off to rescue their brand new, beautiful baby girl, the sweet source of her rude awakening.

Through the baby monitor that lay on the bedside table, she knew the exact moment Mulder picked up their screaming infant. She could hear him whispering and her heart melted. He was such a wonderful father. "Hey there, little girl. What's the matter? Are you scared all alone in this big room? What do ya say we go visit mommy… keep her company?" She couldn't help the smile that played at the corner of her mouth. She eagerly waited for her husband and daughter to return.

She heard his footsteps as he approached the bedroom door. The room was bathed in blue as the moonlight filtered in through the open blinds. He walked through the door with their miracle cradled in his arms. He bounced her gently in attempt to keep her still. "She missed her mommy," he whispered as he sat down on the bed.

"Come here," she said as she pulled his arm in attempt to get him to lie next to her once more. Placing the child on his chest he willingly returned to the space he occupied earlier. Scully moved over and rested her head on Mulder's shoulder, her face just close enough to feel the warm breath of her now peaceful infant daughter. Mulder placed his arm around her while keeping the other on the baby's back, making sure she stayed in place. Scully rested her hand on top of his. Ever so often she would gently stroke the soft hair that was barely visible on the infant's head.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I should have kept her in the nursery. You need your sleep."

"I would forego sleep for the rest of my life if every moment could be like this." Her comment awarded her a gentle squeeze from her husband.

"Dana, we should give her a name soon, don't you think?"

Scully smiled and a soft laugh escaped her lips. "I know. I just don't want to give her the wrong name. It has to be perfect." She ran her fingers softly over her daughter's brow allowing one finger to slide down her tiny, perfect nose. "Mulder?"

"Hmm?"

"What would you like to name her?"

He thought for a moment. "I don’t know… I think the name 'Perfection' describes her beautifully… but we can't name her that. Unique names don't carry too well in our society. I should know." He let out a soft laugh.

Scully smiled. "It's a little presumptuous too, don't you think?"

"No," he said leaning forward to place a gentle kiss on his daughter's head, "she *is* perfect."

"It's genetic. She gets it from her father."

"Nope, she's definitely her mother's daughter."

"Why can't you take a compliment like an ordinary person and just say 'thank you'?" She smiled.

"Because I'm not ordinary." He pressed a kiss to her temple.

"That… you are not." She reached up and tousled his rumpled hair as she pressed a feather light kiss onto his mouth. "What other names do you like?"

"I honestly don't know. What about you?"

"I want her name to have special meaning… so, I was thinking that we could name her after the person who brought us together."

"You want to name her Blevins?" He couldn't resist.

"Yes." She said it without a waver in her voice, sounding completely serious.

"You're not serious."

"Oh, I am, Mulder. If it weren't for him…" She sounded as though she were at a loss for words.

"Well…"

"Mulder, if you plan on teasing me… don't be surprised if you're teased right back."

"Oh, you were teasing? I thought you had something there. I think 'Blevins Mulder' is a beautiful name. We'd still have to come up with a middle name though."

Scully reached down and pinched his side. "Ouch! What was that for?"

"Why do you always have to have the last word?"

"Because it makes me irresistible. Admit it, Scully."

"I'd have to agree with you on that. It doesn't mean I like it, though."

"I can't be perfect, sweetheart. I am only a man."

Scully smiled but tried to get back to the point at hand. "I was trying to be serious, Mulder. She does need a name."

"I'm sorry. What name were you thinking of?"

"I was thinking… I would like… to name her Samantha. I want her to carry on your sister's name."

Suddenly things became very serious. Mulder was moved. "You really want to name her Samantha?"

"I do. It's perfect."

Mulder looked down at the sleeping form resting on his chest. He had never considered naming her after his sister. Samantha had already consumed so much of his life. He would never forget her, but he wanted to focus on his new life and let the past remain where it ought… in the past. But, if it was important to Dana… then he was happy. The name meant so much more than words could describe.

"I love you, Dana."

"I love you."

"Did we just name our daughter?"

"Yes we did."

"Have any ideas for her middle name?"

"I picked her first name, it's your turn."

"I'm pulling for Dana."

"Samantha Dana? Mulder, that doesn't fit too nicely."

"You said it was my pick… Okay, fine. What about Katherine?"

"Samantha Katherine Mulder… I like it."

"Samantha Katherine Mulder it is." He now directed his comments to their sleeping daughter. "How do you like it? Samantha?"

"Her name means more than she'll ever know." She smiled at her husband who seemed to be glowing.

"We'll have to let her know then, won't we?"

"We will."

"Sweetheart?" Mulder questioned.

"Hmm?"

"What time is mom expecting us tomorrow?"

"Ten, what time is it?"

"Almost three… we better get some sleep."

"You want me to take the bab.. I mean," she smiled, "Samantha back to her crib?"

"No… she's perfect right here. And, so are you, don't move."

"I'm not moving anywhere."

"Promise?"

"Promise."
