He's working on a stack of papers pertaining to a case he's been asked to consult on and is occasionally glancing up at the examining room door. A willowy, buxom, tri-toned blonde sits down next to him. She crosses her legs allowing her already short skirt to ride up even more. She clears her throat trying to garner Mulder's attention but he just keeps plowing through the paperwork stopping only to glance up at the door again. She lays her long, slender, well-groomed hand on the chair arm closest to him and flexes her fingers, scratching at the rough upholstery with her brightly painted nails. Mulder is still oblivious to all the posturing going on in the seat next to him. Finally she can't stand his nonplus attitude any longer. "You here to see the doctor?" She purrs. Mulder looks up at the examining room door once again, "No, I'm not pregnant." The woman laughs but just a little too loudly. "I know that but I thought since you were working on some papers you might be a drug dealer waiting to see the doctor." Mulder checks the examining room door once more. "No, I arrest drug dealers." The woman laughs again and this time shoves her hand under Mulder's nose. "Hi, my name is Dallas." Mulder finally focuses on the woman and shakes her hand. "That's an interesting name." "Thanks," the woman smiles and leans in to add, "but that's not my real name. My real name is Lois." Mulder looks up at the door once more and says, "Hi Lois, my name is Dallas Mulder but my real name is Fox." Dallas laughs and leans over so her shoulder is brushing up against his. "Fox, I like that Fox. It suits you." Mulder looks down at his papers and mutters, "I haven't decided if my parents were drunk when they names me or just plain nuts, but I suspect the latter." He finally locates the paper he's been looking for in the mess that he's holding. Dallas grabs her crossed leg at the knee with both hands and chums up to him. "So Fox what did you mean when you said you arrest drug dealers?" Mulder checks out the door again then looks at his work. "I'm in law enforcement." Dallas blanches slightly but is undeterred. "I'm an exotic dancer. I'm just here for a friend who got herself into a little trouble." Mulder scans the paper he holds. "Doesn't it take two to get into that kind of trouble," he shrugs, "at least it did both times I've had to show up here." "Oh, you're waiting on someone then." Mulder looks at Dallas with that, 'you can't be that dense' look. "Yes, I am." "Oh." Dallas says dejectedly then brightens up. "A girlfriend?" "Not anymore." Mulder smiles as he checks out the door once more. Just then an older woman with a small boy toddling beside her walks into the waiting room. The woman bends down to take off the little boys' fuzzy blue coat and knit cap releasing a head of reddish-brown hair. He is dressed in a pair of brown corduroy bibs over a long sleeved striped Tee shirt and his feet are clad in little brown cowboy boots. The child spots Mulder sitting along the back wall of the waiting room and runs to him screaming, "Da-dee!" Mulder spills his papers onto the floor as the little boy lunges for him. A huge smile covers his face, "Hey buddy, did grandma bring you along?" He scoops up his son. Will points up at the hanging light fixtures above his head and says, "Wuz dat?" Maggie catches up with William. "Sorry Fox, he got away from me the minute he saw you." "That's okay," Mulder says holding the squirming child on his lap. "Any news?" Maggie asks sitting down next to him. Dallas is visibly uncomfortable at Maggie's unscheduled appearance. She tugs at her skirt, crosses her legs at the ankles and places her hands in her lap. Mulder stares at the examining room door again. "I hope everything is okay, she's been in there a long time." Maggie places a hand on his shoulder, "Sometimes these things take time Fox, which doesn't mean anything, is wrong." Mulder rubs his chin over Will's fuzzy head and stares holes in the examining room door. "I know but it doesn't make it any easier." Will is pulling Mulder's I.D. out of his suit jacket pocket. Dallas' eyes grow wide as she reads the letters 'FBI' emblazoned across the photo that the baby is now chewing on. Maggie sighs and looks at the door. "I'm sure she's fine. She's only a few days past her due date." Mulder joins Maggie in staring at the door. "I know but she is so tiny to be so big." Then he realizes what he's said and looks over at her, "You know what I mean." "Yes, I do Fox but she has the best doctors and she's in great shape. Mulder finally realizes Will is making a mess of his I.D. and takes it from the child. Will stiffens up and growls. Mulder laughs and looks down at his son, "He is so much like his mother that it's frightening." He places Will down on his feet and the baby walks around happy with his newfound freedom. Just then Mulder quickly stands up and steps past his son heading for the examining room doors where a very pregnant Scully is now standing. She's wearing what looks like an over-sized man's white dress shirt and black leggings. Her hair is pulled back with a barrette at the nape of her neck. Mulder is at her side in a few quick strides, taking her hand he leans into her and nervously asks, "Is everything okay Scully?" Before she can answer, the door behind her opens and out steps Scully's doctor. "Hello Fox. How are you?" The doctor smiles. Mulder stares at Scully then drags his eyes to the doctors, "Never mind how I am, how is Dana?" "She's fine," the doctor pats Scully on the shoulder, "she's just carrying a very stubborn baby." Mulder is visibly relieved. "Don't worry Fox, we won't let her go much longer." William spots his mother and father and runs toward them. The doctor swings Will up into his arms. "Well, who do we have here?" Will stares at the doctor with large, blue eyes not quite sure what to make of the stranger that is holding him. Suddenly he launches himself toward Scully but Mulder intercepts him. "No William, mom can't hold you yet but we hope it won't be too much longer," he says looking down at Scully. Maggie walks up, "Dana, is everything okay?" Scully smiles at the throng hovering over her. "I'm fine mom, we're fine. It's just taking a little longer than it did with Will." She reaches over to run her fingers through the little boys' hair. He responds by leaning into her hand and shrieking with laughter. The doctor looks at Maggie. "Okay everyone settle down, Dana's fine. She's just a few days past due." Then he turns to Scully, "And YOU, take it easy, let them help you and call me if anything changes otherwise I'll see you on Friday." Scully blushes and smiles. "I will. I promise." The doctor disappears back into the examining room. Maggie takes William from Mulder and walks the little boy back to the chairs where their coats are piled up. Dallas is picking up the papers Mulder spilled earlier. She looks up just in time to see Maggie and William approaching. "Oh, ah, I thought Fox might need these," Dallas says nervously as she stands up towering over Maggie. "Thank you. I'm sure Fox will appreciate that." Dallas taps the pages into a neat stack and nods her head toward Mulder and Scully who are standing at the scheduling desk. "That your daughter?" Maggie stops trying to zip up the jacket on the active toddler and looks back at Scully, "Yes she is." "She's pretty," Dallas says as she continues to stare at the partners then softly adding, "and lucky." Maggie finally finishes dressing her grandson and gives him a little push, "Okay baby go back to mom and dad." William takes off under Maggie's watchful eye. He reaches his parents and pats Mulder's leg then puts both hands up. Mulder looks down and smiles at his son then bends down to pick him up. Scully reaches over to grasp Will's small hand and pats him on the back while she continues to talk to the woman behind the counter. Maggie turns to look at Dana. "Yes, they're both lucky and blessed." Scully beams up at her son while Mulder strokes her back. "She wasn't supposed to be able to have children but here we are," Maggie laughs. "They look happy," Dallas says wistfully. "They are." Mulder ushers Scully back to where Maggie and Dallas are standing. "All done," Scully sighs. Mulder sets Will down so he can help Scully into her coat then takes her hand, "Scully this is Dallas, she's waiting on a friend." "Hi Dallas, nice to meet you." Scully softly smiles at the woman who towers over her. "Nice to meet you too, you sure have a cute little boy." Scully looks over at William who is clomping around in his cowboy boots. "Thanks." Just then a shorthaired, short-skirted, small woman runs up to Dallas and grabs her arm. "It's okay," she excitedly says, "it was a false positive." Dallas looks down at her friend, "That's great, I'm happy for you." Her friend is surprised by the melancholy in Dallas' voice. "Happy? You sure don't sound like it." Dallas looks at Mulder and Scully and smiles, "Well nice to meet all of you." She turns to go and realizes she still has Mulder's papers in her hand. "Oh Fox these are yours." She hands the papers to Mulder who takes them saying thanks. Mulder scoops up Will then takes Scully's hand. "We better get going." Maggie follows them out the door. Dallas continues to stare as they walk out of sight. Her friend tosses on her jacket. "What is it Dal'?" "Nothing, just wondering." Dallas puts on her leather coat as she and her friend walk to the door. ~ The End ~
