Men were seated in the room like pieces on a chess board. They sat there motionless, waiting. Some drank tea while glaring at others is the room. A man entered only known to others as Cigarette Smoking Man. His role in Mulder and Scully's search for the truth was to set bureaucratic roadblocks. He used silence for his answers, denial being his truth. "We have located her." "Where is she?" "In Virginia," he answered, taking a drag from his cigarette. "She has found Agent Mulder." "This was not supposed to happen. She was never to leave the colony." "Yes, but she has Mulder's sister's protection." "What does the colony say?" "I have not heard a response from him." "And the action you have chosen?" asked Well-Manicured Man, approaching him. "Terminate her." Well-Manicured Man's eyes swelled in anger. "You are taking actions against the discussion of the group." "They are in the best interests of the group." "They are not! Do you have any idea how the colony will take this?" "It will lie in the hands of Agent Mulder if he wants his sister back. There was silence. "Unless she is working with Samantha." "You have a tendency to undermine the long term consequences of a situation. If she dies and the colony asks for the accountable party, I will put you forward as the sole person." "Really?" "And I am not the only one who feels that way." *********************************** Alexandria, Virginia 9:14pm Hannah sat up and listened to the sound outside the door. It was the sound of a gun cocking that disturbed her. There was a rush of adrenaline. Panic. A message was transmitted that someone was following her, out to kill her. She had nothing to fight back with. There was a brief thought of running for the kitchen, but she would make too much noise. There was nothing to do but sit there and wait. In a flash the door opened and a figure stood in the doorway. She heard a hand trying to find a switch. Her head was spinning and the thought of running may not have been a bad idea. The light came on and a man stood before her with a gun. Hannah got up and tried to run. "Hold it." She froze. "Who are you?" "I am," she breathed, without moving. "looking for Fox Mulder." Silence. "Who are you?" Hannah turned to him. The man closed the door behind him. "I am Fox Mulder." "Prove it." Mulder reached into his pocket and pulled out his badge. He held it at a distance as she leaned forward to see it. "Who are you?!" She stood before him, not afraid of the gun anymore. "I am Hannah Parker," she said, extending her hand. Mulder dropped his gun. "Please, we have to leave. Someone is going to kill me." "Who?" "I don't know. I thought it was you." Mulder looked at her strangely. Somehow he felt he had heard things like this before. "How do I know that you aren't going to hurt me?" "I'm not armed." Hannah heard footsteps approaching the door. "That's him." She pulled Mulder into the kitchen, against the wall where they could not be seen. She listened to the footsteps as they entered the apartment. The light from the living room cast a shadow that she followed with her eyes. "Who is. . . " Putting her hand over his mouth she looked around and then saw a frying pan hanging on the wall. She quickly grabbed it and waited. Mulder was amazed at how quickly she moved. X was right, maybe she was an angel in disguise. There was no hesitation in her voice, her actions, and how she carried herself. It was as if she was trained to know fear, but not to feel it. The man moved through the apartment. There had been a struggle. She may have broken in and taken Mulder against his will. He assumed she was armed and dangerous. He was not far off. The two stood there against the kitchen wall. Hannah turned to him with a blank expression. Releasing her hand from his mouth, she signaled him not to say a word. She watched the shadow move closer, while gripping the pan in her hands. As she saw the man peer into the kitchen, she swung the pan and hit him in the face. He screamed and staggered backwards. Lunging forward, she hit him again. Mulder stood there in awe as he was being beaten up by someone he did not know. Hannah threw all her force into hurting him, while Mulder just watched. The man groaned, falling to the floor and dropping his gun. Hannah grabbed it pointing it at him. There was no urge in her to kill him. She did not even know how. That would go against her mission and draw more attention to the situation. "Let's go," she said. Mulder looked at her, stunned. "Come on!" Hannah grabbed his hand and took him with her out of the apartment. "Where are we going?" "I have a long story to tell you." Mulder stopped. "I've heard that before." "The government wants me dead. I will have more than them on my hands in two days if I don't get out of here." "Why me?" "I know your sister. She sent me. Come on!" She took him again with her down the stairs. Someone knows Samantha, Mulder thought. As much as he wanted to remain skeptical about whether or not she was a government informant or for real, there was something in her voice. She had trust, an innocence he warmed to. By holding his hand as they raced down the flights of stairs she wanted to trust him. Hannah was vulnerable to a world she could not remember. "Where are we going?" They reached the lobby and Hannah let go of his hand. In fear, she ran out to the sidewalk. Which way to run? Left or right? She turned around to look at Mulder. "Where are we going?" "I don't know yet. West. Out west." She felt a shock in her neck; it was where the implant was. Samantha was communicating with her. "Where west?" Running up the steps, she grabbed his hand again and looked at him. "Who are you?" "Hannah Parker." Mulder stared at her as if in a daze. "And you know Samantha?" She nodded. "Please," she said, pulling him. "There is so much to explain." Holding onto her hand tightly, Mulder followed her down the street. ******************************* 10:20pm Annapolis, Maryland Scully had been trying to get in touch with Mulder for hours. His answering machine kept picking up and the cell phone was off. She paced her apartment, noticing a different thing on the walls each time she turned. She was exhausted from the trip going from Tampa to Minneapolis to Washington in one day. Why were they called there? What was so significant about the woman Jill Morris saw? "Oh my God," she said. She grabbed her keys and jacket. What if Mulder headed back to Minnesota to try to find her? Getting into her car she sped off to Mulder's. For a moment, she thought that Mulder could be right. What if this mystery woman saw something to do with top security information? She refused to believe that she was a possible abductee. Maybe Tyler Ruckins knew more than she should have. Scully felt paranoid. She was becoming like Mulder. It had been a long drive with nothing said. Hannah felt asleep for the entire ride. She was exhausted from a busy day and culture shock. Upon arriving at the motel, she had to squint at the bright lights in front of her. While Mulder checked in, Hannah stood outside. If only Samantha could see this, she thought. Everything was strange to her. The lights, sounds, and colors made her feel like a child on Christmas morning. But it was the sky that fascinated her the most. Hours ago she was up there, somewhere in the stars. "223," Mulder shouted to a dazed Hannah. He watched her stare. It was as if he could not talk to her. "Hannah?" She turned to look at him. He was standing in the doorway waving to her. "Yes?" "You'll get a cold out there." "What's that?" Mulder smiled. She entered the motel room and shut the door. "Now," he said, pulling up a chair and signaling for her to do the same. "Tell me what you know." "About what?" she replied, adjusting herself in the chair. "About Samantha." "Oh, Sam," she smiled. "What about her?" "How is she? Where is she? What happened?" "Sam and I, among others were part of what is known as the November abductions. They. . . ." "Who is they?" "The colony and the government. They formed a pact over fifty years ago. After a thing called Roswell." Mulder leaned over the table, nodding. "And the November abductions . . ." "It was a mass abduction of children to mold in their fashion. However a lot of them didn't make it." "What do you mean?" "Tests. Some of them went wrong. Hundreds were killed to put them out of their suffering." Hannah got choked up. Mulder touched her hand. "They made us watch it. Sam and I were among only fifty that made it. We had gotten to know some of them. I couldn't sleep for weeks." ************************* Scully arrived at Mulder's apartment to see a block full of cars. MIB's were standing near Mulder's apartment door. "I'm sorry ma'am, we can't let you in." "I am looking for Agent Mulder." Cigarette Smoking Man came into the hallway with the man whom Hannah had beaten up. "Where is Agent Mulder?!" "That is what we would like to know." "I haven't been able to get through to him. Obviously you have." "He is with someone who is important to us." "The woman Jill Morris saw." He took a drag from his cigarette and stared at her. "You know where he could have gone?" Scully seethed. "How can I know where he is when I can't reach him. That's why I am here to find him before he does something stupid." He looked at her with no response. "I take it he already has." Scully walked back to her car, tired. Her body felt like it had been exhausted of everything. Sitting in her car, she leaned back. There goes Mulder, she thooght. Thinking with his heart and not his head. Then her phone rang. "Scully." "Scully, where are you?" "I'm outside your place. That Cancerman and his men are ransacking your place." "I don't remember sending him a party invitation." Scully started driving away. "Dammit Mulder! They know you're with her." "I figured that." "Mulder, who is she?" "I can't tell you right now." "Mulder!!" "Scully, they're going to be watching you." She sighed. "Be careful, Mulder." "I will." Mulder looked back at Hannah as he hung up the phone. "They are going to see if your partner leads them to us." "And when they do . . . " "They'll kill me," she said with no fear. "Back of the neck?" he said pointing to his neck. "Huh?" "They have to kill you that way." She laughed. "I am not a clone, Mulder. I am not a bounty hunter. I'm an abductee who has returned momentarily to do a job for a friend." Mulder sighed relief. "What are the clones for? I have heard about a date being set for colonization." "Yes." "Have they cloned you?" "No, I was not part of that. Sam was, in two ways." "How?" "You have seen the agricultural farm in Canada." "Yes." "And the Gregors." Mulder nodded. "They were not properly approved. As much as the government here does things behind your back, so does the colony. They occasionally have problems in . . . . diplomacy. With miscommunication and conflicts, they were ended." "But Samantha is alive?" "She sent me." "Why doesn't she return?" Hannah got up and walked over to one of the beds. "Mulder, I have a little over two days to get to the location where the colony will take me back. If I fail I will become part of the killing season." "But . . .why? What killing season" "I will answer your questions to the best of my knowledge, but I need rest. It's been a long day. And you need rest as well. It is your responsibility to protect me." "From who?" "The government." With that Hannah crawled under the covers and fell asleep. It was far more comfortable than Tyler Ruckins bed. She returned the action for at least five minutes before a word was spoken. She looked at him as if they were involved in a staring match. Scully knew what he wanted to know, and she was not about to give in without some answers. "Do you have any idea where Agent Mulder is?" "No sir." "Have you spoken to him?" "Yes," she said, hesitating. "but he told me not to do anything. He didn't tell me where he is." "Does he have Hannah Parker with him?" "Who? Skinner looked at her with a cold stare. "He did not say, sir." She was lying, but at least she admitted that they spoke to each other. "Are you sure?" "Yes, sir. I asked." "And?" "Nothing sir." Cigarette Smoking Man walked in to the room and sat down next to Scully. She was not surprised that he was in on this. Part of her started fuming, but by griping the arms of the chair, she was able to control herself. "Do you know who this woman is?" "No." "She is very important to us." "Us? Or you?" "That is irrelevant." "I think it is. I am not going to dig information for your personal satisfaction." "She is an abductee. It is important to everyone. The knowledge she has could effect everything." "To kill her? Is that what you want?" "If he doesn't get to her in time, there is someone else who can." "Who?" Silence. "Who?!!" ******************************* 9:22am Mulder drove the rental he picked up back to the hotel to get Hannah. He felt uneasy about leaving her alone, but she insisted. Besides, as she reminded him, she had a gun. For the first time, he was getting answers from questions he had been asking for years. It brought a smile to his face. Hannah was sitting in the room as Mulder arrived. She was getting tired of the clothes she had taken from Tyler Ruckins's place. They slowed her down and were beginning to smell. Looking out the window, she saw Mulder approach the door with two bags. She opened the door and peered her head out. "Morning." "Hello," she replied, opening the door. Mulder put one bag on the table, the other one on the bed. "What's this?" "Look." Hannah walked over to the bag on the bed. Inside there were gray sweatpants, a blue T-shirt, socks, a cheap pair of sneakers, underwear, and a sportsbra. The last of these items she held up curiously. "What's this?" "A bra." She looked confused. "Where do I put it on?" "Here," he said, signaling to the area where it was worn. "Ahhhhh," she said. "Ours are in our uniforms. It's a funny looking thing." Mulder laughed as she walked over to the other bag which was smaller. Inside was something she needed. Food. Hannah started eating the muffin and egg sandwiches at a rapid speed. She had never eaten anything since she arrived. There was also a container of orange juice and hash browns. Mulder watched her eat with a smile. "We have to go soon." She nodded with a mouthful of food. Within the hour, Hannah was showered and dressed, Mulder had paid for the room, and the two were on the road again. "So tell me about Samantha." "She's fine." Mulder looked at her anxiously. "Unlike you I see her often so the fact that you have not seen her in twenty three years is strange. Sam is fine. There is not much to say. When she was eighteen, the times I saw her were decreased." "How?" "Because of your father's work with the Department of Defense, she was a person they had to isolate, protect. They decided to put her in a diplomatic position." "So she works with the government. She helps with the cover- ups." "No. She makes sure the communication between the colony and the government stay smooth." "But she knows what is going on?" "No. She is kept at a great distance. They . . . shelter her." "And you? What is your role?' "I'm medical security. I bring the abductees that have tests done into the room to the doctor. Pretty boring job, compared to Sam's." Mulder nodded and kept driving. He tried to be calm, but all of this was overwhelming. Hannah felt a twitch in the back of her neck. It was the implant. She was getting a message from Samantha. "Farmington." "What?" "Farmington, New Mexico." "What about it?" "It is where they will take me back." "How do you know this?" Hannah tilted her head forward and pushed her hair off the back of her neck. There was a scar similar to the one Scully had on the back of her neck. "Someone is talking to you?" "Sort of. It's like a radio transmission in my head. Something for the medical journals, I guess." Mulder sat there fascinated. He had found a gold mine of information. ******************** 1:21pm Annapolis, Maryland She had been sent home, as simple as that. Scully sat on her couch and watched Jenny Jones. Unfortunately, it was about abductees. Where was Mulder going with this Hannah Parker character? What if she was a decoy from the government that he has fallen into a trap? Picking up the phone, she dialed his cellular phone. "Mulder." "Mulder, it's me." "Scully, where are you?" "Home," she said, gazing around her room as if it were a prison. "Skinner sent me home." "Why?" "They're waiting for you to come back. That Cancerman wants her dead." "Because she knows too much." "Or she could be a decoy. It could be another trap to make you believe." "Scully . . ." "Mulder, listen to me. They are watching me. They are waiting by your place." "I won't be there for awhile. I'm kinda having a Kerouacian adventure." "Where are you?!" "West. At least we are heading there." "Let me meet you." "Can't do that." "Mulder!!!" "Listen, Scully. I am doing his for you to keep you out of this." "Don't worry, I'm already in it. Her name is Hannah Parker. Am I correct?" "Scully!" "I'm not staying here." "Please Scully!!" She hung up. He had always ditched her. He had to in order to protect her but she was getting hounded for things she did not know. She was the one who got followed and blamed for his actions. As she grabbed her coat to go, there was a knock at the door. When she opened it, X stood before her. "I must warn you of what might happen, Agent Scully." Scully stood there staring at a man whose judgment she had questioned too many times before. Her eyes were cold toward him. She had to find her partner and knew he was going to give her vague clues. "He must protect her." "Who's Hannah Parker?" Silence. "How did you know that I was here and communicating with Mulder?" X gave her no answer. "Who is she?!" "Mulder's answer to the truth. Interfere with it and it will die." "Interfere with what?" "The truth. She holds the truth." ""The truth he wants to know or have the government planted her to mislead him?" Again no answer. "Do you know where he is? Where he is heading?" "He's heading for Farmington, New Mexico. The others don't know that yet." "Thank you," she said, pushing past him. "You leave for there," he hollered at her. "and they will follow you." "Then I will take another way and mislead them." "Good luck trying." ******************* Gorman Central Hotel Little Rock, Arkansas 6:06pm Hannah looked at the television in a daze. Two cars involved in a chase with guns was taking place, and she followed its movements with intensity. She had no memory of what one was. It was a distracting thing that she couldn't move her eyes off of while eating in the hotel restaurant. Mulder had to order her food. Not that he was being a gentleman, as the waitress had imagined, it was that she had no idea of what was on the menu. He found ziti to be a much easier choice than spaghetti. "So what is this thing called the killing season?" he asked, trying to turn her attention away from the television. She turned to look at him and her food. It was obvious that she wanted to watch the moving light on the wall. "It happens once a year. You see, they abduct people and they do experiments and stuff. Well," she said filling her mouth with food. "if they are severely damaged by it or get a form of cancer that will eventually kill them, they return them to earth. "Now, everyone who leaves is happy. They think they are getting their freedom. But when they return they get twenty four hours with their families and such, until the colony sends a bounty hunter down to kill them. Kind of a last wish type of thing." Hannah gulped down some iced tea and continued. "He, the bounty hunter, will not leave until he has killed everyone that was returned. Even if it takes him months, he will find them." "And you guys think this is a sport?" "No. It is a, what is the word, cleansing according to the colonists. I don't believe it. I mean, we don't watch the murders." "And if you don't return in a certain time . . ." "In Farmington? I will be marked as well through the implant and my identity will be given to him." Mulder nodded as Hannah returned to watching the television. "Then we better be going." She looked at her watch, courteously of Mr. Ruckins. "Yes." Mulder paid the bill and the two headed back to the room. "How will you know exactly where to meet them?" "They'll tell me when I get there." He nodded and turned to a set of bright headlights that had been bothering him. "Excuse me?" a man's voice said while he stepped out of his car. The man got out of the car and headed toward them. It was the man from Mulder's apartment. Hannah knew from the sound of his voice and began to run. She did not care if Mulder was behind her or not, she had to run. "Stop!" the man shouted to her. Mulder began to run after her. He recognized the face too. Hannah ran behind the hotel and up a hill in the back that led to a flat plain. She was in the middle of nowhere. Standing there, she turned to see Mulder catching up to her. "Hannah!" Mulder was came up behind her, as was the man who had drawn his gun to fire at her. "I said stop!" Mulder grabbed her hand and pulled her off course. Looking both ways, he saw a train station nearby. To the left they were going to go toward a railroad station. "I think it is time we used other means of transportation," Mulder said. "To where?" "West," he smiled. The man fired at them repeatedly, while Mulder forced her and himself to duck. Looking up he saw a sign. Albuquerque. "That train will take us within hours of Farmington." "You sure?" "Yep," Mulder said, chasing after the train. He jumped up as it was gaining speed. Hannah was running after his hand while the man kept firing. "Come on!" She stretched out her arm, but couldn't reach. "I can't." Mulder pushed himself halfway out of the compartment. "Grab on to my arm!" This time, Hannah was successful. The two pulled themselves in the car while the man just stood there and watched them get away. ********************* Dulles Airport 7:21pm Scully purchased her ticket and made her way to the gate. She was going to make a stop at El Paso and then drive eight hours from there to search for her partner. She really did not believe this woman, Hannah Parker, was legit. This had to be a plan from the government that Mulder was to fall for, just like the clones that were not his sister and the E.B.E that made them go cross country to find nothing. It would be a dead end. She just hoped her partner was not going to be a part of it. Sitting at the gate, she noticed some men were watching her. When they looked up at the sign that said El Paso, they looked confused and kept walking. The she noticed something strange. Cigarette Smoking Man and his men were heading toward the plane bound for Albuquerque. They knew where Mulder was headed. But her flight was sooner, much sooner than hers. She had a small window to get there before they did, at least Scully hoped.. She knew they were going to make a fool of him. Hannah Parker would turn out to be a fake. Before she could think much further, her cell phone rang. "Scully." "Scully, it's me." "Where are you?" "On a train. We're going to . . ." "Farmington. I know, I have been told." "Where are you?" "On my way out there. That Cancer Man guy is going on a flight to Albuquerque. He might be there to meet you." "Damn. There was a man who tried to kill Hannah. He followed us." "Mulder, I think she has been planted here by the colony. She is to make you believe.' "No, Scully," he said, looking at Hannah who was sitting on the other end of the car. "She is real. It makes sense." "To you. What if your sister was coerced to sending her here with false information." "She is legit. She has the same mark on her neck as you do. Only hers acts as a radio." Scully sighed. "Protect yourself, okay. I will meet you out there." "You can meet her for yourself." "I am looking forward to that." Note: This part was inspired by the movie "Starman". (i.e. draw your own conclusions) all comments to SMurphy@aol.com ******************************** The Killing Season (5/6) By Sharon Harkins-Murphy The train calmed Hannah a little. Maybe it was the humming sound that reminded her of what she knew of as home. She knew that time was against her and she still had not asked Mulder what Samantha wanted her to. Everything had gone by so fast, part of her did not want to go back. She felt safe here. Being thrown in to this world she had forgotten and then to be take back. She closed her eyes and pictured what life would be like back in the colony. She did not want any part of it. But if she succeeded in her mission, she would get this life back. She could start everything over again. Looking across the car, she saw that Mulder was sleeping like a baby. So this was the person she had been told about for all of these years. Shaking her head, she got up and walked toward the partially open door. The train was shifting on the tracks which threw her off balance. It also woke Mulder up. "Hannah?" "I'm here." She walked over to where he was sitting up and sat next to him. "Mulder?" "Yes," he said, rubbing his eyes. "I need to tell you something. Samantha wanted me to tell you this, but in the middle of all the chasing and answering your questions, I had almost forgotten." "What?" "She wants you to leave the FBI." "What?!" "She says it is the only way to guarantee that she can return. Your work is interfering with her return. You have to leave the Bureau." "I can't." "Mulder, my mission is to be considered a failure otherwise. The consequences would be unbelievable." "You want my word?" "Yes." Mulder leaned his head against the wall. "Okay." "Okay? That is a promise?" "Yes." Silence. "Hannah?" "Yes?" "What is life like for you in the colony? I mean, what do you do for fun? I've been asking you all of these serious questions when the strangest thing for me is what you do outside of medical security." "I don't get much of a life." "Do you go to bars or clubs?" "What?" "Gathering places where people have a few drinks and talk to others. . .. " "Nope." "Do you date?" "Nope." "So you have arranged marriages?" "Nope." Mulder looked at her strange, yet this mundane lifestyle did not bother her at all. It was common to her and what he talked about was, well . . .weird. "So there is no sex?" "Nope." "No sex?!" "Mulder, we have no need to procreate when you people down here do it for us." He sat there and thought about the logic behind what she had just said. It made life for them very convenient. All they had to do was work day in and day out. "But what about hormones?" "What about them?" Mulder stared at her. "We have them. Just like everyone else, then men have testosterone and the woman have estrogen. Our biological patterns are the same. For us, the lack of sex is a learned behavior." "Brainwashed?" She laughed. "No. We are told it is not necessary and we listen. There is no need to rebel, no need to go against what we have learned because we have had no outside influence to tell us." "What about abductees? What about Tyler Ruckins?" "They learn as well. Tyler was taken for reasons I don't know. I was sent down when he was taken up. That was how I landed in Minnesota." "Who would know?" "The colonists." "But you are a colonist." "No, I am a worker. I'm an abductee that will stay there until I'm no longer needed." "Then?" "I will return. But the decision won't be my own." "So, you're under their complete control." Hannah nodded. Mulder looked at her. Here was this innocent woman who was sacrificing her life to get to him and tell him the truth. He wanted to save her from what could happen when she returned. What if they found out that Samantha had arranged her to be sent down? Then his only link would be killed. Yet if she did not return, she would die, no matter how hard he would try to protect her. It broke his heart. She was a pawn in the game. He put his arm around her and held her close. Within a few hours, she would be gone. "Mulder, why are you holding me?" She looked up into his eyes that were filled with tears. "I don't want you to go." "But I have to. I am the only link you have to your sister. To insure her return, you have to let me return." Mulder held her closer, putting both arms around her. He was her protector, her guardian. "How much longer do we have?" She looked at his watch. "Twelve hours." A tear rolled slowly down his face. She reached out to wipe it away. Hannah could not understand why he was crying. In her eyes, he was gaining knowledge about his sister. But to him, she felt he would be losing someone again. He looked down at her blank expression, the moonlight shining on it making her look like an angel. She was his angel. Smiling, he leaned down and kissed her. This is the conclusion. Inside was the man who had been following Mulder and Hannah across country. There were no words spoken between the two of them for a few minutes. "Where are they?" "On a train that should be arriving within the hour." He took another drag from his cigarette. "They will not make it back. At least she won't. I have called in troops to surround Farmington to be on the look out for them. Another failed effort to reveal the truth." "What if she has told him the truth?" "A truth can always be turned into a lie. You should know that from how you and I live." ******************** Two hours later Scully arrived at the airport and got her rental. She drove along the highway to Farmington. It felt like the middle of no where. There was a part of her that did not want to come out here. Mulder in the boxcar, the digital tape, all of those brought panic to her mind. She was alone here on the highway to chase something she did not believe and save her partner from humiliation by the government. But she was not alone. Up ahead she saw patrol cars. But they were not patrol cars. They were military, the government was waiting for them. She stopped the car in the middle of the road and leaned her head against the wheel. Then she thought of something. What if she could warn Mulder of what was going to happen? She picked up her cell phone and dialed. His phone was off. "Damn!" Scully turned her car around and began to head the other way. This was the only way into Farmington from the airport or the train station. If she met up with his car before he got here she might be able to help him figure out another way. There were no other cars on the road, so finding him would not be a problem. She just hoped she was early enough to save them. ************************ Mulder and Hannah were on their way to Farmington when they noticed that there was no one else around. She seemed scared as to what was happening, as if she could sense the danger that was near. "The government is here," she said. "Where?" "I'm not sure, but Samantha is worried that I might not make it." "Tell her we are going to make it." Hannah looked at him with a shocked expression. "Mulder, the colonists will not wait. If I am not there at that moment, it is all over." He stepped harder on the accelerator. Up ahead, he saw a car coming up from the other way blinking its headlights at him. It was Scully. Stopping the car, Scully got out and ran over to Mulder's car waving her arms at him. "Mulder!!" "This is your partner?" "Yep." The two got out of the car and walked toward her. "Mulder, don't go this way!" "Scully, it's the only way." She caught her breath and turned to see Hannah standing on the other side of the car. A blank expression stared back at her. "This is Hannah, I assume." "Yes," he said pointing to her. Hannah continued to stare at her. "There is a full military line up ahead. They are waiting for you two. Find another way in." "There is none." Behind them a car came up and stopped. A kid got out of the car walked toward them. Mulder had seen him before. He was Albert Hoistein's grandson who had taken him to the quarry. "I need a ride into Farmington," he said. "You are the FBI man?" Mulder nodded. "Sure." Mulder looked at Hannah. "There will be two of us in need of a ride to . . . ." "The quarry," Hannah replied. "Mulder you can't get it in, they'll see you." "Not if we ride in the trunk." The four looked at each other. "Okay," the kid said, opening the trunk to the car. "What about me, Mulder?" "Stay out of this." "You're not ditching me again!" He came up to her and put his hands on her shoulders. "Scully, this is my quest, my sister, my truth I need to see through. I can't risk your safety for my battles." Walking away, Scully stood there and watched the two get in the trunk together and be closed in. "Bring him back," she said to the kid. "I'll wait here." He got into the car and started off. Scully tapped the trunk as it drove away. ******************* The security at the edge of Farmington was close in resemblance to martial law in effect. There were five people at the barricades when the kid arrived with the car. He slowed down and rolled down his window. "Where are you going?" "Home." The man looked at the car for anything that might be strange. Another guy looked at the trunk. Nothing suspicious to make them look any further, the man signaled that they could go ahead. "Go ahead." The car went ahead into the town that was quiet and reserved. The dustclouds came up from the tires as the kid drove home under no suspicions. He drove to his house, not far from where the military were and let Mulder and Hannah out of the trunk. "Where do you have to go?" "The quarry." "I can take you there now." Mulder looked around. "It would be safer if we took the car," he said. "We don't want anyone else to interfere." The kid looked at him. "I don't have many points on my license." He gave Mulder the keys. "One piece?" "One piece." They got into the car and headed off for the quarry. "They are almost here Mulder. Hurry!" He sped fast as he could up the mountain to the quarry. Hannah stared out over the rocks to see where they were going to meet her. "There!" She pointed just below the ridge of one of the quarries. A signal had been given as to where they would take her back. Mulder turned the car and started to hear downwards. Above them Mulder could hear a helicopter approaching. "Damnit! They are following us!" "I take it not too many people drive a car into the quarry?" "No." Mulder tried to steady the car as he headed to where she pointed. The two were jolted around in their car. Hannah kept bracing herself on the dashboard. The noise above them got louder. Cigarette Smoking Man and his men were closing in. But something strange was happening. In the distance, Hannah saw dark clouds rolling in as if it was going to rain, but it was not going to rain. A smile came across her face. They were coming for her. "Stop the car, Mulder." "What?" "I said, stop the car." "But we are . . . ." She looked at him with the blank expression of seriousness that he had grown used to in the past two days. He stopped the car and Hannah jumped out toward the open area of the quarry. "Hannah!" Chasing after, he too started to notice the darkness in the sky. They were coming. "Hannah!!" She ignored him, climbing over rocks and slopes to get to the opening in the middle. By now it was almost as if it was nighttime. The helicopter noise stopped. It was dark and even though Hannah could see nothing, she looked up. Out of the sky came a bright light that lit up everything for miles. Through the light came a ship that slowly descended above Hannah. She turned to see Mulder was looking up too. "Mulder." He looked over to her. As the ship hovered, Hannah walked over to Mulder. It felt like everything in time had stopped, when in fact it had. "I have to say good-bye." "I wish you didn't . . . ." "I know. But for Samantha's sake." He nodded. The two stared at each other for a moment. She never knew what saying good-bye was. Then he embraced her. There was a part of her that knew good-byes were not always good. Looking up at him, she saw tears in his eyes. "Don't cry. Samantha and will return soon. You can't give up that faith." "I know," he repeated. She kissed him gently and then released herself from his embrace. "Good-bye, Fox Mulder." "Good-bye, Hannah Parker." With that, she stepped backwards watching him wave goodbye. She returned the hand gesture and then turned toward the light. And then she was gone. Within moments, the ship was absorbed back into the light and the darkness fell away. There was no evidence anything had ever been here. *********************** "Noooooo!!!!!!" he shouted from the helicopter. Cigarette Smoking Man learned that there had been a loss of five minutes. The colony had come to save her and they blocked the government's chance at winning. She had gotten through to Mulder. The colony had beated him at its own game. He quickly lit up another cigarette. *********************** A car traveled down a desolate highway. Up ahead were two cars on opposite sides of the road. It was as if they were abandoned. The car stopped and a man got out, then the car pulled away. "Mulder!" Scully got out of her car and went toward Mulder. He was tired and weak. She looked at him and tears welled up in his eyes. "I am one step closer but I feel so far away from her." "Did she tell you the truth?" "Yes," he said, with his voice breaking up. "But she didn't know everything. I was so close. I wanted to go to the light with her. To be with Samantha if I was that close. . . . " He put his head down. "You are closer. You succeeded. You brought her back." "She's still not here. That is my failure." Mulder walked to his car and began to drive off. Scully was not too far behind him. *********************************** Hannah was in a white room. She sat there as still as possible. Samantha was in a meeting and could not meet her. When the doors opened, Jeremiah Smith stood before her. "Good job." "I succeeded?" "Yes. Although, Mulder did not keep your word about leaving his job, you have instilled a spirit in him." She nodded. "Your tests have come back strange though." "What do you mean?" "It would be the funniest thing to me but, it looks as if you are pregnant. That wouldn't be possible." Hannah looked down. She knew why. "The government is set out to destroy Agent Mulder and his work. This will give them what they fear the most and cannot touch." "What is that?" "The next generation of the Mulder family." ************************************ Well that's all folks . . . .there will be another story later on the return of Samantha, Hannah, and baby Mulder. I am working on an interesting story line for that one . . . give me a few months . . .
