Author's Notes: I love babyfic, and I really wish they would have done more with Emily on the show. This is my way of exploring some of
Mulder's thoughts about Scully and their new baby.

The alarm clock read 3 a.m. but Dana Scully Mulder was blissfully unaware of it. She slept on as Fox Mulder slid out of bed and stumbled down the hall, toward the sound of an impatient wail. Usually Scully was the one who took care of these early morning feedings, but Mulder wanted to do it this time. He turned into the room right down the hall and picked up the crying miracle that was his daughter. "Well now, Miss Paige Emily Mulder, what seems to be the trouble here? I bet somebody's hungry," Mulder said in a teasing voice, as he placed his tiny daughter on his shoulder and rubbed her back soothingly.

Mulder and Scully had been married for almost two years when they learned Dana was pregnant with Paige. She'd been told so many years before that she would never be able to have a child of her own, so everyone was shocked, but pleasantly surprised to hear of the news. At first Mulder and Scully were worried that this might somehow be related to the doings of the men that were always lurking in the shadows. But the pregnancy progressed normally, and the Mulders decided to take this miracle for what it was. A gift from God, and they cherished it. And on March 23rd at 2 in the morning, Paige Emily Mulder was born with her mother's startling blue eyes and the beginnings of strawberry blond hair.

Mulder walked down the stairs to the kitchen of the two story house he and Scully had bought shortly after they were married. He held Paige carefully in the crook of his arm as he placed a bottle in the microwave to warm it. When it was ready, he sat in the big glider rocker and held his daughter close as he fed her. "Miracle, miracle" Mulder thought to himself as he watched his baby girl drink. He was just as thrilled as Scully had been at the prospect of becoming parents together. He knew just how much Scully was still haunted by Emily's death 6 years before, and he could only hope that this new baby would ease some of that pain. Paige had certainly filled some of the emptiness that Samantha had left in his heart, and to watch Dana with their daughter, it was obvious that Paige had helped heal her as well. Mulder leaned down to kiss her on the forehead, and said softly. "Baby doll, I'm going to tell you a little story" Paige gazed at him with her huge blue eyes as she finished her bottle. He held her to his shoulder to rub her back, then returned her to his cradled arms. Slowly, they began to rock, and in a mellow voice, Mulder started to speak. "Paige, even though I know you're too young to understand what I'm telling you, I want to tell you this anyway. You are the light of my life sweetheart. Next to your mommie, of course," he said with a grin. "I think I was the luckiest person in the world when your mom walked in to my life. Strangely enough, you were born 10 years later, to the day, that I met her. I was at a very strange time in my life. I'd been allowed to work on a type of cases called X-Files at the Bureau, and your mom was assigned to work with me. Even though I knew she was assigned to work with me to debunk what I was doing, she acted like my partner from the start. By the time we finished our first case, I knew she was on my side. And I also knew this. Dana Katherine Scully was the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. You look just like her, so I know you're going to be beautiful too. Heh, you already are beautiful."

He placed another kiss on her forehead, and Paige cooed and waved her arms in response. Mulder smoothed her strawberry hair and continued rocking. "Time and time again your mom was there for me. She didn't always agree with my off the wall theories, but she didn't judge me because of them. She helped me to see that not everything is paranormal because it can't be explained. Her science and rationalism saved me a hundred times over. She helped to keep my feet on the ground. I have never seen her loyalty waver, or her dignity compromised. Even through her battle with cancer, she continued to support my cause. She understood my need to find Samantha, and over time, my quest for the Truth became hers as well. Your mom has given up so much because of our quest, and at one time we even believed that she'd been forced to give up the chance to have you because of our journey. And yet, she never lost sight of what she was fighting for. She is the strongest and bravest person I have ever known. Your mom made me the person I am today. Without her, I don't think I would be here.

But I know that losing your big sister Emily, who you are named for, was the worst thing that we ever could have gone through. Even though we only knew her for a few weeks, Emily's death broke your mom's heart, and mine along with it.I had loved your mom so much, for so long, that to see her like that was almost more than I could take. Emily meant so much to your mom, and at the time I prayed that someday God would correct this mistake, and give her something back for all the things that had been taken away.

We continued our work at the FBI for 2 years after that, and I proposed on March 23rd, 2000 and we were married on Christmas Eve that year. And then when we found out we were going to have you, I knew my prayer had been answered. Your mom's eyes shone with a light I hadn't seen in years. My own heart felt so much lighter, and I know your mom's did too. You put a light back into your her life that had been missing for so long. She always told me that my love helped to heal her heart, but you did what even I couldn't do. I will remember the day you were born for the rest of my life. I was there with your mom the whole time, and it was hard for her.It hurt me because she was hurting, but she told me later that she would do it all again in a heartbeat. And after all those long hours, there you were. Your mum was exhausted, but she stretched out her arms immediately and said "I want to see her" The joy on her face when the doctor handed you to her is something I will never forget. I know it was mirrored on my own face.

You've filled our lives with so much love and happiness Paige. We want you to grow up strong and happy and healthy. And I hope that by the time you're all grown up, you've taken after your mother more than you've taken after me" Mulder said with a sheepish grin on his face. "Your mother is a beautiful person, inside and out, and she can show you so much if you let her. I want you to be your own person, of course. I just want you to be blessed with the love and wisdom and strength that your mom possesses too. And I know you will. I know my Scully women. We will treasure you always, dear one." Mulder had been gazing at his little girl while he talked, and he saw now that she was almost asleep. Slowly, he lifted her to his shoulder and rose from the chair. He turned to go back upstairs and was startled to see Scully standing in the doorway. "Hi" she said shyly. Mulder could see a tear glinting in the corner of her eye. "Hi" he replied, a smile on his face. "How long have you been standing here?"

"Since you put the bottle down. I heard you talking, and I came down to see why. And when I saw you sitting here, talking with her like that, my heart just melted..," Scully trailed off, wiping the tear from her eye.

"Mulder.....what you said...about me....about us...." She stopped short again. He looked her in the eye, placing a hand on her shoulder "I meant every word." Scully smiled a watery smile and said "I love you more than I have ever loved anyone in my life, Fox Mulder. And yes, you are right. I have lost many things because of our work. But you lost a lot of things too. There has is so much that has been taken from us both because of what we've learned. And yet, I still wouldn't change a day. Because even though we've lost, without these hardships, I wouldn't have you. And we wouldn't have Paige. I wouldn't change anything about what we've been through if it meant that I wouldn't have my life now. I love my life, and I love you. I wouldn't want things any other way. Don't ever doubt that." Mulder held Paige to his shoulder with one arm, and pulled his wife close with the other. She wrapped her arms around him and their daughter, and reached up to kiss them both. Mulder kissed Scully's forehead and whispered

"Neither would I Dana, Neither would I. I love you too."
